The scene where the priest is dyeing is perhaps the most potent spoken theology in 30 seconds or so ever stated. Vengeance is mine saith the Lord and When he said to Dantes after he said I don't believe in God "that does not matter He believes in you! " Perhaps my favorite line in all movies ever!

This is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. When I got my accident and I spent 5 months in the hospital, 2 of those months lying on my back, unable to move my left leg. I felt like I couldn't go on. I had a lot of things to overcome at the same time, so I kept repeating the birthday speech "Life is a storm, my young friend. You could be basking in the sunlight one moment and be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man (woman in my case) is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm, and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst. For I will do mine". It's stupid and corny, but it kept me going through one more day. I have been able to learned to walk again, to drive again. 6 years later, I'm still here and even though I have a lot problems still , the storm has passed. I saw this movie in theaters when it came out, and I have watched it at least once a year ever since

Fun fact: Abbe Faria (the old man in the prison) was a real person. He was the first person credited with saying that hypnosis was not witchcraft, just a form of suggestion. He spent 12 years in the Chateau D'If prison for reasons that were never recorded, was eventually released, and became a professor.

The movie is very mediocre And the ending is worst.. It's not even believable that after those years of misery everything would end with kiss and make up. "hey you killed the father that i adored who raised me for 16years, but since you're my real dad anyway, it's all fine." "oh mercedes, though you married another and got screwed a thousand times by him, since you loved me all these years anyway, let's be lovers again" It's just too simplified. At least try and show some moral complexity.

@@edmondbezhukov5438 The movie is perfect. As one as read the book and reading it again because of the movie. This movie improved on the book on my opinion. As for what you said you can not blamed Mercedes for what Fernand has done or that fact that she married and screwed him at the situation she had to face. The moment she knew Edmond is alive she went to kiss him because she truly loved only him. She was never a part of the scheme against Edmond and Edmond knows it. As for the Albert I think you see trough the movie how Fernandtreat him bad not to mention Fernand almost killed Mercedes and almost made Albert try to kill his own father but even with all this you do see in the end of the movie that Albert is truly sad at Fernand death.

@@totomomo18 Dumas got it right in the end. The Prisoner of Château d'If (Узник замка Иф) is a 1988 Soviet drama film directed by Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. The director first saw Nadira Mirzayeva (played Haydee) during casting at a choreographic school in Tashkent. Later they had a workplace novel, which in 1995 became the director's third official marriage. 20 years of marriage ended the beauty of an oriental young woman. Du as knew Haydee was invincible and Mercedes was no rival to her and no other woman was a rival to Haydee. Life imitating art. Dumas knew that the beauty of an oriental woman is unbeatable and they have no ring or children to hold that passion. Watch the movie Admiral (2008) Directed by Andrey Kravchuk. The film shows the true History of the passion of Admiral Alexander Kolchak and Anna Timiryova. It is not because the man is going to marry or have children with a woman that she will be his greatest passion. Anna Timiryova's True History shows how it is in real life,.

Your last sentiment was correct, the book was a cautionary tale against revenge and Edmond originally had a bit of a fall from grace because he chose that path. This movie did change a lot for a more happy ending. Normally i don't like when people tamper with stories and stray from the source material, but the way it's executed here is masterclass and rivals Dumas' original. I've never experienced revenge catharsis so strongly in any media than i have this film.

Definitely treat yourself and read the book. It is so good. Among the changes were there being way fewer characters, and how exactly each revenge played out. And what you said about the "God will give me justice" missing the mark is more addressed in the book. While Edmund lost his faith in the movie, in the book, Edmund barely saw his efforts as revenge. He saw himself instead as an agent of God's justice. In this role, he actually forgives and provides money for one of the main people who betrayed him (a character missing from the movie). But his arrogance of assuming his will is God's will almost leads to disaster, causing him to take a step back and find humility again. Literally the only thing that is not amazing in the book is his love life. I will not spoil it for anyone, but I actually like this movie version better.

