It's weird that he starts as old as he does though bc his date of birth is estimated to be around 1818, meaning he should start at around 18 years old and you should be able to use him for quite a long time. EDIT: Got an answer from a dev about Tewodros’s age, apparently it’s that way bc at the start of Vicky 3’s development they hadn’t implemented a tool to give characters exact birth dates yet, only starting ages, and while starting ages were easy for characters who exist at game start, for characters like Tewodros who could hypothetically spawn in at any moment, it was a bit harder and they ended up selecting 45 as his starting age, which is weird to me bc he nearly always spawns in during the first year, but they do plan to fix the issue with his age regardless which should make Ethiopia a lot stronger when it happens bc you’ll be able to have Tewodros for like half the game.

Make your market liberal into a general, then give him leadership of the faction. It seems to keep him around a lot longer in my recent tests.

You could get corn laws with isolationist policy even in 1.6, you just had to get +25% cost which was hard because you can't sell corn to 9352 nations. Now it is easier to get with all the farms production decreases. Also I think there is a correlation between popularity and "lifespan" of market liberal landowner, the more popularity, the more he's here🧐

Corn laws can be activated if you're isolationist and grain is 25% more expensive. This was such a good change, I think it was 1.6 that introduced that,

1852 with no attack on Egypt by the Ottomans is unthinkable. The longest I could get was 1845 at 1.6, when you could still get recognition from demanding it against the USA at game start. They generally make demands or the Ottoman incursion triggers by 1841. Also, trying to take Sinai was a mistake, since it is far away, barren, and it attracts GP attention whenever they feel like a Canal would be beneficial to their interests. Blue Nile has all the 4 Egyptian chop-chops at game start, so taking it would cripple their economy hard and give you an useful asset.

The central African countries, Madagascar, Zulu, and perhaps some others start without shaft mining, which I believe is the lowest technology bracket. Edit: But out of countries with flavour, Ethiopian nations definitely are low tech.

Never rolled the Big Daddy, but started as Aussa and the lack of troops issue is solved through gobbling up neighbors. You kinda go along the coast line and then turn inwards. The trick is that the annexed states leave barracks behind so each annexation gives you more troops. Now it's very save-scammy in any case to be fair. But doable and fun. You also need to start annexing day one, otherwise someone's gonna win over others and become too big for you to take down. Attacking a nation fresh out of a war is key too, since they didn't have time to rehire pops into their barracks. Don't believe the battalion number, go into the provinces and check their barracks to actually see the number of troops they have ;D

Also I agree with the other commenter that your "bad start" runs are nice because of the underdog aspect (I mean, at the very start you don't really have options if your country is sufficiently behind, but the mid game is interesting).

Ethiopia was my last 1.6 run and I found it super fun. It's quite hard to expand, but in 1.7 it seems like GB doesn't start with a colony in Kenya any more so rushing colonization and going towards Tanganyika and Lindi might be a feasible way to solve your crippling resource shortage. I also could never invade Egypt for Eritrea, even with Tewodros, as my defensive generals couldn't match the Egypt push and Tweodros kept getting pulled into defensive fights. I'll try it again in 1.7 and see if I can form some kind of pan-African sovereign empire out of all the GP colonies late game, seems like it would be a fun goal to aim for.

This is really suboptimal run. You can conquer easily all of Ethiopia in 2-3 years. First war is the hardest, I chose Shewa as my start, and the goal is to fast form Ethiopia with 2 peovinces to get claim on 2 more, so you would generate less infamy. I had cheese before Theodorus came to power, baiting ai to attack my 1 battalion army while 25 stack was garnisoned behind. After defeating 2 states in first war, gojjam and someone else, i conquered harar, and southern minors, forming ethiopia. I also had to exile at the start landowner to get jingoist, so I would rush prof. army, then tenant farmers, interventionism if i reverse swayed for some tributary, which I didnt cos I was role playing as Theodorus. Egypt is easy to beat, just sway "glorious" Ottoman empire for Syria, and get Eritrea, free Sudan, transfer Hedjaz and some reps. Then I had luck getting cautious trait on ruler, and start conquering neighbourging provinces with east african culture with lots of pops. Meanwhile, i made 2 boats and naval invade Gaza into Transvanal and Oranje. I could ve get Mexico in reverse sway as well as Bejing, but cos of rpg i only took qing war reps, limiting myself on Africa. I also conquered my way to reach Sokoto. Too bad I didnt go past 1850ies.

@generalistgaming pin this, so with the new update the reason almost any country now can get corn laws is because of a new event that happens in indonesia and affects every single country from what i know, a volcano erupts in west java and it ruins agriculture, globally, this means your SoL will be ruined for a majority of countries and make radicals like never before, i kind of like this change i hope PDX don’t remove it (liberalising takes long enough as it is).

If you're interested in trying out Ethiopia, you can also start as Aussa who starts with Mercantilism, and the International Trade, Centralization and International Relations techs too. Downside is you don't get access to the Arab-speaking culture group though, but you still get to whip around big daddy's belt.

i actually almost never take the outlaw prince, its already easy enough to form ethiopia as is but imagine if you plan to go to war with Egypt for Eritrea it would be incredibly convenient

I wish you would do more terrible start runs - with your skill runs like Russia are cakewalks while making a run to defeat the British as someone like one of my favourites the Zulu ain't easy for anyone. Ethiopia ironically enough actually has some of the better techs in Africa, many don't even start with manufacturing or mining unlocked.
