I have always thought that this was one of the most amazing uses of a music video to actually enhance the meaning of a song - most music videos over the years have just been promotional vehicles for a song or a band. This was art.

@@j.h.3777 I understand that. The lyrics say it and for those who do have friends, friends can be helpful in dealing with life and emotions. Denying or ignoring the fact that one is fortunate enough to have friends that you could lean on is a slap in the face of those who don’t have friends and could really use one. I also think that sometimes we have more friends than we think we do, which I think is part of what the song is trying to point out. Our humanity and empathy are our inalienable common ground when we let it be , even when we seemingly have little in common. The fact we look different, drive different cars, live in different places, listen to different music are immaterial if we realize and understand that our commonality of human(if not social) experience is greater than those differences and our problems are not nearly as unique we let ourselves believe. Again, this is the message of the imagery and lyrics in the video. Depression can create the mythological impression that the rest of the world is happy and carefree and we and we alone are lonely, that we and we alone have unique problems that others don’t have and that no one could possibly understand or help us to endure and survive….Depression has us believing we alone have problems, suffer loneliness and keeps us from realizing, understanding and acknowledging that nearly every person who has ever walked the planet has felt, to some degree, exactly what we are feeling when we feel so uniquely alone…and Depression causes us to defend that aloneness, that uniqueness of our pain and to barricade ourselves behind the perceived differences and indifference of others…There are certainly those who never feel, think or experience/live any of this. I am not one of them.

For me it was quite the opposite. This song was sort of the end of my love affair with the band. I thought I've had enough (no pun) of them by the time of "Shiny Happy People", but then Automatic for the People came out. It surprised me how good they still were, but it seemed like their Abbey Road. It was. I fell in love back in '83. "Talk About the Passion" and "Radio Free Europe" got me. Then "So. Central Rain" slayed me. Guitars, bass and drums in a sea of synthesizers. Imagine that.

Michael Stipe, REM's lead singer, wrote this in response to several friends who were suicidal, and for people who were ready to give up on life. "When you're sure you've had too much of this life - hang on." He urges the listener, "Don't throw your hand" - an expression in cards for giving up. Sometimes life deals you some situations that seem too hard to bear. Such a beautiful, moving song of hope.

Sometimes truths are so universal their revelation stuns you: Everybody hurts, so hold on. Watched this dozens of times, inexplicably I tear up every time he gets to “Hold on.” It wouldn’t be the same song without that uplift at the end. If I wrote this, I’d feel like I did something mighty special.

Amazing reaction. Amazing song. Amazing video. Fun fact: This was filmed in San Antonio. Y’all nailed the breakdown. One of the things I tell myself everyday is that life is ups and downs. At your worst moment, it will get better. You will have good days again. At the same time, when everything is going good, remember that you will have bad days again, too. The good days after that. Hold onto those moments when life is good, and when life is bad, let those moments pass. They will. I’ve been to the very bottom and things got better when I never thought they would. When I felt I had it all, I still had bad days ahead. Knowing that, it helps you live in the moment. The only thing you really have control of. I hope everyone is having a good moment right now.

I struggle with depression, anxiety, chronic migraines, etc, and I've had a lot of those thoughts in my lowest points. To see other people thinking them too, represented in a video. OMG. It's powerful and too true. I've heard this song a ton, but never knew the story behind it. Thank you for giving me this moment, my therapist thanks you (after I tell her about this!) I think the message of this song to me is that often when we feel sad or depressed we feel like we're the only ones who feel that way, that everyone else around us is happy or content and no one can understand what we're going through. but everyone has felt that way, even if it was just briefly, we're not alone, and you just never know what the strangers around you are going through so be kind as well. The video is great for this song, glad you watched it along with listening to the song!

For pretty much anybody who has ever looked into that abyss, this song holds a great deal of importance. For me, it provides some catharsis at times it's needed. I can also say that, when the darkness has a real good hold on you, you won't see yourself as worth saving. I say that from experience, I'm only here because somebody saw something I posted on FB, red flags went up, and she called the police. They had to use my phone's GPS to find me while she kept me talking on the phone. Check on your friends, even the strong ones, and the happy ones. Sometimes, their mask hides pain you can't imagine.

You had mentioned everybody seeming happy with their life/job/relationship. Most of us with major depression; or any mental illness; have perfected the "mask" or "facade" that we show everybody. We don't want to bring others down or draw attention to ourselves. Personally, I'm at the point of not wanting anybody physically or emotionally in my life at all. This is one of the best songs out there to try and get the point across. There are a couple by Suicidal Tendencies as well. "Nobody Hears" and "Alone."

I hope you are getting help - counselling or whatever. I am you - I've been you for decades. Don't be me - get help, now. Having had the vague diagnosis for years of "depression", I was recently told I have been suffering Complex PTSD for ever really, due to childhood experiences. I wish I knew this a very long time ago, maybe things would be different now. Don't be me. Middle aged, alone and no real idea how to change that. The more you spend time alone, the more you get used to that isolation and it's not a healthy state for a human to be in. I really hope you have help available and you make use of it. Good luck.

So many bands like REM and Evanescence and Counting Crows just off the top of my head had to dismantle due to one of the band members usually the lead singer suffering from severe depression !

Michael Stipe is amazing. The song live at the Glastonbury festival is so haunting. Please check out The living years by Mike and the mechanics if you haven’t already. Beautiful song with a beautiful message.

You should try Peter Gabriel's "Don't give up". It's similar to this, and also excellent.

I’ve never heard this song and not cried since the day i first saw it on MTV back in the day. It’s also my go to song for when things are particularly rough and I am going through it. R.E.M is 🔥🔥

The individuals in their cars is symbolic of our isolation from each other and the diminishment of our "society" together...and the inability to have empathy for even those who share the same pains, worries and frustrations, leading us to believe we are unique and alone in our troubles....
