Austrian Audio OD505: austrian.audio/od505/
THis is a high quality, phantom-powered dynamic handheld microphone that could be friendly to voices with a sharp "ess sound". The claims for the non existing handling noise didn't bear out in my testing, but the mic sound great with nice bass and a present but warm top end.

Second-order means 12 db per octave. That mic sounds great as a stationary mic. Great review Mike, thanks! This reminds me of my KSM 32. It does need a shock mount if used on a boom, and forget about using it on stage. However, if you are doing a podcast and like the proximity effect. I think the hyper-cardoid pattern would allow it to work well in a less than perfectly treated room.

Hi Mike, a nice review again; thank you. The internal circuitry (i.e. a low noise amplifier) adds some gain just like a mic activator would do -- in other words, it increases the sensitivity of the mic which tells us how much Volts are outputted at a sound pressure of 1 Pa. As to the handling noise, I do agree with that comment which suggests that this particular mic specimen must be defective with such a horrible handling noise when it is advertised as being good at handling noise rejection due to its innovative polarity flipped second capsule.

I had a mic for high ambient noise about 30 years ago. It had two dynamic elements with the polarity flipped on one. It didn’t matter which element you talked Into as long as you directed your voice into one of them. It actually did a decent job at reducing background noice.

Thanks for your extensive test. This mic has a nice sound to it, but the handling noise rejection is not up to what you'd expect from what is essentially a handheld mic. The Shure Beta 87A sounds nice too and does really do a much better job in relation to rejecting handling noise.

I liked the way you put the word "subscribe" on the side of the mic in the first view. Almost subliminal! I can't answer for the "gap," but I can answer about a "second order" filter. A second-order filter is one that uses two elements, usually a capacitor and an inductor (unless it's an active filter, which likely uses two capacitors), and it changes the frequency response at a rate of 12 dB per octave. The pointed pop filter is not new. Look inside certain 1960's EV mics and you'll find something very similar.

i think the details are great. the lower frequencies are great as well, but the proximity effect is a bit too much for me, but that is easy to filter out. but what i really like is, that the esses are not too sharp. that means, that it is not fatiguing listen to it for longer while having good clarity in the mid section. i think it is a good mic and has a great value for the money.

They do mean rotated 180 degrees. This technique was made famous by HEIL audio with their PR (polarity reversed) line which includes the dearly loved PR40 broadcast mic and the PR22 vocal mic since it also helps with general background rejection.

Active dynamics are starting to make their presence known. One wonders where it will end up. 25% of dynamics on the market? Whilst cloudlifters and the like exist you have the variety to boost passive dynamics. This is certainly more cost effective. But somewhere in the mix will be a happy medium. A great review. Thanks Mike.

I took a Beta 58A and the AA 505 to the rehearsal room couple of weeks ago. I wanted to have a better clear-sounding mic for the rehearsal room ( I use a Beta 87A wireless for live shows) and the minute I sung on the AA I loved it. I hear all so clear and loud. My feeling was like the mic has a buil-in compressor on it. I could hear all my register cristar clear, loud and precise. Specially the low range I felt I had no need to push my vocal folds because it was all very present. For my surprise, the band didn't like it. All of them said "NO", take the Beta 58A. THey said (and that might be interesting for possible buyers looking for feedback about this product), that it sounded too "rough", too not-nice and harsh. That allthough yes, it was louder as hell with not a single feedback problem in the room and they all could hear me loud and clear even when the band was playing louder than usual for testing the mics, eventhough they all agreed taht it was a good thing, theyy all said, the BEta 58A was warmer, "rounded", "balanced" and nicer. I still wanted to get the AA 505 (and might get it for other acoustic band project I have) but for my electric band, they said, they were not sure the crowd would take it for a long period of time, the harshness and the very strong "pps" and "ssss" sound which was not present in the Beta 58A. And of course, there was the final point. the handling noise... way too much. In the electric band I sing jumping everywhere on stage. In the Acoustic band, I play guitar and I'm fixed in front of the mic. So that might maybe be a field for it.

@@zikamusic2364 Hi. I recently got myself a Rode Nt1a. So far pretty happy with it. In the instructions it says, that when not used, it should be put into a cover to prevent dust from getting in and to keep it somewhat dry. Is it really that important to cover up a mic when you're not using it?
@lassi6547
@lassi6547 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Dust will slowly collect on the elements and change the sound over time. It's a bit annoying at first, but you get used to it. It's a useful habit to build early on as later you will most likely invest in more expensive microphones and at that point you want to really take care of them.

Almost never used in any situation, live or whatever else, the problem is that it's not particularly outstanding about anything and also lacks of a special personality. I haven't sold it yet only because probably in the future it will be regarded as a "pet shop curio" for its unique visual design and will become valuable (also because very few people bought it).

Some of the worst handling noise I've ever heard. The reversed Phase capsule is just to create the Super Cardioid pattern. It's also why there are vents on any Cardioid or Super Cardioid mic, sound hitting the back of a single capsule is affectively the same as hitting a second capsule. It's how a lot of Large diaphragm condensers work too, a second diaphragm in the back that when mixed with the front create multiple polar patterns. Interesting mic. Passive Dynamic seems to be becoming a thing. It's been popping up in Ribbons for a few years and now in some broadcast types. saves you buying a Cloud lifter I guess.
