Honda revealed their plan to fight against EVs by revealing a new revolutionary hydrogen engine. Honda's CEO, just like Toyota's believes that hydrogen and ICE are the way forward, not EV, and he now put his money where his mouth is. And the entire EV industry is shocked. So why is Honda's hydrogen engine so revolutionary?

What do you mean “EVs did help cut emissions”? They’ve only just begun. Honda did not lead and does not lead the move to Hydrogen engines. They’ve been around for quite a while and Toyota is leading the push for Hydrogen engines.

I'm a long time proponent of phev. I've been driving a 2018 honda clarity phev and loving the money saved! Fifty cents per gallon of electric equivalent to gasoline! Every day use and average 4-5 gallon of gas per month! That being said 50-100 miles of battery would make a great improvement. Then if they wanted to eliminate emissions, pull out the heavy engine and transmission and replace it with a hydrogen fuel cell generator that can use a couple of the replaceable hydrogen tanks. These can be refilled at a lot of existing welding supply stores. No big infrastructure buildup.

The problem is developing a cost effective and practical hydrogen fuel station. Toyota Mirai and Honda Clarity are already examples of a hydrogen car. It doesn’t replace the convenience of charging at home with BEV. This video depicts an engine that looks like high maintenance versus an electric motor that doesn’t require maintenance. The reason is that an engine has too many moving parts and will wear over time.

This video is obviously paid for by Honda. Consumers have spoken. The backlog for evs is in the millions. Toyota has sold 20,000 hydrogen cars over a period of years worldwide. Tesla sells 5,000 car s per week..........from one plant. Hydrogen is a joke.....

While I agree about the hydrogen fuel stations, EVs have battery pack MAY last 7 years, and doesn't due well in cold climates. I've watched videos of EV users who found that when the temps dropped to ~35F (not even freezing mind you) in Oct, range was drastically reduced.

The problem with the "convenience" of charging at home is at least twofold. One is that any vacation trip removes that convenience. Two is that it is only available to the minority of people who live in a house, and not for the majority of people who live in apartments. In other words, BEV charging is not practical and does not scale well.

Before I moved out to Michigan in 1999, I was living in Nebraska and received printed information from a college/university in Ohio or Indiana, that they had success with a hydrogen powered Farmall tractor. They had some issues to work out, which was the inherit corrosive issues of water in internal combustion engines long term, as fuel like gasoline or especially diesel fuel does have some lubrication and rust prevention attributes. That was over 20 years ago! So I imagine, technology, and engineers have since worked on the idea. Hydrogen is the most plentiful element on earth and in the universe. Someday we will have Hydrogen Fusion powered electric power plants that supply energy with NO radioactive residue, and be pretty much neutral to environments.

In the entire state of California, there are a whopping 57 Hydrogen refueling stations, most near the Bay Area (there is one about a mile from my house - and I have never seen it being used). You ridicule the EV charging infrastructure that has over 73,000 chargers here in California, with another 120,000 planned by 2025, yet you defend a technology that has a mere 57 fueling stations for hydrogen. THAT is a mind boggling lack of situational awareness.

Now there may be special cases, for example in mining or shipping or for travel in cold places where this might be a good option but for most car journeys they have gone to a more complicated and costly solution. Looking forward to 30 year old battery cars where you can cheaply replace the battery to keep the car going... motor and electronics still in good shape, just need a new wind screen and headlight glass to keep the driving easy!

I believe an alternative vehicle energy source is needed until the electric/battery vehicle is perfected. What should the energy source be, I don’t know. I like many people live in very cold climate and far from large cities/centres to access medical specialists as an example. We get -20 to -40C during our winter months( 4 months of the year) and our spring and fall are still quite cold during nights. Most people don’t have a garage to store their vehicles in during the night nor is their covered/sheltered parking at any work. We don’t have large malls with underground parking, we don’t have any public transportation other than taxis. I’m not talking about a tiny community either, there is approximately a population of 100k within a radius of 150 miles. We need to travel a minimum of 250 miles to see a minority of medical specialists, and another 200 miles (total 400-450 miles) to reach most medical specialists and major hospitals. The present EV vehicles cannot and will not meet our needs. It would take days to travel for medical services and other services, work related meetings and so on one way, it would not start to get to work in -20 to -30 C degrees at home, never mind starting after a 8 to 12 hour shifts parked outdoors,….. I fully understand the need to change the vehicles’ energy sources but we are just not there yet to completely change in 2030 or 2035. How many people live in very similar cold temperatures globally? We are talking about millions of people who don’t have any alternatives such as public transportation and reside in remote areas. Moving is not an alternative either, we live in areas that provide minerals for your batteries, gold, silver, nickel, ……. and yes, lumber to build your houses, furniture, paper,….. And let’s not forget people, gas, fuel, and propane has a percentage of tax being collected for road maintenance and construction which the present electric EV doesn’t collect so the cost of electricity will need to be increased in the near future to cover maintenance and the construction of new roads. Once these costs are added to the electric bills, will it be cheaper? Will all electric usage be taxed including the lighting and heating of your homes as your EV will be charged at home on the same meter? All looks so beautiful but people are not fully informed on the benefits of going on the grid. What about the construction of wind turbines as an example, the pollution of construction of them, the unusable material once it’s life cycle is over (about 20 years), still using natural gas to make electricity, the environmental impact all the new technology will have on water, sea, land, our health, ……. Is nuclear the best way to go for environmental protection, long term cost, ….. think about all the solar panels being discarded at the landfills after 20 years of use, that isn’t much better than our present situation. Countries such as mine in Canada have all these materials that are recyclable but we have very little to no companies/industries that actually recycle the materials. Everyone willingly separate these materials to be picked up the curb then it ends up being sipped to another (poor) country and even worst being dumped in landfills unknowingly to the people. In our area that I know, probably most places in Canada, glass is not recycled, yet when I was younger, the glass milk bottles, pop and beer bottles and so on was washed and reused, and what was damaged was being recycled. Not anymore, why not? And to boot, people are being taxed to help save the environment, help to deal with the extra costs of recycling the material. Governments, industries, and the wealthy are misleading the people when it comes to recycle and saving the environment. It all boils down to money, who saves money, who can make more money by cutting corners and get away with it, lining the pockets of the rich, convincing people they are doing wonders with their tax dollars talking care of pollution, ….. and getting re-elected so they line their pockets even more. What is the solution? I don’t know but it sure isn’t what I have just discussed!!

