The B39 Bus route is one of the shortest in the city, and to the naked eye, it probably looks like the most useless. In this video, we answer the question of "Why Does The B39 Bus Exist?"

I read an article about the B39 that stated that many seniors and disabled folks who have trouble using the subway use the B39 to cross the bridge. It's more of a utility than a bus route, but it does serve a purpose.

This bus route not only highlights the inequalities that people with disabilities face, but also what everyone on buses face as a result of the negative externalities of drivers in NYC. This route taking 20 minutes when it should take 5 is a really concrete example of why we need congestion pricing so badly.
@taxesv1nce142
@taxesv1nce142 3 ай бұрын
I honestly disagree. Congestion pricing won't help transit or alleviate traffic, all it will do is allow for the wealthy and those who can pay the price to drive around, while the less fortunate, especially those living in isolated areas of the city with limited transit, will be screwed over. If you want to discourage driving, you should just ban it all together, although that would require a massive transit upgrade.

@@taxesv1nce142 If the proceeds of congestion pricing are used to fund transit in isolated areas of the city, though… Honestly, each bridge should have dedicated bus lanes and be tolled. I would also suggest replacing parking on streets with bus route with bus lanes. Let the drivers scream. (I won’t mention my belief that gas should have a 300% tax earmarked for mitigating climate change).

@@taxesv1nce142 Instead of congestion pricing, I agree that all of Manhattan south of 59th Street (not counting those driving on say the FDR Drive and West Side Highway) should have considered banning driving for non commercial drivers on most roads with very few exceptions. And truck deliveries made only between 8pm-7am and 7pm-8am weekends and holidays. Coordiors such as Broadway, 5th Avenue and 1st Avenue could even have 2 way traffic for buses as well. With that said, there was other ways other than following London with congestion pricing first without forcing tolls to enter the “city.”

When the Williamsburg Bridge was closed for summer 1999 due to reconstruction on the subway structure, the B39 was made free for those four months as a lifeline route connecting the severed BMT lines (a shuttle ran between Essex and Broad Street). The Williamsburg Bridge has been fully accessible since the new walkways and bike lanes opened in 2002.

You have a number of long-distance buses converging at the Willie B Plaza, with only one bus acting as a shuttle between the WBP and Manhattan. A few miles north, you have a similar situation at the Queensboro Bridge Plaza, but there, the TA eliminated the shuttle years ago, so many years ago it was a streetcar then, once Roosevelt (then called "Welfare") Island had a bridge built to Long Island City. At QBP, the Q32, Q60 and Q101 buses continue into Manhattan.

@@mmrw Barring a court ruling that permanently ends it, congestion pricing is about to start. And with tens of thousands of more riders going to the Williamsburg Bridge transit lines, I don’t think the “J/M/Z” under its current structure can handle the extra loads. So the B39 even if ADA was installed at Essex- Delancey Station right now, that route should still be a permanent bus route with increased frequency at least on Weekdays. Ditto for Downtown Brooklyn/Northwest Brooklyn Ie Park Slope, Caroll Gardens following the path of the old B51 should also return.

I never quite paid attention to how fast the B39 really makes the trip on a good day. Just 5 minutes one way? Looks like it should be able to run every 15 minutes with one bus/driver, and maybe at this frequency it would have higher ridership. Instead it runs every 30 minutes because of congestion, which is really bad. It only takes 20 minutes to walk the bridge. I don't think I'd enjoy having to rely on this route.

Actually the B51 ran between City Hall/Chambers and the Jay/Fulton Street-MetroTech “A/C” “F” and “R” subway station. With congestion pricing soon arriving, the MTA needs to bring back some form of “non premium express bus” service between Northwest/Downtown Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan at least Monday to Friday. The subways unless they get a dramatic boost in service frequency are not ready for the additional riders that will no longer use their vehicles 🚗 for Brooklyn-Manhattan or beyond travel.

I think when the accessibility is complete I think that the B39 should be replaced by an extended B67 absorbing the B39 as a whole. It would have the same purpose but I had plans to extend the B67 even further along 15th Ave and having the B16 run along 12th Ave to avoid the traffic on 13th and 14th Aves up to 60th St. I even have some Brooklyn bus routes that could even touch Staten Island in the Future those being B1 B16 B70 That alone would be enough for one inner Brooklyn Riders get a one seat ride for transfers to buses such as the S78, and the others to the Ferry Terminal. This can allow the B8 to run along 86th St and then the only Staten Island bus to access Brooklyn would be the S79 SBS with an extension up to 59th St Station for transfers to the N and R lines as well as the B9 and B64 Buses. I would also have more than one depot supply buses as they would need enough buses to supply the demand as buses such as the B1 can replace the S53 and the B16 can replace the S93 LTD. As for the B70 that can run Along Father C. Blvd up to the SI University Hospital in Seaview Ave. With that we have B1: Port Richmond B16: Willowbrook College of Staten Island B70: SI University Hospital Other cities have had long bus routes as that can help NYC as well, and seeing that the S78 is a long route at over 20 miles long it shouldn’t be a problem.

