@@AllinoneDisha562 I mean I get it but like- FX traumatized MQ 😭😭 like MQ spent 800 years searching for a RED PEARL, as insignificant as it was, to prove to FX and XL that he cared, and wouldn’t go as low as to steal something from his prince just because he was poor. Like FX throws insults and comments about his past as a servant when that was trauma for him. (Not only FX but also HC and even XL sometimes) I really just don’t understand why people ship them, it doesn’t really seem like enemies to lovers, it seems like classist bully and victim of classism-of 800 years…

Lolll he was definitely not overthinking- many times in the novel did literally every main character (Xianle quartet) comment at least ONE thing about him- even XL. All of them- EVEN hualian- hit him at least once. Plus, he was a servant, bullied and shunned, and chained in place by all people because of the classism. Even FX and XL, every time he tried to explain every little thing they misunderstood (literally everything he did- even the 33 god thing.), would ignore him or make him shut up. People usually say that Mu Qing is paranoid and insecure for not believing they were friends, and this is something I heavily disagree with. Just because Xie Lian saw him as a friend, does not mean that Mu Qing was treated like one by any means. Their relationship was incredibly one-sided in a way that Mu Qing’s pain was always seen as secondary to both Xie Lian’s feelings and pride. Mu Qing was treated like a servant, even after he was not being paid, which places the aspect of friendship in contention with the master/servant relationship between the two. Friendship does not exist on one friend serving the other, it lies on mutual and equal care and devotion, something which Mu Qing, or even Feng Xin for that matter, were never given. Friends do not wash your laundry or take care of your parents, especially when their own elderly, blind mother is living in poverty in the middle of a war. Xie Lian is valued far more so that his parents are cared for, whereas Mu Qing’s mother was never included in hopes of survival. And then when Mu Qing asks to leave to care for his mother, Xie Lian laments how he thought friendship was forever, but does not realize that his association of Mu Qing serving him while neglecting his own familial duties was not friendship. Character sympathies also often lead to excusing what a liked character did. When Mu Qing goes to give Xie Lian rice, this rice is thrown back at him. Perspective also plays a role because as much as fandom likes to say Mu Qing cannot communicate, in his earlier days, he was barely given a chance to and was instead yelled at and spoken over. Xie Lian also chases Mu Qing out with a broom and, this cuts his cheek. We are more likely to brush this off, saying it wasn’t as intense a situation as the 33 officials scene, and that XL was upset. We are more likely to give XL the benefit of the doubt for his various questionable actions because we have seen his struggles, however Mu Qing is not giving this benefit as, although his struggles are identified, they are rarely truly acknowledged by the narrative other than in regards to how it impacts XL. XL’s humiliation is treated like a tragedy, yes, but then we look at Mu Qing’s humiliation - being chased with a broom which is not remedied in the next 800 years as brooms are continually thrown at him, Instead it’s called “comic relief.” Instead of the classist sentiments being acknowledged, it is laughed at and Mu Qing is called petty. Mu Qing is said to be rude, but such vitriol is often not directed at Hua Cheng who is also rude, or to XL when he admits he wanted to punch Mu Qing to death in the past. We’re more willing to create different moral codes for characters that we are shown perspectives of or are told are good by the narrative.. And his hardships, even after 800 years of wandering, were not even slightly acknowledged by XL. In fact, the broom joke (trauma) is still seen as a joke, and XL even laughs at it. Children of royalty play with jewels and gold as if they were toys, whereas people like MQ's mother still live in slums. Whilst XL attempts to stop others from bullying MQ and donates to the poor, not once does he challenge the ruling system that turns a blind eye to this discrepancy. For example, when MQ is accused of stealing cherries, the explanation XL gives to get the other disciples to back off is that he ordered MQ to pick the cherries for him. He doesn't attempt to correct the other disciples' classist views, or berate them for picking on someone of lower standing. (Which is… kinda classist of someone who was against it..) Again when he notices the Queen wasting cherries on creating facials, he doesn't note that this is a waste of food, but instead tries to change the subject so as to avoid hurting MQ's feelings. In other words, whilst he solves MQ's immediate problems, he doesn't ever make his stance absolutely clear and let others know that he won't tolerate discrimination. It's no wonder that MQ feels no sense of security and is always "thinking too much". It's understandable that XL's like this earlier on in the timeline, as it creates room for his character development. However 800 years later there's nothing to show that he's learnt anything from his years of wandering around as a homeless mortal. The most straightforward way would have been him showing his appreciation towards MQ and acknowledging his efforts, but we got NONE of that. And, just as HC was looking for XL for 800 years MQ was looking for a SINGULAR RED PEARL. Why? Because Xie Lian lost it the day he caught hong-er, and they blamed and accused HIM, MQ, of stealing it. No evidence, just immediate accusation. oh, and, that was later found to have been taken by HC… which I don’t blame him, he was a kid, but MQ got blamed for that. And you think mu Qing should have felt like they were Friends? Yeah, no. MQ was treated horribly. Obviously he wouldn’t feel safe around them. Obviously he would have trust issues, and bad communication skills. Because everytime he TRIED, he was ridiculed by FX, The guoshi, the royals, the other people in the palace who bullied him, and even XL. And later, HC chimed in too. Hence, the broom being thrown immediately the first time he saw him. We see the story mostly from XL’s perspective so we usually only think about him first, but if you really read into the lines, he, HC, and FX are just ignorant assholes honestly. I mean, yes, MQ has his flaws, but what of them were not taught to him, was he not raised to do? Anyway, sorry for the essay, but I’m just trying to explain in detail. I’ve learned in past discussions that people will not listen to what you have to say unless you give multiple different examples, and I apologize because I just have a random MQ essay for debates 😭 anyway I’m so sorry and I’m not trying to be rude at all!!