Which is exactly why the government has had to bribe people to buy EV's for years now. The Achille's heel of EV's is the battery. It has ALWAYS been their biggest problem and always will be. Range is a huge issue with EV's because you simply can't recharge one in 5 minutes or less. You CAN refuel a hydrogen powered (either fuel cell or Hydrogen ICE) in under 5 minutes, meaning range isn't terribly important.

Range Anxiety is only a problem for journalists and people who have never owned an EV. EV owners don't suffer from it. EV batteries are NOT already good enough. Try driving cross country in one and see how long it takes you. Range doesn't matter to those who don't have to drive very far. I havent watched the video yet, but I'll go ahead and say no matter what Honda has up it's sleeve with this new engine...it wont stop the onslaught of EV's, because thats what politicians want, and thats where the money is. This isnt truly about staving off global warming and saving the planet, it's about consolidation of power. EV's are NOT the future, just the near future to wean the great unwashed masses from driving their personal transportation devices that uses relatively cheap and plentiful fuel pumped from deep inside the earth ("fossil fuels" is a term created by big oil to give it an air of scarcity..it's just a fortunate (for oil companies) happenstance that environmentalists also like using that term even though there are no fossils in crude oil) in favor of something far easier to control yet much harder for individuals to store...electricity. The ultimate goal is to end personal transport altogether...or at least for the common world citizen, the elites will still have that option. Anyone who thinks I'm talking conspiracy theory nonsense hasnt been paying attention for the last 20 years, but we will all see very soon. The environmentalists who also hate EV's are being marginalized and in some cases muzzled right now...but within 10 years you will begin to see them being unleashed to every state owned msm outlet in an effort to sway public opinion and get people to "do the right thing to save the planet from this terrible eminent crisis!"...and western governments will be all too happy to step in and save the day with massive public transport projects...of course paid for by the same people who will have no choice but to either use them or never leave their tiny highrise apartment in whatever megacity their country assigns them to live in.

Both Toyota and Honda are pumping a lot of R&D money into hydrogen powered vehicles. They understand the global infrastructure problems with EVs. All of the other car manufacturers went into panic mode when Tesla started taking market share in North America and Europe. Only China has been able to create the infrastructure to support EV charging. The rest of the world has no chance of getting any kind of infrastructure in place by 2030. Pumps in fuel stations can be converted into hydrogen, so it will be business as usual for hydrogen powered vehicles, with no queuing up for hours on end at a motorway service station waiting for a charger to become available. And no problem trying to charge a vehicle if you don’t have off street parking. EVs outside of China will become obsolete and the main manufacturers will have to spend more billions trying to catch up with Toyota and Honda in hydrogen powered cars.

The entire Japanese car industry is doomed. They're way too late to the EV market, their EV products aren't good, and they're heavily in debt. In a few years, almost all new cars will be EV. Every car maker is putting all their R&D into EV production. So, we have companies like Honda and all the oil companies bad mouthing EVs with false claims of being bad for the environment and needing new batteries. Tesla's with over 100k miles lose about 10% of battery capacity. New batteries won't need as many rare earths. 90% of charging will be done at home. Just plug it in at night, when prices are lower and the next morning, it's full. Not at charging stations. They don't need oil changes, or have transmissions that can go bad. You rarely have to use the brakes, so the brakes will last a lot longer. Oh, and they outperform gas cars by a lot.

