HB receives an Omega Seamaster Polaris Titane in terrible condition for a full service watch restoration
Omega Cal 1109 (ETA 2892A2) Ref: 3680885
I was shocked to see how it looked inside after being sold from an auction house claiming it was ok.

Sorry to hear about your kitty. I have had the same experience in the past with my kitties, such a painful experience to deal with. Current kitty is 22yrs old this summer and still spry. Belonged to my neighbours wife, when she passed the cat just moved in to my place, which he was used to, as he had been coming to my house since he was a kitten. May the memories of your cat give you peace. Great video and restoration as always. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & craftsmanship.

I watched this last night and have been thinking how to respond. I really feel for you. I can hear the difference in your voice. I was wondering why we haven't gotten a post for a while, and I'm very sorry to hear the news. I know many people wouldn't understand the bonding a man can have with his pet, or the emotions that follow such a loss. The uncanny thing is the similarities we've experienced over the last month. Three weeks ago Friday my father in law went in for a surgery that was supposed to be no big deal. After the surgery, in recovery, he suffered a stroke. They performed another surgery for the stroke, and he didn't recover. He passed that Monday. I have 2 cats, 16 years old, brother and sister, that have been with me since birth. They were born in my house to my daughter's cat, and these two were something special. The daughter has long-since moved out, byt the cats remain. One is having some digestive tract issues, and for the last few days has been bleeding. I'm bringing her back to the vet today, hoping they can stop the bleeding. Thank you for being open and sharing your situation. It's comforting to know that even though we're across the pond and don't really know each other, like our shared passion, we also aren't alone in our difficult experiences. Stay strong, brother. 🤝 Oh, and beautiful job on the watch! You make the difficult things look easy and your presentation always gives me a boost of confidence to keep learning and working on these miniature mechanical marvels.

Another great video, thank you! You can remove rust from a hairspring with a dilute solution of citric acid in water. Rinse in IPA afterwards and dry. This will also remove any heat bluing on the spring, but I guess that’s better than having a rusty spring. The problem with rusty hairsprings, whether you remove the rust or not, is the tiniest spots of rust can have a huge impact upon the rate of the watch. The strength of a hairspring is proportional to the cube of the thickness, so a tiny reduction in thickness where a speck of rust exists has a much bigger effect on the strength of the spring than you would expect. For this reason, rusted hairsprings should always be replaced. If a replacement is impossible, you can shorten the spring by repinning it at the stud to compensate for the loss of strength, but this changes the position of the pinning point relative to the point where the hairspring exists the collet at the centre, which throws positional rates off badly…and it becomes a case of having a watch that ticks but will never keep time at anything approaching factory specs. Sometimes a cheaper alternative to replacing wheels with mushroomed pivots (especially for movements where parts are very expensive) is to reduce and burnish the pivots on the Jacot tool. Use the pivot file end of your burnisher to fix the mushroom shape, then burnish it to smooth and harden. Measure the now finer pivot and order a new jewel to put into the watch. Some pivots are too mushroomed to use this approach, but it is often a viable alternative to replacing the wheel. I’ve seen how laser welding can be used to carefully build up new metal where it is needed. I haven’t tried this yet, but I suspect a mushroomed pivot could be filled this way and then brought to being perfectly round and polished smooth on the Jacot tool. Given you managed to source the NOS movements and rotor parts, that was a great way to go, but for future watches, the above may prove useful. I can tell by the knowledge and skill you demonstrate in your content that you might often be aware of the stuff I’m explaining in the comments. Please realise that I write comments on KZfaq both for the content creator and those who might be learning about watchmaking from KZfaq who may read the comments section. My heartfelt condolences for the loss of your cat. As an animal lover myself, cats in particular, I realise how much a part of the family and household they become. Especially after 18 years. I hope that the pain and grief will soon pass, so you can focus on remembering all the great memories you made together over the last 18 years.

Hi Mat. I am sorry for your family problems and wish you all the very best. This is an excellent video and thank you for doing these videos. I am a cat person and I had a beautiful cat for 18 years. My sincere condolences for the loss of Furman. Take comfort in knowing that you gave him the best life possible. I've never seen that model of Omega before. Lol, I am learning and did a capstone yesterday. I flipped the capstone holder onto the oiled jewel, pressed it down to seat it as the first time I did this it did not seat. As a result originally when I installed the part sat too high in the setting and I couldnt close the shock spring without it stopping the balance. Well after I cleaned the jewel again and when I went to press the jewel back into the capstone holder it went flying away. I heard it but did not find it. Luckily I had 3 spare movements for parts.

It's funny because as I was reading this I knew what had happened before I read it lol. It happens to the best of us. One tip is to really hold your tweezers very loose when you are dealing with the capstones. If it slips it won't ping as far as you haven't boosted it with tension from the tweezer grip.

