Bloomberg's Hello World host Ashlee Vance recently traveled to Osaka University to see Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro’s latest creation, an android named Erica that's designed to work, one day, as a receptionist or personal assistant. The android has lifelike skin and facial gestures and uses artificial intelligence software to listen to and respond to requests. Is Erica creepy? To Vance she is, but not to Professor Ishiguro, who considers her nearly indistinguishable from a human.

I have also been in quite a few situations where I was in a country where I didn't speak the language and was alone, a great experience I highly recommend all should do. He said he's seen many of these robots so being able to compare the skin material they use to determine what is most suitable is important. Automatically assuming he was stroking the robot in a creepy way is just stupid. This is a technology with many different attributes. Use your head.

I didn't feel this robot was creepy at all probably because I saw her as mannequin-like. Professor Ishiuro has created I think an amazing piece of technology unlike ever before, a very notable achievement in human history. I think if a robot that looked very real knocked on my door and at first I thought it was human, then as a conversation progressed I realized it was a robot I would probably have a strange feeling, but maybe more because I didn't know who was operating it and not trusting if it was designed with super physical strength and speed to destroy and rob someone etc. I suppose they'll have robots that can run 60 miles per hour, maybe jump 300 feet, pick up an auto mobile etc.

I feel the uncanny valley with a lot of these robots are the mouths. They don't put enough sensors around the jaw to organically formulate words. Instead its basically a glorified hand puppet. Open or close. If I say the word "frank", my mouth and tongue do a lot of intricate articulation compared to if I say "Philosopher". A lot of these AI robots though just have a "Open-close" binary system which makes them very creepy.

Just to go a bit creepier, today I read that Nissan is developing a system for cars,to read and react to your thoughts, and take care of things faster than you are able,ad that to a robot like this one, with advanced AI etc, could be interesting with huge potential for abuse, lets see, your android lover reads your thoughts, feeds it to your home web based servant( Alexis etc) silently, who reports it to the owners of the home system,as that system does right now, monitoring your every word, and feeding it to google, who sells any useful info gleaned, and step it up to reading what you think ,taken far enough you best be careful of what you think ,and where,...Knock knock...,who's there,...the PC thought police, come with us please ! It was several years ago when I first read about the thought sensing tech. then beginning development, now being looked seriously for use in vehicles, big brother would never abuse that kind of tech now would they ? NEVER ! (before you laugh and sneer, look into what is publicly known on the subject.)

No. 'dou desu ka' does not mean 'how was it', it means 'how is it', or even possibly 'how are you'. She was talking about something she did that morning and then he came up with a question that doesn't relate. A human would probably say 'don't you mean: How was it??'. Then he became a b-hole and started mocking her. I would say that her decision to end the conversation was justified and intelligent.

Of course corporations wouldn't have to pay these things, no time off, no benefits, no retirement - perfect - working them morning, noon, and night. They don't go home and no eating lunch. If they want to make these look good they have to stop making a whole face and focus on parts. Get a team to make eyes that look realistic. "Erika" doesn't even have eyelids. It has holes in a single sheet of latex, and the motors don't move correctly. You need people to perfect how each part works before you start making a whole face otherwise they're always going to look the same. I'll tell you how to do it even, record videos of peoples eye's natural movement to generate an algoryth for how frequently they move while at rest and what angle they move to. Same deal for when you're talking to them, when they're talking to you, when you're watching a video, etc. Then you make motors that actually mimic the muscles which control the eye. And same deal for the eye lid. Even if all the motors and pullies are too big to fit inside a head, don't worry about that at first just get the movement right. First you have to get function down, and with time, technology will provide the capability for you to alter the form. Same goes with the mouth. This flapping lip thing that doesn't even close right when it's resting is just a waste. Invent a robot tongue and lips that can make human language sounds analogue like a musical instrument. Don't just time lip flaps to digital recordings like a cartoon. Those are the major issues with this thing. Same goes for the other muscles in the face and the head movements themselves. Make a robot that does nothing but turns it's head the way a person does when they're just standing there doing nothing before you try to impliment everything all at once.

