What's the longest time you've spent isolated from contact with another person? How did it feel? Did you start missing social interaction?

Complete isolation for me would be a bit over 3 months in the Carpathian Mountains, beautiful place. Forgot to speak a bit when I went back, words where a bit harder to pronounce and sometimes I would have to take a 1 sec brake or so to remember how to pronounce more unusual words. I got back to normal fast do, less then a week. I am a talker, if the Hound would be around me he would die from a ruptured stomach(if we also had chicken to spare of course).

There’s a huge difference between being isolated in a prison cell where you can’t leave and have very little - if anything - to do, and willingly isolating yourself outdoors in a cave or something. I’m sure both have their bad effects but prison is much much worse.

I'm a criminal justice major, and extended periods of solitary confinement are definitely something we should do away with. If someone is too dangerous to be in the general prison population, they should be kept separated from the rest of the inmates physically, but they need some type of human interaction to keep them from going insane.
@chrisbotos
@chrisbotos 6 жыл бұрын
This type of punishment is not just cruel but possibly the worst a human can experience.Even if someone is tortured they would either die or their body would grow used to it.

But isolation in prison is completely different from spiritual isolation. Not only is spiritual isolation a choice, it is also less...well, isolated. If your in a Forest, there is still visual stimulation. You are not only starting Into darkness, or into a white wall. There are trees, and you are surrounded by nature. Being isolated in prison is honestly worse then just serving regular time. I get that sometimes, it seems like the criminal deserves it, but I isolation will make them more mentally unstable.
@sergioaparicio836
@sergioaparicio836 6 жыл бұрын
Thats exactly what I thought. The main problem is not the lack of human contact, but the lack of stimuli, as in the case of the prisoner.
@sergioaparicio836

And yes, prisons are not a place to reinsert people, but a hell of torture, both psychological and mental, which in my opinion is cruel.
@Jac0bIAm
@Jac0bIAm 6 жыл бұрын
Not only does the spiritual seeker desire the isolation, but he is often well prepared for it mentally and physically after countless hours of meditation and introspection in a non-isolated environment. Throwing a criminal with already severe psychological problems into solitary and total isolation is totally different than throwing a monk, seasoned meditator, or anyone with a quiet mind and deep inner peace into such isolation.

what about solo sailors who are isolated for days on time travelling the world on their yachts. How come they dont go insane? Making matters worse they can experience anxiety and stress because of rough seas and storms.Thats ten times as worse than staying in the dark for 48 hrs. I don't know if it was the same guy, but I read about a guy who did about the long. He was involved with the Black Panthers and got like ten years in prison for shoplifting. While in there he was accused of attacking guards multiple times and also other prisoners during riots (when it is hard to know who did what.) He did that huge amount of time in solitary confinement, then was let out into the general population. But they knew that there were guards, white supremacists, and other black guys that hated him, so within a year he got killed. Anyway, that is one example. But sometimes it is total BS. One guy did a long time in solitary and then that time was extended because he had a book by a political activist who escaped from prison. But that book had been authorized for him to have. Anyway, you can only put somebody in solitary for stuff they did while already in prison. You can't be sentenced to it for what you did outside.

Thomas Silverstein is an interesting case, too. He is still in prison to this day, but spent 20 plus years in solitary confinement in a way I have never heard duplicated. While under a strict no human contact order, not even seeing or speaking to guards, he lived with the florescent lights always on and had televangelist shows played 24/7. Also, he was given literally nothing to help pass the time, either, no reading or drawing materials, playing cards or anything extra. I am not passing judgment either way about his case, just that I think it is apropos to the video.

I partially agree with you, however, you still need to be physically prepared as well. Your body is not made to sit in isolation for long periods of time. Your muscles become weaker, the heart has to work harder, and overall your body is exhausted trying to stay alert. It just wears you down. Personally, I would not survive very long in isolation and need sensory stimulation.

Now the question really is, do you have a pc? Do you have a TV? Do you game games to play? Do you have a kitchen to make food at? Do you have a pet? Do you have the ability to walk to another room? Do you have the ability to tell time? Do you have the possibility to walk outside if you wanted to? If any of the answers are "yes", then it wasn't isolation on the same level as described in the video. End of story. Being alone at home isn't like being closed off from other people. The thing is, being "isolated" as in the video, isn't about being alone, it's about having "social" limitations. You have the ability to just open the pc and send a text to your buddy, and bam, you're now social. The brain is stimulated by social interactions, whether or not that is through the pc, the tv or at a café.

