Honestly, this mod should just be part of vanilla by default.

These are my results using the sodium mod in the fabric launcher! intel i3-4160 2 core 4 thread 3.6Ghz with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400. 1680 x 1050 resolution. Dedicated server running on same machine. View distance 8 chunks. 38fps vanilla. 52fps optifine. 60fps sodium. I appreciate that its a fabric mod because forge itself with no other mods installed drops my fps substantially and caused server lag due to running on the same machine, my idea is that this is due to the way forge create a handle to every internal minecraft variable whether or not they are used. I really appreciate the smooth lighting its perfect, I also want to mention something that was bugging me in vanilla which this mod fixed and you didn't mention, the fog. Vanilla fog is a straight line that moves as you move, meaning you can see farther at the edges of your screen while sodium fog is the same distance all round making it a lot more natural! Thanks again for sharing!

Potato PC owner here- I went from 30fps at best on my new laptop (Lowest settings, loaded singleplayer world and everything) to clocking in at 80-120 on Hypixel with decent graphics! I can finally record higher-quality video and I'm thrilled to have discovered this :D Even if your PC normally only runs at 15-30 fps it makes a massive difference!

There is a fork of the Sodium mod to forge, It is not compatible with some mods but it boosted my fps from 50 fps without shaders and fast leaves (with optifine and a bunch of mods like terraforge) to around 150.

with lithium + sodium, one of the most impressive things is how snappy chunk loading is.

I play on a 2017 Macbook Air (I know, I know) and I used to get around 40Fps with Optifine installed. After installing Sodium, Phosphor and Lithium I get around 75Fps. This is a game changer for me! Amazing, thank you! :)

Apparently JellySquid (the creator) was interested in making their mods compatible with Forge (which presumably would have included this), but not every Forge developer was exactly "friendly" towards them and Jelly was tired of fighting, so they dropped all support for Forge. A shame, as this seems like it would be a great addition.

It actually works. When i played minecraft vanilla on my laptoo with i3 4005u, 4gbpc ram=2gb mc ram Without graphics+500gb hdd it gave me 0-15 fps.after installing it raised to 70-200 fps. I was like shocked. I use to play vanilla mc on my server before the installation of this mod but now i can play on my internal server/single player. On the server it gave 20-100fps still laggy cuz of frame drops.But now i can enjoy mc without lag or frame drops.

Hi, I am here after experimenting: If you have a garbage pc in my experience Sodium and Optifine gave about the same fps (Optifine: 50-60 Sodium: 40-50) *But* the best thing about Sodium is: I got 40-50 fps in 8 render distance but when I used 32 chunks it still gave about 15-30 fps but in Optifine I get like 2 fps in 32 chunks. But Sodium is still a fairly new mod so after it gets updated more it can be way better than Optifine. Hope this helped :)

well i have a computer that was not good performance i was at like 10fps so i installed lunar that which only brought it up to about 30 so i did some optimizations and got an average of like 40-50 which i was happy about then i found fabric and sodium and i was mind blown i went from 40-50 fps ll the way to 70-130 if i play in full screen and if im in window mode i can get up too 200 fps i was shocked and could not believe what i was witnessing unfold right before my eyes thank you to who ever invented this mod you made my minecraft playable

