the W108 is hella safe, the whole cabin is super rigid while trunk and engine bay are not, also the fire wall is shaped as to push transmission and engine downwards to deflect it from the passengers

Comfort over speed. Actually, comfort _and_ speed. Sure, not Ferrari fast, but this thing cam run pretty well. The 6.3 version was the world's fastest 4-door sedan back then. Also, an Autobahn cruiser, it could cruise at 130 mph all day long in the Autobahnen, and that's pretty impressive for a car from late 60's.

@@cyruswong9174 Exactly. 🍷🗿 Even if that is merely a tribute, because the AMG-designed/AMG-built M156 engine that powered the models sporting the -63 sufix and the "6.3" badge in the front fenders was actually a 6.2. 👀

Not as bad as you think, it was among the first cars to feature crumple zones engineered into the body, the steering column was telescoping and the steering wheel was mounted on a special hub that collapsed on impact. Probably the safest car of the late 60s/early 70s.

The reason why old cars are considered "better" is because yes, your risk of dying is higher in a crash, BUT But But. If you survive you don't have to throw away the whole car cause it's squashed like a tomato and you have to do fewer repairs, if you die you don't have to worry about repairing your car. You don't have to worry about anything, you're dead

Thank you for addressing the myth about old cars being "safer"! I've had that argument with boomers in Facebook car groups so many times, and it gets old so fast. "bAcK iN mY dAy We HaD nO aIrBaGs AnD wE wErE fInE" - yes, grampa, and all the people who weren't fine aren't here to share their side of the story, are they? Yes, older cars may have survived crashes with less cosmetic damage, but that was at the expense of the occupants. Modern cars are designed to sacrifice themselves to save the people inside.

Classic Mercedes were built to last. You might die in a significant collision (significant being key as these were actually quite safe cars as others have mentioned), but the car will live on for your family to drive for decades after, unlike anything from the last decade which will be scrapped from electrical failures or manufacturers dropping parts support for them. I don't understand driving expecting to crash. Safety tech only aims to reduce the severity of injuries in a collision, a rare event in driving, but it increases the risk people take while driving, therefore increasing the chances of being in a crash where your life depends on it. Put a spike in the middle of the steering wheel of every vehicle on the roads, and maybe actually educate people before giving them a licence, America, and you'd have far less risky driving and subsequent incidents occur. If you're actually concerned about crashing, 'Reg Local' is a good youtube channel to watch to learn how to drive to a far higher standard to avoid collisions to begin with. Known as 'advanced' in the UK, the Roadcraft/IAM/RoSPA level is what our emergency service drivers are taught to to be able to clock up to 150 mph on our roads safely, so it would dramatically improve your day to day driving to be able to be better prepared than even Teslas with all their sensors (that only react, never predict) for what can happen on the roads. If anyone looks at this 'advanced' level and thinks it's too much for them, you aren't truly committed to safe driving and any future collision you might be involved in will always have you as partly to blame for it, regardless of how insurance, etc divides up 'fault'. It might appear extreme compared to the basic test you passed to gain your licence, but that's just how extremely lacking *every* country's licence testing is, which the US amongst many others fall even further below. People shouldn't hold a licence if they can't drive to that 'advanced' level.

Hey Neil, little words of wisdom for you. You probably shouldnt make fun of what is more than likely to be, a good portion of your fan base throughout an entire video like this. Its a really good way to get yourself "canceled". When we say"built like a tank" we mean at normal day to day city road speeds. Where the fastest speed limit ive seen is 55mph. They will take the hit, yes, you will get hurt, but you shouldnt die, and unlike the other "new" car, yours will be fixable. I wrecked my classic pickup about 12 years ago,. head on doin about 45mph, had to be flatbeded home, but was only out of commission for a week before it was back on the road. The other vehicle was totaled. Whats funnier, is the other driver had more injuries than my due to all the safety equipment in his car. I was able to walk away with only a couple of bruised ribs. They had to go to the hospital. I was never told what for. Now, you get into a wreck on the highway above 50mph, lets be honest here, most of us are going a minimum of 70mph regardless of the actual speed limit, not only is the car going to be totaled regardless of its age, but there is also a very low probability of you coming out of it alive let alone uninjured. Most wrecks at highway speeds tend to be extremely violent in such a way that the safety tech wont matter, and if ima die in a car wreck, I at least wanna die in something cool. Im sorry, but a smart car just isnt cool. Unless its been k-swapped in which case its just down right dangerous which is what makes it fun/cool. Now for some education since you dont seem to want to educate yourself on your own. 1st - Mercedes has always been an industry leader for new technology so they will always have the cutting edge tech for a few years before it trickles down into the rest of the industry. 2nd - Setbelts were first invented in 1959 by Volvo but wasnt made mandatory until 1968. Thats almost 10 years that seatbelts were an option that you could tick off on the order form when buying a new car. For that reason, there are still a ton of cars between 59 and 68 on the roads today that dont have seatbelts in them. However, even though they were optional, if your car was equipped with them, it was still mandatory for you to use them.