I think I could tank it... IF... I was allowed to write a book or something. The trick is keeping your mind occupied with something that isn't right there right now. You can deprive yourself of sensory input if you can reflect inward and create fictional sensory input to substitute it. The real problem would probably come later on when I start getting paranoid that I'm actually not alone and there is actually someone else trapped in here with me but I don't know where they are. Depriving yourself of petty fears will cause the mind to invent them where none exist, and there is little you can do about that.

It's not your personality that gets u, it's your brain. Your brain is the social creature, not u. Your brain will go nuts without sensory perception. Period. Once I spent two weeks working third shift at a 24-hour pharmacy. They had moved me from the regular shift so that I could help catch up on our work. Although customers stressed me out to the max during the day, going two weeks without interacting with a lot of people made me crave it. I’m typically a pretty introverted individual, so I remember being really surprised that I felt that way.

The thought "What if I didn't exist?" is a very human one. It doesn't mean you don't see value in life. It is just apart of the human condition to wonder if we had never existed. Also the internet is a great place for people who are depressed to find comfort by occupying their mind. Most people Ive heard say "I never would kill myself it's fucking stupid who would want to die." Also have a comfortable life, were raised by two parents who loved them, or are raging alcoholics/sex addicts/pot heads. Nothing wrong with substance use but it is escapism. Go live poor in a slum in India with a guy made out of your shit and I bet we would be watching you swing from a noose in 6 months.

In Buddhism most temples offer a 2 week meditation program that involves almost 12 hours of meditation, absolutely no talking and you having to close your eyes half of the time you're awake. Such an amazing experience and the other hundred that were in my batch (mostly westerners, although the retreat was held in taiwan) all felt like it was a very uplifting and enlightening experience. ☺ Prior to that I had been living in a Buddhist temple for 4 months so it was pretty easy for me.

jjburkk No one truly want to be alone. Youre just ashamed of what you are and afraid that people will judge you because of it. Don't worry because there's a lot of support out there if you let your voice out

I spent 3 weeks isolated from friends family when i was going through grief. It helped alot. I didn't cry either. I just watch tv, smoked weed and played the game

I’d enjoy the solitude I do and feel my best when I’m alone and in complete darkness or silence. I always get irritated with light or unnecessary sound. Sometimes I wish I could unplugged the refrigerator to get rid of the humming

I have lived 14 years in near complete isolation due to an illness that is called avoidant personality disorder. I have not had 1 friend, girlfriend or even someone to talk to over all these years with a few exceptions, I have at times attended therapy but to no avail , the personality disorder is to integrated in my pathology. Anyone; I'm still far from crazy or deranged. I still have solid cognitive capacity and a pragmatic and logical worldview. I'm still able to reflect and reason, I have never experienced a psychotic episode and I'm rarely depressed. I might be sexually frustrated by that isnt enough to qualify as "crazy".

I would not recommend avoidant personality disorder for anybody. It usually lead to a very socially isolated life with little prospect of finding friendship or love.

And yet by being compelled to share I would position that you also need social interaction in your own way

Of course, humans is social animals. I get some socialization online. But still, online interaction is not the same as a friendship where you can actually meet them and have a laugh together or do fun stuff like travelling, going to the beach, playing sports and whatnot. That's things I sorely miss but I dont miss it so much that it drives me crazy. But I suppose we humans have different tolerance levels, some might snap and develop severe mental disorders in just a year of living like me.

aedivian I'm confused. What is exactly happening in your mind that keeps you from doing anything social? Can you elaborate? I'm genuinely curious.

Not everyone is social. You can be “isolated” for years without going go crazy. For instance you could live in the mountains and be fine. It depends if you can actually do things. And not everyone craves social ness either,

pecu alex yeah. Anyone can adjust to that, but complete lack of senses isn’t natural, which is why people go “crazy”.

Everyone is social. You're incorrect. Solitary confinement provides no true social interaction or anything similar whatsoever. Living alone in the mountains you here weather and hear and see other living creatures daily no matter what. Your mind is stimulated by social interactions around you constantly
@redacted3557
@redacted3557 6 жыл бұрын
YaBoiOof not really. Yes everyone is “made” to be social but you can simply override this by not speaking. It isn’t hard to grasp this idea. And when I refer to everyone not being social I’m not talking about total isolation. There’s a difference between antisocialness and complete isolation.