I played Minecraft for the first time when the 1.5 update released. From there, I played it every day like it was my religion up until about the 1.9 - 1.10 era. I moved onto other games during that period of the game. Nowadays, Minecraft has been mostly replaced by the Forza Motorsport titles as the main games I play. Anyhow, back to the point of this comment, about a week ago, I built a new PC with an i5-12400 and an RX 6600, and so far, it's been a great PC! With the above said, I decided to do some benchmarking on it today to get a good idea of how it performs compared to other systems out there, and I was thoroughly impressed; I'm not used to having this much PC power! As I was wrapping up my benchmarking, I remembered that Minecraft is a very CPU and RAM intensive game, so to test the capabilities of my i5-12400, I booted the game for the first time in ages to get an idea of how the 12400 performs in very CPU demanding tasks like running Minecraft, and I was definitely a bit underwhelmed by the performance figures I saw. The i5-12400 handles the game very nicely at well above 100 FPS with all the settings maxed except for the render distance, which is very good performance indeed. That said, considering the i7-4770K/4790K were able to achieve between 500 and 1,000 FPS in Minecraft back in the day, I was definitely a bit surprised to see my i5-12400 getting under 200 FPS considering it's roughly eight to nine years newer and MUCH faster than the i7-4770K/4790K. It's disappointing that the optimization of Minecraft is so bad these days. So, I did some internet searching and stumbled across the Minecraft Sodium mod, and at first, I thought the claimed performance uplift was clickbait, so I was a little skeptical, but I downloaded and installed it anyway out of curiosity to see what it was like. After installing the mod, I was genuinely blown away when I saw how much it increased the framerate my i5-12400 and RX 6600 are able to deliver in Minecraft. The performance increases the mod claims are most certainly not clickbait, and it's an amazing thing! 🙌 I went from averaging around 100 to 150 FPS prior to the mod, and now, with the mod, I'm averaging between 300 and 1,000 FPS in a typical survival mode world with the settings cranked to their max besides the render distance. It's very reminiscent of what the i7-4770K/4790K were able to deliver all those years ago, and with how much bigger, more complex, and less optimized Minecraft is today than it was in 2013 to 2015, that's a truly impressive feat! I'm not much of a Minecraft player these days, but I'm a massive fan of Sodium and it's related mods from what I've experienced so far. It makes me want to get back into Minecraft a little more. 😁

Seems like Sodium was made by an actual game dev. It's amazing what good quality code can do on a GPU.

Me playing mc with 30 FPS

As someone who uses Sodium on Intel UHD 620 (their integrated chip that they refuse to call integrated): The biggest enhancement it has is for discrete graphics cards, because Minecraft is normally very CPU bottlenecked. As in, its communication with the GPU is very unoptimized. This is the main thing Sodium does better. It sends the commands to the GPU faster so the GPU can draw them faster. Most of this doesn't apply for integrated graphics, because 1. there is no communication necessary as they're literally the same chip and 2. it's too slow to make a difference there anyway. Even then, it still helps a little, but in other ways. It's much like what Optifine used to be around 1.8 (Optifine has focused less on optimization and more on looks recently). I used to be unable to get anything above 30 fps, now in an empty world I can get 120, in a proper busy world it's closer to 50, which is still almost double. It has some glitches with transparent surfaces, but nothing too bad. Also, its rendering speed seems to be almost completely independent of render distance, weirdly enough. Going from 8 chunks to even 32 chunks does make it slower, but much less than you'd expect.

Me: Wait, wait, wait, WHAT?

Right now the only issue I have with this mod is the fact it is missing so many QoL options, that Optifine has due to years of development. For example, Dynamic FoV option, Custom Entities, Connected textures. For me, Sodium works way better than Optifine but I really miss these features mentioned. Is there any way to have them back? Maybe there is a Fabric mod of these or so?

for anyone wondering about what exactly this mod does (and being too lazy to check out the mod page itself), the mod is basically a whole engine overhaul, removing a lot of the no doubt spaghetti code of Notch's early years with engines and a bunch of the overhead added over years of development into a more processable set of instructions. some improvements stated are to the way geometry and vertex are handled, the culling of objects (which is notoriously memory bound in vanilla minecraft due to the garbage collector having runs every other frame), unloading animated sprites while not being looked at, and even some parts of the light and chunks engine. the mod creator also states that it is not really supposed to be a replacement for Optifine, at least in its current state, and many QoL features such as shaders and connected textures are second priority right now. all in all i recommend checking the mod page and even further, the repo to see whats up because i think its a really interesting project.

I use sodium with phosphor and lithium and I can consistently get 1000+ fps while playing, and when i use heavy iris shaders i get ~300fps, which i think is pretty damn good, especially at 1440p

2:37 I'm taking a guess here, but I believe this graphical enhancement is actually a positive sideeffect of how it is improving your fps. It merges the multiple triangles of flat surfaces into 2 triangles (likely per chunk) which means you get quite a significant reduction in the amount of triangles on the screen. The side effect of that is that you can't really render those individual lightlevels like that anymore, unless you pre-render them to a texture. So instead they just opt for normal lighting and a basic shadow implementation, which is much faster on modern hardware.
