Those tips, when adjusted properly, should emit a whisper.I use a slight reduction flame to regulate heat and reduce oxidation of the connection. And a slight oxidizing flame to melt the base metal for welding ferrous metals.Oxygen and acetylene ratios and pressure settings are critical to the type and size of the attachments and the specific work to be done. There’s a lot more to this work than just twisting knobs. It is much like selecting the optimal electrode size, type, and amperage for a welding process.

Thank you very much, this solves all my dislikes of oxy-acetenyl setups. Those original double hoses really do inhibit dexterous maneuvers.

I have had one of the Smith torches for over 20 years. It is the only torch I use for refrigeration and smaller equipment. The only way I need a bigger torches if I’m working on a rack system where I get into 2 1/2 inch pipes they are the best little torch for braising I found yet.

I have torches in all sizes (up to scarfing torch but I don't have any two-foot thick plate to cut, yet...) and that little Gentec is a fine size for small detailed work. Torch patents expired so long ago companies copy each other and that Gentec is an approximate copy of the Smith Little Torch. Gentech equipment is decent and if you already have regulators you can buy the torch without them to save money. You can of course get the small hoses separately and you can get stepdown adapters to use them as a lightweight "whip" at the end of larger hoses. All easily found online but your local welding supply can get them if you don't mind spending more. Western is the dominant brass welding gas fitting maker and their catalog is worth studying. While brazing is tough and shock-resistant you can also gas weld steel with acetylene and that torch size is perfect for light sheet metal. Many single purpose torch users don't know all the cool stuff acetylene can do for them. For example if you haven't tried using a (single, not rosebud) heating tip to "wash" off a rusted nut by heating then turning up the oxygen to use it as a tiny cutting torch give that a try on some scrap. You can also gas weld thin tubing like exhaust pipe with some practice.

Like 0 penetration into the joint on those braze joints. It's not and edge seal that keeps the joint tight it's good penetration deep into the joint that does it. I spent a good portion of my second year revisiting braze jobs where I didn't focus on penetration but on an edge seal and shoulder like in this video.

Our school had the same kits, but the hoses were not replaceable, and one with the torch. The hoses ended up leaking pretty quickly. This was 20-25 years ago. It had all the same tips. Was really nice while they worked, especially when repairing coils.

I wonder if backing off the regulators and clearing the lines would have helped the lines last longer? Everyone, me included shuts off the tanks and let's the torch leak out.

@@dand3975 They were stored on the shelf, disconnected from the regulators. May have been that the rubber dried out. They had like a nylon braid covering the rubber. I don’t remember the brand, or where they were made.

Probably buy the Victor G150 brazing kit instead I don't trust Amazon brands when it comes to safety. Although I think Victor now made in China too maybe a higher standard then no name Amazon brands.

Ya, those used to be called jeweler torch I would suggest cutting the joints to see... not sure if it's the fast forward, I didn't see the proper cherry red and it looks like you just melted the sil phos but didn't get the heat all the way up the joint

You ever try mapp gas instead of Acetylene burns little lower temp probalby don't need 6000F for copper.

Light weight will make it a time saver too, those small hoses will be much nicer to work with. I noticed the 2 regulators were different on the torch carrying rig.

Does this setup have enough heat for brazing in compressors and TXV valves? I own an ice cream store and I am learning so I can work on my own soft serve machines since my tech is getting older and won't always be around. He uses just an acetylene torch on the smaller stuff, but switches to a full sized oxy acetyle torch for installing the 2 ton compressors and the TXV valves used on these machines. Lines are only 1/2" max, but the compressors and valves right at the line are big heat sinks. I am trying to get a single setup to do the smaller 1/4" lines plus the larger vales and compressors.

Ya like that one, you should try the Smiths "Qwik Braze" it is even better than that one. It will even braze 3 inch copper. Went to it in 1999, and never looked back.

That compact torch isn't really new, I had one of those kits like 20 years ago. Don't remember the brand name, but it was a nice little kit. The hoses got pin holes in them and had to get a new set of the regular big hoses. Now I just use a turbo torch.

Same here. Two sets. The hoses were not replaceable. They were permanently attached to the torch. Both hose sets ended up leaking. Nice setup, but didn’t last. These came out at least 20-25 years ago

Now if someone in the industry would just realize we hate the heavy a_s bottles, they make small ones but w.o. the regulator, I'm getting older and despise these d. Heavy tanks, I'd choose small bottles ,even if you have to use more.

As a big fan of your videos typically, may I request your attendance to safety during your videos as many folks of varying skill levels are viewing your amazing content. Might you committ to losing the Bic Lighter? As it is really a pretty unsafe means to ignite a flame for brazing/soldering. Additionally, it would not hurt to wear eye protection and gloves, as the proper PPE or Personal Protective Equipment for the tasks you're demonstrating. Thank You for Your consideration.

If you're going to DIY a home HVAC system, you'll be able to buy a *complete* set of all the HVAC tools you'll need for the job (including an oxy/acetylene torch set with tanks), and still pocket around two thousand bucks. And you can always resell any tools you don't want to keep after the job is done.
