They used to get funding for Athletics (track and field) in the 90s and were competitive - especially in the middle distance and relays. Sadly this is true of many African nations.

Easier said than done! You weren't on that pitch. You think the defender wanted to concede any goal, if not for the trickier and tactical Nigerians offensive play??? Common now! Every player winning a national Jersey to represent, want success for their country. I'm saying in a competition there has to be a winner or loser, and often a draw. Appraise both teams for reaching that stage of the tournament rather than negative criticism. When the Australians were winning easily years ago, you won't say that, until they lose, forgetting that every team had to level up and upgrade their standard. No more minors in international football especially at the world cup level. Nigeria have been very consistent globally, but one sided media have shy away until being unleashed the truth with a shocking 😮 outcome. All the best, with your mainstream media one sided report about Africa.
