Hi Trogly, I enjoy your channel. Just wanted to point one thing out- the frayed edge inside the PU route is not from dull router bits. It's actually a normal consequence of routing through an open pocket. The main (large) PU route is done first and the small deeper cavity on each side is done next. It's obvious in this situation the toolpath of the bit moves clockwise so when the bit moves past the corner in question there's no material there to support it hence the frayed fibers. Notice the frayed corners of each small route are opposite each other. One at 3 the other at 9 o clock from the perspective shown at 6:05 in this vid. The other 2 corners are perfect because the bit, spinning clockwise, is cutting into wood and not into air as it moves past that corner. I hope that made sense 👍

Watching you has even sparked my interest in possibly getting into buying and selling guitars (I'd be way to small to compete against you) as a supplement to my retirement income. I love that all maple Gibson, it's beautiful and unique. I envy you in what your doing your only boss is yourself. Great video Austin. 👍

I remember trying a bunch of these in stores when they came out, and I loved the way they sounded. The natural one was the best of the lot, though, because they painted the back of the neck on all of the other colours, which completely ruins the feel of that lacquered maple. Also, the natural versions had translucent black pick guards, so it might be hard to find a replacement if you didn’t get the original in the box (that may have only been the sg, though).

This is a Gibson I would buy. If I could afford it. I only use maple fretboard Fenders… No particular reason why. I just like it. The fact that Gibson does not do maple… and charges lots of money for something I don’t want keeps me from pulling the trigger. But alas… Gibson (or the aftermarket) is probably charging WAY too much for it. So I’ll probably just keep using Fenders and enjoying the fact that they produce what I want for a price I can afford. But it’s nice to dream.👍🎸🥃

Thanks, Austin, for the info that the "Raw Power" model name was used more than once. I didn't know that. I do slightly remember the all-maple ones. I remember being slightly offended that the classic Les Paul wood recipe was being ignored. I don't really know what I was thinking, because I have no business being a purist. I was convinced that these axes had to be heavy; thanks for putting that misconception to rest. Back in the day, I would probably not have rocked the Raw Power Les Paul model. These days, I'm more receptive to the concept. Once again, thanks for this great video!

My Gibson L6 Midnight Special in Yellow Sparkle also has a 3 piece maple neck. What I love about Gibson maple necks is that the inlays are mother of Pearl.. not the boring black dots found on Fenders. The body of the L6 is also solid maple.. these articulate maple tones are completely familiar to me. So if you’re interested in a solid maple Gibson, maybe also check out the L6 Midnight Special.

I haven't seen a maple fretboard on a Gibson since my brother's old (and long since traded off) Grabber. It would have been cool if they kept the headstock a natural maple as well. Amazed at the comments regarding the Raw Power. When the second batch launched the overall reaction to the guitar was: "you can't sell a Gibson with a maple fretboard!" What really was the biggest issue with these guitars was the thin finish it has was very prone to chipping, which is why it is probably near to impossible to find a mint second hand version... I have the olive version of the LP and it got finish issues by week 3. Thanks for keeping these quirky models in the public's eye!

coil taps are easy peasy if you're up to the task. you just need to fish out the wire splice connecting the two coils together from the pickup. you also might have to remove metal pickup covers and/or tape, do so gently. one you've got the wire connection exposed, just solder an additional signal wire to that point, heat shrink, and re-tape in place. then run the wire with the pickup's other conductors, to a switch of some kind which is also connected to ground. of course this only allows one of the coils and not the other, but its the easiest way. it's a little more complicated to have either coil tapped, it requires a specific 3-way switch and connecting the pickup differently.

Honestly I don't mind maple fretboards, but if you look at the Ibanez RG's from the late 80s with the maple boards, they really do get dirty when they're completely unfinished. It always ends up looking bad. The most finish I'll go with on a fretboard or a neck is a satin finish. I love the natural necks on these because they're probably just more comfortable and easy to play. My biggest pet peeves with Les Pauls' are those really high gloss necks. Especially on the customs. They limit my ability to move around the neck comfortably. That's why I like the maple neck on this. If I ever get an LP custom I'm just gonna sand the neck down so I don't have to fight the neck when I play. It'll look horrendous, but It'll play well.

If you’re looking for another guitar that is exclusively one type of wood for everything, Fender is selling an all-rosewood Telecaster these days (chambered rosewood body, and rosewood neck & fretboard). That might be interesting to document.

I think the pick guard would help balance the look of the black headstock as well.

So, supposedly the whole draw of the 57 Classic model in itself is that they were “random wound”. I thought they were hand-wound but I’ve never been able to verify that. The point being is that just like the original PAF’s the 57 Classics are supposed to represent that “mystique” of the PAF by having very similar “random” winding so some could be under-wound & be a little weaker while some would be over-wound etc. I think the idea of the 57 Classic Plus, and I could be wrong on this, but I think much like the T (think 498T, 500T etc) the pole pieces are a little wider to match the bridge string spacing compared to that of the neck. While I’m not 100% certain on the previous spec I am 100% certain the Classic Plus are “overwound” compared to that of the 57 Classics. So how could you know if you’re overwinding a Classic Plus is if the idea of the Classics was to be “random windings”? They have a range that use to define the Classics vs that of the Classic Plus pickups. But, that’s likely why you’re getting close to Classic Plus readings in the bridge pickup is that it’s likely a little over-wound like a Classic Plus.
