This is a good video. Not a 80mph jump case landing on your head, but a fairly slow speed slip that could have ended very badly. This is why the helmet is the most important thing to buy. Second, the boots.

mattdedasc I couldn't agree more. Helmet and boots are non negotiable. I broke my ankle in a high speed crash and I'm convinced my relatively cheap pair of Thor boots saved me from needing surgery.

To be honest any helmet would protect from this haha. But ya your head is the most important thing so spend money on the helmet.

Excellant video, during 40+ years of riding and racing I have totaled 4 helmets. I also retired all of them after the crash. I also was always wearing the best available. Boots and helmets are not a place to go cheap. This vid might save a new ride his life, way to go Kyle.

I started investigating this helmet. The great ventilation and lightweight would be much appreciated. However at the $500 price point it lacks two key things that it’s competitors have: MIPS and being road legal in the US. Now I believe the ECE standard is way better than DOT but the law is the law. Regarding MIPS, you can find a sub $200 Bell MX9 with MIPS and same price point products such as the FOX V3, Fly Carbon MIPS, Troy Lee SE4, etc. etc. all include MIPS. This helmet also does not appear to have emergency cheek pad releases. Now having said all that, Klim announced last week that they have an F5 Koroyd model coming out with advanced impact energy management, MIPS, DOT and ECE. I’m interested in that one except it comes in black colorways which will be hot as hell. I know, I’m a complainer. I think the standard F5 at $500 should have come with MIPS. The F5 Koroyd lists for $695. I’m currently using a 6D ATR1 but always looking for new advances.

I work at a Powersports store and had a guy come in with a Klim Krios (same helmet I use) that was involved in a head on collision. His bike was unrecognizable and his head went through the car's windshield. The Krios definitely saved his life. Klim makes quality products and I have full trust in their safety. I also just picked up a F3 last week. They're amazing helmets. The only thing is I wish the F5 was back in stock so I could pick one up. Still LOVE it though!

Good helmet, but you should replace it with a 6D. First, because it's specifically designed to prevent brain injury. Second, because I'd love to see your review on it. And you are absolutely right about "retiring" a helmet that's done it's job. All the industry experts say they're only designed to work once (if they were designed for repeated blows, we wouldn't be able to handle the weight). Helmets also have a shelf life, 3-5 years. Fortunately I never severely tested any of my old favorites in decades past, before this stuff became common knowledge...

Just ponied up for a Leatt 5.5. 6d and Leatt are really putting a lot engineering into low speed crash protection. After 3 years of serious riding I ponied up for the Sidi Crossfire 2 and the Leatt helmet!

+dirtbikechannel Did you ever get this helmet checked by Klim? I know in the UK with Arai helmets, if you have a crash they offer a free check service where you send off the helmet, they will then decide if it is still useable and 'service' it before returning to you.

I lost control after hitting a hill poorly and wheeling into a tree diagonally. I blame it on arm pump. My right hand slipped on the throttle at the bottom of the whoop. Thats when the front end just flew up. I was wearing the Leatt knee / shin guard you recommended and SG12 boots. I ended up hitting my helmet, left knee, left shoulder and destroyed my headlight and damaged my fork guard where the front brake and speedo cable attaches. It was one of those crashes where you are just bought all the safety equipment a week before you go out and ride then thank God that you purchased them. I am in belief that I would have been dead with out my helmet and my knee would have been shattered had I not worn the gear. The wrap around guards protected my left hand from being crushed into the tree along with saving my clutch levers. All this gear allowed me to jump back up and ride my KTM 350 EXC-F motorcycle home. My left hand, left knee and front of my left shoulder is sore. You can complain all you want about the prices on safety gear but if you crash and imagine what it would have been like without it, you gain an immediate appreciation for getting good quality safety gear and motorcycle protection. Good video!

