I LOVe your Channel, it’s done wonders for mine and my mums relationship, I know that sounds weird, but let me tell you why… I’m doing the same currently, just bought my first house, it’s a total renovation project ie no heating system, asbestos, overgrown garden, the kitchen consisted of a brick pantry and a Belfast sink bolted to the wall. Now, my mum is the “you need a man to do that” kind and it infuriates me to no end. The arguments we used to have about my projects in the house she would pretty much condemn their success before I even began. So…..I got her into your Chanel! Seeing you rip down part of your house, take out old kitchen cabinets, take down windows to re-do them and all the other adventures in between that you’re not scared to try your hand at, has made her see that her 34 year old, 5’2” daughter can do it as well, just with a longer ladder. And now she even tries to help herself. It’s like watching your videos has re-educated her on the modern woman. Thank You 😊

My parents built their on house when I was a kid. I believe the only thing they contracted out was the mason work and the electrical. It took them several years to finish. My mom at one point became very frustrated because it was taking so long. My dad promised her that we would spend Christmas in the house. We did spend Christmas in the house even though it wasn’t finished. We slept in sleeping bags and put up a small tree. The Christmas we camped in our house is one of my best Christmas memories.

TV shows have fooled us into thinking that building or remodeling will happen on time, on budget, and mostly smoothly. These same shows also make it appear that one or two people do all the designing, ordering, demo, rebuilding and finishing, when in fact, there are teams of people involved in each step of the process, including contractors, subs and experts in every facet of construction who actually adhere to a timeline. Thank you so much, MaCenna, for showing everyone the reality of building and remodeling. You have probably saved people their marriages or partnerships, a lot of money, and frustration. Best of luck as you finish your project. We are all pulling for you!

I don't know what shows you're watching but there's always delays and ups and downs. It's what makes those shows more entertaining. They typically talk about how long and how much more of a cost or over budget. It just doesn't seem long to you because it's done in one episode.

The siding going in has me AMAZED. It’s becoming a home SO quickly right before our eyes. It’s such a beautiful sight to see. I’m so sorry about it not being enough- but I’m so happy you’re remaining optimistic. It’s true it’s okay maybe that extra time for the siding is a secret blessing with all the projects that are left to be completed. I’m so excited to see everything come together and couldn’t be more PROUD AND HAPPY IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! So so so beautiful already

She is still rushing! It's not realistic for this house to be done and completed properly by December 15th. There no drywall, insulation, plumbing or electrical! These things take time. There will be more delays. Then there will be inspections and triple checking. Not to mention she says she wants to be MOVED IN by that time. It only has structure right now. Everything else typically takes many more weeks.

Honestly even though you had a setback on the siding, by doing projects yourself (for example the ceiling in the living room, the window restoration, demo, etc) you’ve undoubtedly saved a lot of time. So don’t be too upset about it, it would’ve been nice to keep the December 1st goal but without your hard work it would’ve taken way longer

Love your tile choices. The primary bathroom will be gorgeous! But a warning -- when we picked tile for our new bathroom, we were excited by some beautiful marble tile we found. The advisor loved it also but said never to use any hair dye or shampoos with dye in them (like the purple shampoo I have to keep my white hair white) because it would stain the marble. I knew then that we couldn't have marble because either we or our daughter would ruin it. So keep that in mind with your marble-tiled shower walls. p.s. I read a book years ago that said the key to aging well is to be flexible in your expectations and how you're living your life. I've tried to remind myself of that as I get older. Your take on the siding issue is a good example of that -- you're disappointed but you're simultaneously figuring out what you can do and complete during the delay and also finding things to celebrate (e.g., your bathroom tile at a much better price!).

I feel really strongly that the herringbone faux wood is a huge mistake. There are so many tones and it looks like fake wood-almost like an outdoor patio tile. And it’s very 2000/ farmhouse in a very outdated and not cute way. I also find it looks dingy-I’d never feel like my floors are clean. With one window and the dark subway tile too, it’s a lot of brown. The marble in the shower is a totally different style and era, it’s beautiful and matches the other design decisions throughout the house.

Here is my 2 cents about the siding issue. Considering the difference between linear feet and square feet which is absolutely basic in a order, I am placing blame on the "experienced?" person who took the order from you. It seems to me because this company does custom siding to match vintage siding, it would have to be in first place as a question to confirm the order. So don't beat yourself up over this...you won't ever make this mistake again.... But am dumping the error in the order takers lap.....Its too basic not to. So what about the contractor? Did he tell you what you needed or al least confirm your measurements and in what form? Anyone else want to chime in?

This episode auto played after the latest podcast episode, watching all of this again after all the things that you got done, The sidings took longer but arrived, everything got delayed but got finished at the end The penny tile in the bathroom, I didn't have the vision, like I couldn't imagine what you were talking about standing in the middle of the bathroom with that state, I really didn't get what it, however it turned out to be a very nice and cozy bathroom with the penny tile and the bathtub and everything. The living room, the kitchen, the front patio everything everything is gorgeous, On top of that you got a dream home in LA, I feel so happy looking back at all of this, like this was a struggle, however you managed to try to stay positive and the end everything went well. This is super inspiring~~ ❤️❤️

I'm actually looking into those same maravilla tiles to redo our shower and am so hyped to see someone else using them! Mistakes will happen, but it's the mistakes that help build a home.

In the end, your home will be perfect (and if it's not perfect, it's not the end). I remember when you showed the pile of siding and I thought it looked small for the size of the addition, but I know nothing about building, so I stopped worrying. I'm still amazed by your ability to take on such a huge project and keep going through all of the setbacks. You got this!!! Your hard work will pay off for sure!!!

Just a tip when ordering wood in those amounts. order like a square foot or 2 more. If you can not return it you can always sell it. But you will always have enough. If you order tight, you can come up short, because of cutoffs or a bad batch mixed in. This is beside your calculation messures mishap.

It also good to keep a few boards tucked away in storage in case you ever need to patch. Same as with flooring or tile or any other special element that you can’t just pick up at a big box store at any time.