Could you be any more clueless? There are a LOT of automotive repairs that get done outside the dealerships using aftermarket parts. Honda and Toyota make NO money off of those. However, how many non dealship shops can actually replace an EV battery? You'll have to replace the battery in that EV every 10 years at $10,000-$15,000 each time. That is a hell of a lot more expensive than maintaining an ICE. The roads are filled with ICE's that are over 10 years old that have only required regular oil changes, a set of spark plugs, a few serpentine belts, and a couple of lead-acid batteries to keep them running reliably. Even when the ICE actually does need a new engine around the same time the EV will need its battery replaced for a second time, Rebuilding the ICE engine costs a fraction of an EV battery, and unlike EV batteries, all of the parts that will be replace during the engine rebuild can be cheaply and easily recycled. Maybe Honda and Toyota are smart enough to understand that EV's actually suck.

@@craigcampbell8560 - apparently, you are the clueless one. Manufacturers have warrantees on their cars, and certain work must be done by an accredited shop in order not to void the warrantee. The dealer is usually the best place to get this work done. There are about 200 moving parts in an internal combustion engine that needs to be monitored for wear and tear, all which may need maintenance during the warrantee period. This will cost the dealer, and the manufacturer, money to perform those warrantee repairs. Electric motors have about 5 moving parts, depending on the design of the electric motor, making them much less prone to problems or failures. And, battery failures are extremely rare - and they are covered under virtually all manufacturer's warrantees for 100,000 miles or 8 years, much more than the typical warrantee for ICE vehicles. To paraphrase a line in your comment: "The roads are filled with EVs that are over 10 years old and have not required ANY drivetrain maintenance at all - no oil changes; no spark plug replacements; no serpentine belt replacements". Virtually no maintenance other than for parts that ALL cars, ICE or EV, have. Even brake jobs are needed much less often due to the regenerative functions of the motor while slowing down, which work as generators to charge the battery while slowing the car down with the resistance created in that process. And regarding recycling EV batteries - none of them are throw away. There is an entirely new industry that recycles used EV batteries, which can be reduced nearly 100% to recyclable materials, or are even repurposed as battery storage units for home and industry. There is virtually zero waste with used batteries which typically still have 70% capacity when retired. Educate yourself instead of publishing comments based solely on your dislike for EVs.

@4thdistrict476
@4thdistrict476 Жыл бұрын
Two times more practicle? Now that is funny. I charge my EV in my garage when I need it, just like I charge my smartphone. That is quite practical. It has as much range as the Subaru Outback it replaced, so how far I can drive on a charge is not much different than with a fill-up for the Outback. Yes, using public chargers on a road trip takes longer - about 20 minutes - but I would stop and use the bathroom, grab a bite to eat, and stretch my legs even when I drove the gas powered Outback., so the stops were pretty much the same amount of time. That is also quite practical. Plus, the cost to drive 250 miles with the EV costs about $20 worth of electricity at public charging stations (much less when charging at home overnight), compared to the nearly $50 it would cost to drive the same distance in my Outback. More examples of my EV being very practical. Add to that the less frequent service appointments. With no oil changes to make, no sparkplugs to replace, no air filter to change, much longer life for the brakes, I have cut my maintenance costs by 70%. That sound practical to me. By my calculations, I will be saving about $3,500 per year on fuel and maintenance costs with the EV. That means that if I keep it for 10 years (I kept the Outback for 17), I will have saved enough money to cover almost 65% of the cost of the car when I bought it new. Plus, the insurance on my brand new 2025 EV is actually a few dollars less per year than my 17 year old outback. Saving money is always practical. And you claim that EVs are not practical! In fact, Mr. Willful Ignorance, there are dozens of EVs available today that cost far less than the average cost of ICE cars do today., which is around $45,000. I have had my EV for four months. I have already saved a little over $1,200 in gas during that time. @Pete David Rare earth metals are not used in batteries. There is enough lithium on the planet to replace every one of the world's 1.5 billion cars many times over. The problem with lithium is not its rareness, it's that it takes 10 years to bring a mine on stream which is true of most other elements. This year CATL and BYD, the worlds number 1 and 2 battery makers have begun to produce sodium ion batteries in volume, these may well replace LiOn in time. LFP cells are also becoming increasingly the first choice as they use no cobalt or nickel and are 30% cheaper than NMC cells, the ones in most EVs today.....silicon anodes are also starting to come into use to replace graphite with much higher energy density, so expect to see cars with 600 to 700 mile ranges by end decade...the world has plenty of these materials but not enough manufacturing capacity but battery output has gone from 95 GWh globally in 2019 to 518 GWh in 2022 and is set to double in 18 months to over 1 Twh. There are enough battery factories under construction today to reach 3 Twh, enough to make about 50 million EVs a year...Hydrogen simply cannot compete and never will for light duty vehicles.

We normally stop every 2 and half to 3 hours before taking a 20 minute break to use the bathroom, get a drink or eat something. Newer EVs than ours can charge at 150 kW (VW Group cars), 250 kW (Tesla and the newer Hyundai and Kia's)....so yes, it would be nice to have the option of shorter stops but even in a fossil fuel car we would be making those stops anyway...not necessarily to refuel the car but to give ourselves a rest. Please read the Chemistry database definition of rare earths 'any of a group of chemically similar metallic elements comprising the lanthanide series and (usually) scandium and yttrium. They are not especially rare, but they tend to occur together in nature and are difficult to separate from one another.'