That one character gets cut out in a lot of retellings, and even some editions of the book! Honestly, it's not too hard to see why. Imagine someone so greedy that they use a diamond someone gave them to cut a glass window for a robbery. What a putz.

@Ἑλένη I don't see how Edmond is Menelaus, or how this film is "the Iliad". It has more in common with "the Odyssey" than anything else. A protagonist early 20 years away from home to suffer pointlessly, encountering monsters along the way back, coming back in disguise for final revenge? Mercedes is also Penelope in spirit, marrying Fernand but only to protect her son and keeping Edmund's memory alive. Thank you for the recommendations though, definitely going to check all of them out!

"He couldn't do it or he chose not to do it." He couldn't do it. If you're trying to hang yourself with your own arm strength, clearly as soon as your life begins to slip, your lose your grip and fall, causing your life to come back, lol. Yes, God gave him justice, from the Praise finding him in prison, to Jacopo being there on the island the very day Edmond escaped, to finally giving Edmond the focus needed to take one of the swords from Fernand's hand and stab him with it; the Lord guides him to what he needs.

A good Hollywood adaptation. It left a ton from the book out, but it's still a good movie. If you want something closer to the book, the 1975 movie starring Richard Chamberlain is really good. My favorite, the miniseries from 1998 starring Gerard Depardieu, that is gold. It's 6.5 hours, but totally worth it. Really goes into details of his revenge schemes, but completely satisfying.

Depending on the depth of betrayal, seeking revenge might be the most practical avenue towards any semblance of catharsis. Some wounds simply cannot be healed by time and only become more infected with decay as each moment fades from future to present to past. For those I love, I will do great and terrible things...

From my perspective revenge is in our notion of the universe balancing itself out. Frank Castle says in Punisher "it is not vengeance, it's punishment." He knows that they are bad, he knows they have waaaaay too much money and can buy any lawyer, or threaten any jury.

I loved the book which I read in middle school and this movie is among the best of the many Hollywood version which have been made. It is so emotionally satisfying to see this powerless victimized man plot his vengeance with cold, calculating intelligence. In the end the Count, being basically a decent man, repudiated his unchristianlike acts of revenge. It is right that the hero eventually sees the error of his ways, but I am glad that he got his vengeance first .

Alexandre Dumas' work makes for great adaptations, and TCoMC is a fantastic tale of ruthless revenge. For more of his work, I would recommend the 1993 Three Musketeers (beware, Michael Wincott is in it too 😅) as well as The Man in the Iron Mask. Both have amazing casts. The specials on my Blu Ray say there was a shoemaker who's "friend's" had him wrongfully imprisonned. There he had a priest as a cell mate who died and left him some money, which he then used to take revenge. That's probably the extent of the "true story". Alexandre Dumas really liked to take his inspiration from true events and then spin them into his own tale.

This is the worst adaptation of the book. On the website allocine tells us that France will make a new adaptation of the book. "Les scénaristes précisent qu'il s'agira d'une relecture de l'œuvre d'Alexandre Dumas, qui a déjà été adaptée plus d'une trentaine de fois au cinéma et à la télévision. Après ce diptyque, Alexandre de la Patellière et Matthieu Delaporte continueront d'explorer l'œuvre du célèbre auteur français puisque le duo prépare également une nouvelle adaptation du Comte de Monte-Cristo." Denys de La Patellière, father of screenwriter Alexandre de La Patellière, he was the director of the French series Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1979) with Jacques Weber which was the most faithful adaptation of the book. This series is 100% faithful to the book.

Big difference between movie and book - in the book, Danglars is the main villain. I’ve wondered why they made that change. I guess for some reason they preferred Edmund to go after the guy who stole his woman. Also, Albert is actually Fernand’s kid in the book and Edmund and Mercedes don’t get back together. On one hand, it’s more realistic that they don’t because so much has changed. On the other hand, that would be too sad in a movie so you’ve got to see them get back together. FYI - This movie had the same director as Prince of Thieves, that’s why Guy of Gisborne ended up in this movie too. Based on what Kay says, he (Kevin Reynolds) should hire better hairdressers.