Something that never gets mentionned, you want a helmet to be deformed, cracked, shattered or whatever after a hit. All the energy going into breaking the helmet is what you want. If a helmet was so rigid that it didn't give in a crash, your head would be taking that energy.

Time to try out a 6D. I had a couple bell ringers riding when I was younger(cheapo lazer helmet). From then on its been arai, shoei and now maybe the best protection you can buy 6D. The only downside I bought the carbon fibre ATR-1 and $850 for a helmet is a bit much.

Not saying anything bad, but the price of the helmet doesn't really make much of a difference in how much it protects your head, they all have to go through some form of controlled testing.. The cost of a helmet really only means it will have better ventilation and more gadgets, or whether you want the shell to be specifically made for the size.. the cost doesn't affect its safety rating..
@MXJEFF94
@MXJEFF94 6 жыл бұрын
You couldn't be more WRONG. There is a difference between a $700 -6D helmet and a $100 helmet. If you think the days of SNELL and DOT certified are enough, you are crazy. MX riders, trail riders need multiple levels of protection from both high and low speed crashes. $10 helmet, $10 head.
@Fireballsocal
@Fireballsocal 6 жыл бұрын
Jeff Brennan, can you show some studies that back this up? Not marketing wank but real studies. My go to is the helmet test that some magazine, (cyclerider maybe?) did awhile ago. Here is MSFs take on the results. www.msf-usa.org/downloads/imsc2006/Thom-Comparison_Tests_of_Motorcycle_Helmets-Paper.pdf Basically pick a dot/snell approved helmet from a reputable manufacturer and you will get a very safe helmet. DOT biases more toward low speed street riding. Snell biases toward racers that are more prone to faster accidents.

I think weight has a big role in neck problems and such, Also many of the newer MX helmets have air bladder systems installed to help remove the helmet in time that their may be a neck injury. So money buys you more than gadgets..
@SuperDRAY88
@SuperDRAY88 6 жыл бұрын
Jeff Brennan I've seen $150 dollar helmets cop absolute beltings, I'm not saying that a $1000 dollar helmet won't offer more protection, in trying to state that a $150 dollar helmet will do the exact same thing, unless in extreme circumstances, where maybe you get a spear straight to the head at 150mph
@Fireballsocal
@Fireballsocal 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good point on weight. I don't think neck injuries are addressed in the tests because a helmet is for impact absorption. Neck devices like race collars and the leatt brace I use address that. Light weight helmets definitely decrease fatigue over long trips but there is more going on there. Wind resistance and conditioning play a big part as well. And the air bladders are available on budget helmets. I had a scorpion street bike helmet that had one. Give me a regular old shoei any day.

crashed on a jump once so hard i lost 2 days worth of memory, i for real had to watch series on netflix agian because i could not remember what i watch the day before. felt like deja vu had seen it but could not remember. and one Collapsed Lung, broke my hand and collor bone, both needed plates to heal properly. only a little scratch on the helmet but u could feel the "foam" inside was become soft. its was a Airoh Aviator 2.2 top of the line helm in term of ventilation etc, i strongly recommend it

Kyle- my bother, Personally I thank the Lord you are ok. Your family loves and NEEDS YOU ALIVE!!! That being said, when I raced ANA D-39 (SanDiego) if I took a real nasty header, Bell used to test at no charge the integrity. Sure would might be worth a ph call to Klim and a a vid clip of this to find out. I managed to secure a Sponsorship deal out of it, I crashed so much!! 😳 I think you’d wise to park that one, cuz’ as I always say....The older I get...the faster I was!!! Praise God your ok, the most important thing to remember. Dean.

Agreed that helmet is mandatory. Don't have to be going fast at all to have a nasty hit to the head, as you demonstrate in your video and I do here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptmJmL2Q0MinoWQ.html I've since replaced my helmet with a 6D for the reasons given by other commenters. You can usually see look at the foam to see if it has been squished, or send the helmet to the manufacturer to be inspected.
