Also, just to add, you can use any arpeggio from the key you are in over that chord. So if you're in D Major then you can use the Em7, F#m7, GMaj7, A7, Bm7 and C#m7(b5) arpeggio too. These will target different groups of extensions over that chord, (e.g. using the Em7 arpeggio over the D chord will give you the 9th, 11th, 13th and root). If you try this on other chords in the key, you'll find that you'll get different sets of intervals that highlight cool sounds. For example, if you take chord IV in D, which is G major then you can use any of these arpeggios that are available in D major again and they will now react differently to this chord. So if you use F#m7 over this you now get the 7th, 9th, #11, 13th, which is now more of that Lydian sound that chord IV is known for in a major key. You can also potentially use pentatonics too

Came here to say something similar but you said everything so well there's nothing else to add!
@joegriffithsmusicАй бұрын
@@shieldsjon Yeah is a useful way of thinking about it, as long as the notes are in that key, you can use any sort of voicing, chord from that scale ect...

Yeah but i still need to figure out that jazzy rhythm 😭 (im new to jazz guitar)

Great trick, you can also do this on the sixth degree! In this instance thinking Bm minor or pentatonic would also work great. Really nice short, actually useful, clear and straight to point. Cherrs!

Relativity...try doing it in dissonant ways as well when you wanna be disgusting. The phrygian of the 6 chord, the half whole of the minor 3rd...any combo makes you make a jazz noise here

Why not just say D9 instead of f#min7 /D I’m not seeing the difference here (I’m new)
@thebillis83272 ай бұрын
Is a D9 arpeggio not a thing or something?
@GA-eq3zx2 ай бұрын
The note d isn’t a part of the arpeggio he’s playing. If you were to play f#m7 with d in the bass it could function as a dmaj7add9, the reason he showed this is because the 3 chord is a common substitute for the 1 chord in jazz and highlights the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th of d. Gives you more mileage out of already familiar patterns
@michaelfavata27202 ай бұрын
In some ways you're right it's a minor conceptual difference. One implication is that it may be a good idea to avoid playing the root when soloing. A D9 does include the root while F#m7 does not include a D. The conceptual difference may make it easier too. Seventh chords are just slightly easier to grok and get your fingers around than ninth chords.