@@zvimur I like Wyncott in anything I see him. He's just got such charisma in my opinion. Whether he's the warden, the captain from Three Musketeers, his character in The Crow, or even Captain Elgin from Alien Resurrection (terrible movie, but great cast)

Thoroughly mediocre. Miscast (the actress who plays Mercedes is wretched, and Caviezel lacks intenity), with a weak and pointlessly anachronistic script, this fails to capture the grim fatalism of the novel. This version is much better: The Prisoner of Château d'If (Узник замка Иф,) is a 1988 Soviet drama film directed by Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It wasn't turned into a poorly written pastishe of adventure.

So I watched this movie for the 1st time today and really enjoyed it. About halfway I started to get a little antsy and then the movie started to drop little bombs of interest and picked up considerably. When Albert appeared, you asked "Is that Henry Cavill?" while my reaction was "Is that Superman?" lol. #Kayreacts I've got a couple movie suggestions for you if you haven't seen them yet. For a great (and bizarre) Guy Pearce movie, please watch "Memento (2000)". Another epic movie with Guy is "Ravenous (1999)". Be warned, it's really rough and gory but worth it. Some decent Jim Caviezel movies are "Frequency (2000)" and "Angel Eyes (2001)". The latter isn't a great film by any means but it has its charm in my book.

Maybe God allowed that to be The Count's justice. It looked like The Count was simply getting revenge. But maybe, God set everything up to happen just the way it did and it was also pleasing to The Count. God hardened his heart to carry out his personal revenge thus, God's justice.

In the book, Dantes (as the Count) describes himself as an "agent of Providence", implying that everything that happens has the blessing of God.

What the hell! This is one of my favourite films, yet at no point have I recognised that that was Henry Cavill! I seriously watch this all the time and am really good at recognising people but missed this so many times. It's like the obvious thing you don't notice until someone points it out.

God will grant me justice is not part of the book. I do think the movie is a really, really fun watch, and very well acted. It’s flawed like a lot of early 2000’s blockbuster movies are. The “kings to you,” although clever imo, also not in the book. They weren’t the friends the movie makes them out to be. In fact. To my recollection in the book, (just reread it) the Priest, as he’s called in the film, didn’t make any big deal out of Edmond seeking revenge. So yeah. Still. Love the movie. Guy Pearce rules.

My favorite fiction book, though I've never seen a film or miniseries do it justice - the last third of this film is pure Hollywood rewrite. One movie that did do justice to the original novel is 1934s Tale of Two Cities, with Ronald Coleman. I don't don't know why, but I'd love to have #KayReacts to the 1987 Nuts, with Dreyfuss & Streisand - adult theme & language though.

This is like a several hundred page novel condensed into a 2 hour movie. There was a lot lost in translation. A couple of notes - the author based the story on a real newsletter account at the time about a falsely accused man killing his accusers. Of all the crimes against our fellows, bearing false witness might be the worst. If I were ever to come to Faith, it would have to resemble Abbe Faria. I think he represented the spirit of Faith in the dark night of the soul, and I've never shaken it. I don't think this is just about revenge. I think when institutions and our fellowship with others have become corrupt - we have no justice. So in that disparity we seek vengeance, so that's the tragedy. Lastly, without the Count of Monte Cristo there is no Bruce Wayne / Batman. Money isn't their superpower, self-possession is. The "fuck you money" couldn't liberate them from their obsessions.

Mercedes' pregnancy lasted longer than a whale's. Too many changes from the book but then Hollywood messed with Homer (Achilles died before they built the horse, Agamemnon on his return) and the Gospel (the Baptist was only 6 months older than Jesus and the woman saved from stoning was not Mary Magdalene). And the lousy tv Odyssey left out Argo the faithful dog (unforgivable). 1968 Od.with Irene Papas, Jesus by Zeffirelli and Monte Cristo with Depardieu. Books, Great Epics and Scriptures are not Xena (love Lucy L.though).