The B39 is very useful and convenient to the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza, however it should not be eliminated since if there’s no J/M service between Hewes Street and Essex, The B39 is quite convenient besides the shuttle bus. It should also be extended to Myrtle Ave-Broadway station

MTAFAN if the MTA Brooklyn Bus redesign now scheduled to start around Spring or Summer of ‘25 is approved a new “B53” will run 24/7 between Williamsburg Plaza and Broadway Junction. With limited service extended to Greenpoint Ave/46th Street “7” subway line in Sunnyside, Queens. The “B46” Williamsburg-Kings Plaza Via Utica Local would be shortened to/from Flushing Ave. And the Q24 would only run between Broadway Junction and Jamaica.

I rather the B39 opposed to the J train only downside is that it takes long to arrive (like 5 J or M trains passing by 😞) I also think it should extend a little pass Allen Street.

This is the only bus route that should be "FARE FREE" for good! With only two stops between the routes, I dont see a reason (or an excuse) for fares to be collected.

The MTA had cut alot of Bus service along the B-39 route. That's one of reasons why the route had lost ridership. It use run 24 for a day and it use to run like 12 to 15 minutes all day day until the late hours. Now it runs every 30 from 7 am to 930 pm 7 days a week. Until 2010 when the MTA decided to cut . By only have the B-39 running one Bus is a joke so what happens when the Bus breaks down then it's no Bus service. The ADA had sued the MTA for cutting the B-39 the route should've Extended to follow the B-60 to end and Union ave by Broadway G train station. Making connections to B--46 B-60 and walk connections to B-48 and the J/M trains or just Extended up Metropolitan ave and Lorimer st G L and B-24 Q-59. Under the Queens Bus Redesign the Q-59 will no long serv Williamsburg Northside any more. The outer section of Williamsburg by the Movie theater and by Kent ave sirThe B-53 isn't going be enough to handle the amount of Bus passengers. Also. The B-62 will'nt be going to Williamsburg Bridge 🌉 plaza once the Queens Bus Redesign actually has sir. The Q-59 would've rerouted to Broadway and Rondey street to Grand st and to Queens. Leaving alot Bus passengers with not to much service. Also the B-62 will rerouted like the original B-61. And the Bus passengers will have to walk up to 5 to 10 minutes from Bedford ave and Broadway to Williamsburg Bridge Plaza. There alot of Traffic 🚥 coming off of the Williamsburg Bridge. Sir.

I think that the B39 should be discontinued, with the route being replaced by the B71, connecting Cobble Hill and Crown Heights, which should operate under the Grand Avenue Bus Depot, if the B39 ever gets discontinued in the near future.

Thank you for sharing this video. 2 weeks ago, I had mentioned basic facts about the B39 route which I lasted rode in the summer of 2020. It was also reminiscent to the B51 route that was discontinued in 2010, across the Manhattan Bridge. Here is the review of the Grand Avenue Depot review, which can show the analysis of this route I wish I can add on before I released the review. Is the B42 and B39 really shorter Then the B74? I always thought that was the shortest bus route I’m born and raised in Coney Island but now I live in Williamsburg and the B39 seems longer the B74 only goes from stillwell Avenue to west 37th are you sure ? Anyway learn something new every day

Once Essex & Delancey gets ADA Compliance… the B39 is FINISHED‼️ it’s really for those who need the access
@americangiant1003
@americangiant1003 3 ай бұрын
Agreed Dribbz. Although even with Essex/Delancey getting ADA access, with congestion pricing coming the B39 should remain minimum a Monday to Friday route. Especially I don’t think the “J/M/Z” lines can handle the projected tens of thousands more riders a day from soon to be former Drivers of their vehicles on the Williamsburg Bridge.

@@americangiant1003 CBTC…. the J.M.Z will be fine with the headways…. The Z barely runs so it’s really the J & M… the Williamsburg can handle it now as it is… and with CBTC it will be fine

@@CLBT7437 Further proof the B39 needs to stay once congestion pricing starts. Also time for a Weekday Downtown Brooklyn/Park Slope area and Lower Manhattan “old B51” type bus route as well once the tolls to Manhattan starts.