Brilliant repair and restoration. One observation I have is that although the dial has lume, the hands don't, so you'd never be able to read the time in the dark. The dial certainly looks much better with the lume. Perfectly applied!! Do you think that the watch may originally have had different hands? Love your videos, especially your honesty! Keep up the good work!! Tony (UK)

Great repair Matt and a fortuitous find on the movement from eBay. You mentioned having to use an original wheel as the one with the new movement was different enough so it wouldn’t fit. Wondering if that was an Omega embellishment or an ETA production change ? As always, great video and commentary and look forward to your next one. Hello there and thank you for the video. I am no professional but: consider the two finest grades of EVE FLEX rubber abrasives, hand-held (not in a power tool), instead of fiber brush if you haven't tried that already; they sometimes do *magic* with minimal collateral damage, and rust / water deposits on plated parts could be such a case. And, sorry to hear about your cat; I am no cat person myself but I had pet rats who passed away (put to sleep, cancer) some 20 years ago, after I had them for 2-3 years (their normal life span), and that is still a sad memory. Very best regards.

Hey nice video, but you made a mistake, on these ETA movements the "cannon pinion" is not the wheel you oiled at 14:50 but the minutes wheel you installed at 20:28. You can install it upside down to lubricate it from the underside. Other than that nice Video, hope you are having a wonderfull weekend.
@HorologyBiology
@HorologyBiology 4 ай бұрын
I actually just looked into this and you are absolutely right. As the canon pinion was not friction fit whatsoever I assumed the extra bulk on the third wheel was the driven canon pinion like on a few ETAS. This obviously eluded me lol Thanks for watching

I would be interested in seeing if a fella couldn’t get away with using a non toxic rust remover like evaporust to clean parts and neutralize rust hmm. Also good sir you need not be afraid to polish a watch. A small bench grinder and the appropriate compound, and not too much pressure, and you would bring the shine back to a lot of watches. I promise it’s really not that hard to do. Speaking of watches well a clock in this case (same principle), I just wound my lovely 8 day “Karl Lauffer” wall clock from 1918! So I can listen to it tic away as I watch the video! Don’t worry it’s super fresh, and was serviced by an elderly watch / clock maker about 3 years ago. It is a fantastic looking movement.

I did have a pop with some rust remover but many parts were quite deeply penetrated. I agree with you about the buffing on the mop, I do this but won't remove normal scratches as I like to keep the character of the original watch. Nice to bring a shine back to them though and the gold popped through nicely on this one. Thanks for watching

Great video. Good decision to get a nos movement! Were you able to use the new main plate or did you have to use the old due to serial number?
@HorologyBiology
@HorologyBiology 4 ай бұрын
Yes the new mainplate was used as the serials are on the auto bridge and the barrel bridge only.

I have a question. I watch several channels on here that feature watch repair and Fixadot is used by many. It seems to be common practice to use it on the pallet fork and then immediately clean it off the pivots. My question is why? If the purpose for using it on the jewels is to help hold the oil so it doesn't migrate away, wouldn't it be more logical to leave it on the pivots to keep the oil on them and keep them lubricated?
@HorologyBiology
@HorologyBiology 4 ай бұрын
That’s a valid question. The reason it is removed from the pivots is that it can cause potential drag which would result in a lower amplitude. On the vast majority of mechanics watches you never oil the pallet forks pivots at all so there is no oiling in the first place 👍🏻

Hi HB As you know caught up with you privately regarding Furman (great name BTW!) On a more lighthearted note do I get the 🏆 for being the most observant subscriber by noticing that you played “The Tray Game” in your excellent video today. What item on HB’s workspace disappears and reappears as something else during the video? I’ll come back later and check if anyone has got the correct answer!

Looks like this watch had a history of salt water use and has never been cleaned or serviced by the original owner. Seals do not last forever especially if used in a harsh environment.

Worst looking Seamaster ever. I am so sad about your fur Baby. My Q lived to be 17 years old. He was a North American tabby. I had him since he was 8 weeks old. I had to do the same thing. I was so heartbroken. Please know all pets go to heaven and you gave him a great life. They are in our lives to show us unconditional love.

That's a really nice restoration, particularly the lume. I repaired my Seiko's busted rotor a couple of weeks back, my wife didn't catch on that I'd doneit and bought me a new watch. A festina quartz chronometer, and frankly I'm enormously disappointed. Basically zero lume, it's invisible at night, the chrono seconds hand is really clunky, advancing once a second, compared to my cheap Seiko. I initially thought the chrono hand was misplaced, as it runs between the second marks on the dial, but it turns out that only holds for the first 30 seconds or so - on the second 30, it ties up to teh tick marks exactly. For a watch that cost 3 times what my Seiko cost, it feels horribly cheap. Oh, and it loses time. A quartz watch that loses time. FFS.
