The public domain thing is only for the Steamboat Willie film and the characters in it. "Mickey Mouse" is under trademark which never expires and they have copyrights on each individual version of Mickey Mouse through out the years. It's going to be impossible to use Mickey Mouse legally for a very long time maybe forever if Disney does some legal/lobbying shenanigans.

This really supports the argument that art style and art direction is way better than realistic graphics. Most games that try for high end realism will look outdated in a few years. But games that have a unique style like Windwaker, Cup head, or this, will almost be timeless

The consumers dictate the market. Cash grabs keep getting made because they keep making money. When people stop supporting bad practices, the bad practices will stop. Stop buying/playing EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Blizzard, Epic, ect. Stop giving them money and it'll change.

bit of a nitpick here but I hope they give lots of attention to the environment, as it currently looks kinda uninteresting. They should take inspiration in games like Hi-Fi Rush or even Cuphead has this too where the environment also has a lot of life brought into it through animation.

This looks really cool, but I wonder how long it lasts. It's mostly the artstyle that's selling it, but with most of these games I get used to that after an hour of playing and it starts to feel less special. And I'll be honest: judging on the trailer the game doesn't seem to offer a lot of interesting things besidest the artstyle and thematic. I don't know. This feels like a game that will be incredibly fun to play for 1 hour and then gets boring really quick.

It kinda comes with the territory. There's an argument to be made that old-school FPS games should worry more about pacing, but at the same time, their relentlessness is what makes them fun for people like me.

Granted its not super gorey i wish the violence was more slap stick like it's inspiration. Cartoon characters back then would just walk away from gunshots with literal holes in their bodies, get crushed then wobble away flat as a pancake, things like that i would rather see.

I'm just gonna leave this here, Walt Disney did not invent the "rubberhose style", it existed for a long time, with Felix the Cat, Warner Bros, many other companies as well, this is just an art-style that's been abandoned by the industry in favour of more realistic/artistic animation since the god diddly darn 1930's. What I'm trying to say is, there's no need to wait for Mickey to enter the public domain like people have been saying in the comment section, anyone has been able to depict a mouse like this for a veeeery long time (as long as it's not actually Mickey Mouse, one to one).
