Cool tip! and verry useful in case one needs it, batteries can only last so long. I would only add that sticking the top part of the torch in the mushroom solution would be enough to eventually saturate the entire fabric via capillary action while saving the liquid that spilled on the ground.

He cut it finely, put into the pot aaand... It melts into waxy/oily substance? Does this kind of funguses contain sap? Did the oil come out of the mushroom? I’d go with sap and tallow for a stick torch. I thought he was drying out the mushroom so it could be used as tinder or a spark catcher. What was the use of the mushroom and what is it called? Man, stuff like this is fascinating. I’m a cripple so when the world ends, I’m fucked but it’s still cool to learn. If anyone wants me on their ‘end of the world’ team, I can sharpen knives/chisels to whatever you need and can knapp flint/chert plus make stuff out of wood.

@seanc.5788 Ай бұрын
Huh? So is that what something like this demonstration indicates? ok if so isn't it better to have some firelight while staying put in the dark. Might even better your chances at being found.
@seanc.5788 If you're in the wilderness, your fire won't be seen from above at night due to thick trees and brush. But the SMOKE can be seen during the DAY from any aircraft that's looking for you. You build a fire to keep warm, not move around
@seanc.5788 Being in the wilderness, your firelight won't be visible by any aircraft due to thick trees and brush. But during the day your smoke will be visible to rescuers and they will investigate it. You only need light at night to keep warm, not wandering around. Doing that will increase your chances of a snake bite or a bear attack. Staying put you can use the fire for protection to vend off such creatures

Okay amateur botanist here. I'm gonna assume whatever species of floor mushroom that is is stuck to a coniferous tree containing Acetic Acid or something flammable. I hope I'm wrong and it's the mushroom. Just a wild guess I am no expert. I just love nature.
@jodylinnartz4461 Ай бұрын
Acetic acid isint flammable. It’s literally vinegar

This specific species is a horse hoof shroom and they do contain a waxy resin that acts more like vaseline on a cotton ball rather than an accelerant. Hope that helps 😁
@wioi Ай бұрын
You're actually wrong!!! It's literally the mushroom that is flammable.

Amadou is a spongy material derived from Fomes fomentarius and similar fungi that grow on the bark of coniferous and angiosperm trees, and have the appearance of a horse's hoof (thus the name "hoof fungus"). It is also known as the "tinder fungus" and is useful for starting slow-burning fires.

The first portable fire source was actually a flammable mushroom (i believe birch polypore), and allowed for much of humans’ expansion northward.
