Avonlea and Joe’s house is one of the first rebuilds started in Paradise. They are starting to think about finishing touches. Instead of a fireplace, they’ve decided to go with a wood stove. Joe, who works with stone for a living, is fabricating a stone hearth in his shop.
Kevin gets a tour of the house from Avonlea before visiting Joe’s shop where the work happens. They return to the house with the hearth and lay it out in the corner.
Richard visits a house under construction where the sprinkler system is being installed. Rick Fox explains how the systems are designed according to code and shows the different types of sprinkler heads. Each head has an 8-foot spray diameter, and he installs them in all rooms except for small closets. Richard gears up in his raincoat and hat for a heat test to demonstrate how a sprinkler head is released.
One year after the Camp Fire that burned Paradise, California struggles with new wildfires. One tool the state uses to study these blazes is a simulator that recreates the spread of the fire on a table with a projected map. Garrett Sjolund points out to Kevin where the fire started in Pulga and how it spread through Paradise within a couple of hours.
In a wildfire, embers are the enemy of houses. A new ordinance in Paradise is designed to starve embers of fuel around houses. Jenn explains the codes, which are divided into two zones that dictate distance of trees and shrubs from flammable items. Then she meets landscaper Derek Onstein at Luke and Crystal’s house, who is spacing new shrubs and trees apart and keeping them away from the house. Instead of bark mulch he uses rock mulch up against the house. Even with the safety codes, the landscape will look great.
Vent expert Brandon Powers shows Tom how a fire and ember safe vent works versus a traditional vent by lighting a fire in a simulated attic. The fire safe vent closes off at a certain temperature to prevent embers and flames from coming into the attic. Contractor Bret Wayland installs them not only in the soffit, but also around the foundation of a new house before it gets a coat of stucco
Kevin arrives to the site of Jose and Anna’s home as the new foundation is being poured. Jose describes the old house that they were in for almost 15 years. The new house will have a more open kitchen concept, which they’ve planned with their builder. They’re enthusiastic to see it all get started.

Maybe the expense? I'm not sure. I'm an American but I live in the Southeast where there aren't many wildfires ever. I mean, what yall have mentioned makes perfect sense. Or even making homes out of mud (adobo I think is what it is called) to cut down on the fire hazard, as well as help keep it cool and warm. And besides, it would be cheap because it's literally just dirt built over a mold. I'm not a building engineer so apparently I don't know anything about building, but seeing homes and towns devastated by wildfires she makes you wonder, don't it?

I find great joy in watching people rebuild their houses directly in the path of the exact natural disasters that destroyed their last ones. This is like when a person spends millions to move their house back 100’ from the crumbling California coast or rebuilds their home on the banks of the same river that washed their last house away. Such stupidity.

@@realestateservicessaleshea99 Controlled burns and other forest management would indeed keep the fires from spreading like they do. The states ran by the right fund and allow controlled burns and forest management. Notice the states ran by the right don't burn 3/4 of the way down from either forest fires or "protests" like the left ran states do. The corrupt left packs their pockets with our tax dollars so there is no money for taking care of our communities. Just like the toll roads. Any toll road you go down in a left ran city are terrible, full of pot holes and rough as a rutted up dirt road. The states ran by the right have nice roads and most of them don't have tolls. I was there and was born in this area. Most of the houses burned because windows burst and embers entered the house or the embers came in the attic vents and started the fire from the inside out. This happened on buildings even made of concrete, metal, cinder block, etc. We even had whole normal sized grocery store with plenty of asphalt around it and made of cinder block burn. Sprinklers pre date the idiot governor and were law back in 2011. They won't do anything in a major fire like this but do help a single home on fire causing a major fire. They just had a older house not far out of the burn scar catch fire and started a wild fire by it. Luckily the fire dept was able to knock it down fast but sprinklers would have helped it not spread to outside. Lesson learned from the humboldt/butte complex fires of 2008 when paradise was almost burned over then. The rake comment trump made is because California stopped doing control burns just like they also choked out logging to the point it was all over grown. The state made it a pain in the butt to keep lots even in 1990s level of fire protection and they didn't care because they didn't want to kill any trees. Their stupidity also caused the bark beetles to explode which they slowly choke trees to death and move on to the next and they don't even need to fly since everything was touching and over grown.

They also said to have a meaningful effect they would need to do 1 million acres of prescribed burns a year but there are tons of things that stop this from happening from manpower, to risk, all the way to wildlife threat and most importantly budget is mostly spent on saving lives.
