Last fall my wife and I decided to go raised beds and after comparing companies and prices, we went with cinderblocks. At that time blocks were 97cent and we were able to build a 4x16 bed, 3ft tall for the price of a 4x8 metal bed. Not going to lie, it wasn't easy getting the first row straight and level but after that it went quick and easy. We filled the blocks with sand/dirt to keep them from moving and I think it helped with insulation. The one side we didn't fill with sand seemed to dry out faster. This spring we planned to build 2 more but after realizing I could take one row of block off our original one and make 3 beds instead of 2, my wife was all for it. Really enjoying growing in them so far. Was the first time I was able to grow corn without racoons getting it all. The block wall was a good deterant along with a single hot wire connected to a solar electric fence :)

Hint for all those who have to do the build on uneven ground (This comes from the directions for Birdie's beds): Just finger tighten the screws during the build, then come back once it's done and cinch them down. Light hand tightening allows the joins to shift just a bit, which makes it easier to line up the next join.

You are my favorite Florida KZfaq channel. I live a couple hours south of you, so can really relate to the growing conditions. That first raised bed brand looked nice, and I'm glad to hear your honest opinion on it. Vegega (I see the humor in the name😆🤣) seems very promising, and I look also forward to what you think of that brand.

a sugg for FL gardners: you may want to use a good car or boat wax on the outside of those painted beds. that will keep the salt/UV damage to a min. Nufinish would be very tough coating. galvinized should be fine untouched

Just purchased some galvanized raised beds from Northern Tool. Purchased online and picked up - two 4x4 and four 6x3 - on sale. Think they are currently on sale as I write this. I’ve put the 4x4 together and other than some sharp edges on the corner brackets, quite impressed with the stability. Now, to fill them! We are in Ocala, and on 5 acres with trees, so lots of organic matter. Any suggestions on most economical ways to fill? Also, would you recommend placing these beds in full sun, east side with half day sun ( might get a bit more during cooler months due to few leaves on trees), or something in between? I’ve been watching sun patterns but know this will change this winter. This is my biggest dilemma currently along with filling. Enjoy your channel, thanks for sharing your experiences. BTW, my husband used to be in the food business and has, for the most part, done all the grocery shopping and cooking. Retired now, but not much has changed.

Hadn't heard of that brand. I'll check them out! I have another video on filling raised beds. Logs for the base, mulch in the middle and then compost and soil for the last 6 to 9 inches. I wouldn't place the beds in full sun. Florida veggies like 4 to 6 hours (especially in the summer). Sun from the east in the morning, I find to work the best. And yes leverage those trees that have canopies in the summer and get stick like in the winter. I feel that is a winning combo for us Floridians. That's cool that your hubby is the food man... Ben is too. Even though I'm the one whose job was to make food... 😂. But in a different way. I'm a factory girl. Which is why I pay attention to metal edges and such. I've had teammates lose fingers and get bad injuries from metal that isn't ground down properly. And proper sealing of metal machines is key in food factories... otherwise rust city.
@victoriahattemar1019

Yes logs in the bottom(hugelkultur) then fill around them with wood chips which usually can be found for free then 6-9 inches of composted soil.

The side support situation is a problem. I ordered a 6.5x2x32 bed. I wanted to configure it to 42 inch wide instead and only 2 ft cross bars were included. They have photos of the 42 inch config with the 6.5x2 ordering info. They charged over $30 for 2 18 inch extention rods which is absolutely outrageous. They chintzed out in such a bad way and I am stuck not being able to plant for who knows how long.

The size I bought didn't have the cross bars either. The taller ones do. You can buy them as an add on. I'll be evaluating bowing without them to see if the thickness of material can withstand the outward force of the soil.

See thanks for watching it multiple times. Yes, I recommend the VegeGa beds. I’m going to do an update video soon but here are the main things I’ve seen. No rust. I’ve inspected all common points each month for rust and there is zero rust. Rust is one of the reasons that metal beds can fail early. Two, the top liner has stayed on amazingly well. Three no warping or bowing. Those are my main thoughts. So if you are thinking of getting them, I would. Cheers! Hope that helps
