I'm from Magnitogorsk and this guy is on a different level for his age. Confidence and calmness are his strengths. At the age of 21, he played the entire playoffs as a starter and won the cup for our city.

Avs totally ready for Nabokov. Avs goalie coach Parkkila is Finnish but played in KHL and is a Russian speaker. Now the Avs AHL team has Pavel Francouz as their goalie coach. He played in the KHL as well, speaks Russian and is very close to Parkilla. Nabokov should be very comfortable in Colorado.

7:18 I can tell you exactly why he fell under the radars of most NHL teams. He’s not the current prototypical giant in net which is what teams look for these days. As an Avs fan, I don’t care about them being huge and since we drafted him, watched quite a bit of video and he is for real. If they hit on this and he can come in and seamlessly replace Georgiev after this season when his contract expires, Avs will be in a really good position. Potentially with two young goalies as Annunen showed flashes this past season that he’s taken the next step in his development and ready to play regularly.

this guy looks solid, and the avs needed him. i wonder if he'll score an NHL goal like the last nabokov did. kinda makes you wonder why he hadn't been picked before. even with a flyer on a 7th. oh well, he'll be on a successful team immediately, like vasy. my habs drafted a russian goalie last year...but it wasn't this guy. yevgeny volokhin looks decent, though. although the guy we think will be our future starter was drafted earlier - jacob fowler at 69 (nice).

So hyped the Avs drafted a goalie moderately high. As a goalie, I hope for it every year and never get it. Happy Annunen actually is turning into a NHL backup after all these years. Would love if they actually get a starter out of this pick.

Learning a lesson from Montreal......never, ever use a first round draft pick on a goaltender and never build your team around one either. Never pay a goaltender more than 6 million a season and never for more than 3 years. Montreal, under Bob Gainey picked Carey Price using a first round pick then built the team around him. The GM turned an offensive minded team into a bunch of pea shooters usually having one of the worst offences in the league. Gainey traded for defensive minded forwards who couldn't score. When your star forward is Saku Koivu who never scored more than 22 goals in a season and only managed 3 twenty goals seasons in a 13 year career with Montreal you are in bad shape. It took Price almost a decade before he cracked a window of light on 1 1/2 amazing seasons as the best in the league but a span that short does not make you a HOF hockey player. Price was streaky at best. He stuck around for 15 years, 5 years longer than any Montreal goalie, not because he had great numbers in those 5 years....he was in the bottom third of the league. Montreal had more than its share of great goaltenders starting with George Vezina, Bill Durnham, Jacques Plante, Gump Worsley, Roggie Vachon, Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy. All of these were consistent in play and didn't let you down in the playoffs. Carey Price's career with Montreal should be any guide for a GM. Yes you need good goaltending, but don't overpay for the position. You can always rent a player for the playoffs.

@@appletile2887 wow that was an awesome write-up. I agree with you, the team needs to be built around more than just a goaltender. Using a first round pick on one is a bit rich for my liking as well. But I believe a second rounder would be well worth it for Nabokov. Usually a 2nd round player is a 50/50 to even make the NHL in the first place.

I don’t think a team should be built around a goalie and agree with a lot of your points but Bobrovsky just won the cup and he has like a 10mill cap hit brotha.

@@BodyofWater_ Do a search on the internet for a guy who has a site call the myth of hockey or of goaltending. (I forget the exact title) This guy has done a great analysis of the goaltending position showing that it is more of the team than the goaltender's talent usually that makes or breaks a goaltender's record. There are some exceptions like anything. But it is crazy to spend 10 million on one goaltender when you need 2 to fill that position. With no cap, hey spend as much as you want but when you spend 1/8 of the total payroll on a goaltender you are hurting the quality of the entire team. Get the second goaltender for 3 million and you have just spent $13 million on 2 players who can't score a goal all season. Bulking up your defence or offence and getting an average goaltender will get you the same result but will reduce the team's overall risk of injury or poor play by the goaltender. Price's contract really hurt the team. I am sure Price was abusing pain killers during the last 5 years he was in the league. He was called "regular season Price". The painkillers he would get are opiates likely hydromorph contin & condone. (They are about 30 times more powerful than morphine) To reduce the pain signal to the brain the drug is designed to slow the signal from the body part to the brain down. It also affects your concentration. A goaltender needs lighting fast reflexes to do hi job and hyper concentration. When Price checked into the player assistance programme articles in the media confirmed it was for drug abuse. Price let in soft goals proving he wasn't concentrating. Remember the saying, don't put your eggs in one basket. You spread your risk over several players instead of concentrating on one player. Look at Toronto and their core 4 who have soaked up too much money making the quality of the rest of the players poorer because they can't afford to pay what better players are worth. It's been 57 years since the Leafs were in the SC finals or won a cup.

Goalie prospects are always a crap shoot so, a second on a 21 year old D+3 who has experience already dominating a league essentially equal to the AHL? Why not take a flyer, considering if it hits you'll save 3-4m on the cap and found your man in the pipes for a while. He'll come to Colorado after next season, so will want to watch this coming KHL year to see if he keeps this up!