There are still a lot of things to work on. When I compare a robot with a human appearance (like this woman) with a real human, I think robots are still very stiff, which makes it very easy to tell which one is a robot and which one is a real woman. In this respect artificial intelligence (I still don't believe in real artificial intelligence like you see in SF movies) is more advanced than robot movements are.

there are only 43 muscles in the human face, i guess you could record video of faces reacting to different stimuli for different emotions, and sort of mimic that. many people having split second emotional reactions, widening of the eyes, lips, etc. that register on their faces even when the emotion is so fleeting that the person experiencing it may not be conscious of it. Some experts use it to determine if people are lying in murder investigations, etc. I don't think it is a pusedoscience but it is far from universally perfect and completely understood... still i wish more people in law enforcement had training in reading people's body language to know when to use force for example in the field, etc. interesting post though, good ideas, sadly many things will be sacrificed because of time, space, weight, money, etc., etc., etc.,

Creepy. Why is there even a need to invent robots when currently there are 7,500,000,000 people on Earth, most of whom need or will need a job? It would be cheaper to fly me to Japan where I could be your receptionist and I'll even make coffee. 🤷‍♂️

The answer to your last question: No. The reason is scientific advancement. Innovation is what allows for expansion as a race. New technology improves every aspect of our lives. It's hard to tell where this will lead, but we should be optimistic. The Robotics field is already saving peoples' lives.

I look at this as an artistic creation in the first place. There is more needed to convince me that it is a true autonomous human-like being. About the flawless way she seems to understand questions: how come that automated processing of natural language semantics generally is still very primitive and full of failures? Can you make a demo where she shows inituïtion, full understanding of complex situations perceived by her sensors (for instance traffic, people that are lying), invention of completely new idea's, advanced learning, and so on?

I love the view of the programmers when Erica makes a mistake or otherwise blunders. It's hilarious, because they know. On the other hand, I really need an Erica in my solitary life. We could play chess, table tennis .. have an interesting conversation and perhaps more. Of course, will androids take away your jobs? If you possess any essence of creativity, then the answer would be no.But, then again, who knows for sure?

This robot has potential, maybe in 10-14 years it can do house chores and help people in hospitals with special medical AI and minor medical condition knowledge. it's a shame to keep her only as a receptionist, also it's it's very possible to improve the facial movements to get very close to those of humans, the idea is the use (under the external skin) a fat-like substitute that will envelop the entire skull, like a mold casting. The excitation will use electric signals like our body, therefore movements are more human-like.

I suspect human dolls robots are gonna be marketed mainly as sex dolls. The internet is mostly porn, so I assume robots will also fill that demand, the human primal instincts. To me that's almost obvious... imagine this girl robot 10x as realistic as a human, that's what will soon happen. The skin will get quite similar to our, the touch and everything. So you have all the sexual attributes of a female-except maybe the emotional complexities that also contribute greatly to pleasure, but they will imitate and emulate that very very well. And you get no risk rejection, no risk of pregnancy, no attachments all human problems eliminated, and a human-like perfect doll. Also, you'll have dolls that not only are taught how to have perfect sex in terms of physicality, but also that will be configurable to what you like. Looking more attractive than any girl in your circle. Don't try tell me that you wouldn't try sleeping with her. Not way! It WILL happen for sure and will be certainly the nº1 demand for human like dolls. But then I think that it's not the nicest way to start a relationship... in 50 years robots will be much smarter and will realize that we are selfish bastards for starting our interaction with them by f*ing them like maniacs.

In the 20th century people thought in 2020 all cars would fly and there wouldn't be third world countries. You see, some people just need to realize this is reality and not a fucking Hollywood movie (I am sorry for my inappropiate language). We have made progress not much but that's literally everything to it. Scientists do not have enough knowledge on how they can make humanoid robots as realistic as humans. I personally think they will have enough knowledge to make it in a minimum of 5 centuries, but will we, humans, then not be extinct?
