Have you ever wondered how a single play can have a huge impact on the careers of some of the greatest football legends? In this video, we will explore how a fumble caused by John Lynch in 2005 led to Drew Brees’ shoulder injury, which in turn set off a chain of events that made him a legend in New Orleans and Nick Saban the GOAT college coach.
We will look at the details of the fumble, the surgery that Brees underwent, the decision that the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers made about his future, and the opportunity that the New Orleans Saints gave him. We will also examine how Nick Saban, who was the head coach of the Dolphins at the time, missed out on signing Brees and how that affected his return to college football, where he built a dynasty at Alabama.

I'm glad you added in the part where the only reason Brees never made it to Miami was the doctors failed his physical. ESPN and all them only say Miami chose Culpeper over Brees. And that was absolutely not the case. Saban has said they had the contract ready and everything agreed on. I hate miamis doctor's still to this day.

The dolphins have been jinxed since Shula was forced to retire, haven't had a playoff win in 25 yrs, ( longest active streak), and have not made a afc championship in over 30 yrs,

The Dolphins should be considered one of the most prestigious NFL franchises. The only one with an undefeated season w/ SB win, having revolutionized the game with of the best QBs ever in Marino, etc. Yet the mistakes in management and drafts have reduced them to a bottom feeder franchise :(

I think their accomplishments from the Don Shula era is what kept people from noticing just how badly run the franchise has been since Marino retired.

I disagree about the Brees/Rivers thing at the end. If Brees doesn't get hurt, the Chargers would have resigned him and try to move Philip for picks. Rivers was great, but that 2006 team was built to win right away. They probably would have fared better with a more experienced QB.

I thought Chargers GM AJ Smith really wanted Rivers starting & Marty gone. To Smith’s credit he didn’t whine when fired. He said he had it coming for the team not winning enough. Norv Turner is a great OC but has had bad results as HC.

@@jayoh2527 Payton only offered a 3rd round pick for Romo & Jerry Jones wanted a 2nd so the trade never happened. If Payton knew Romo was really good then he would’ve gladly given a 2nd to get a QB who knew Payton’s offense. In other words neither Payton nor Jones knew what they had in Romo yet & Payton blew it by not offering a second so it’s difficult to picture Romo becoming the good regular season QB who never won anything if he becomes a Saint let alone a Super Bowl winning QB. Maybe Romo doesn’t thrive in New Orleans. We don’t know. But Payton got to one Super Bowl with the Bounty Bowl defense that was brutal. He should’ve seen a second Super Bowl when beat in the NFC title game by the 2018 Rams on the “no call” DPI. But 2010-2016 the Saints either got beat in Wildcard, Divisional or didn’t qualify for the playoffs. IMHO those seasons made Payton an even better HC (although he was suspended for 2012). But he never got back to a SB & he wasn’t getting to one with Romo whom he valued as a third round QB. If Payton got Romo he still probably signs Brees because if he wanted Romo to start then he’d have gladly given a second or even first to get his starting QB. Jerry Jones holding out for a second round for Romo probably saved his career. 😀

There's another team that was in the hunt for a QB in 2006: The Denver Broncos. They had made the AFC Championship Game with Jake Plummer but wanted to upgrade at QB, so they traded up and drafted Jay Cutler in the 2006 draft. The Broncos had a stacked roster and signing Drew Brees would have made them a contender for years to come. Mike Shanahan likely wouldn't have gotten fired after the 2008 season, which makes it unlikely that he would've become the Redskins head coach in 2010. And this is where the "What if" gets even wilder: If Mike Shanahan's career trajectory is different, so is the timeline for his assistents that he had in Washington, including Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Mike McDaniel, Bobby Slowik and Raheem Morris. In other words, the face of the league would be completely different today.

I was in the stands that day in San Diego. It was New Year's Eve. It was raining like heck, and knew immediately Brees was hurt bad. BTW, Lynch made the play, but Gerard Warren (#61) came over the top and landed all 325+ lbs on his shoulder. I'm just surprised Brees wasn't in more pain, and it's a miracle he recovered so well.

Great video. From editing to voice over. These type of videos make me pull out the ps2 and do franchise mode on the old Maddens. Nick Sabin is in Madden 07, btw, if anyone is interested. They could’ve gotten at least one with a Nick Sabin/Drew Brees combo. Im thinking 2008 to 2010 around that time frame. Once the patriots and broncos got rolling there was really no stopping them from Players to personnel. Bill has always been a little more endearing to his players, behind the curtains that Sabin, while Sabin isn’t as Machiavellian but certainly more brute than Belicheck.

I’m from LA and lived through Katrina. For the record, Katrina was a direct hit on the Mississippi coast and hit New Orleans as a Category 3. The issue wasn’t the hurricane itself, it wasn’t that bad. The issue was the city/state didn’t shore up the levies properly and they broke.

Marty Schottenheimer is just as much to blame/credit as Lynch. As was mentioned, the Chargers were already eliminated from the playoffs. The GM felt that Rivers should start that game so they could better evaluate which QB they should keep. But Schottenheimer stood to gain $1m in his contract if the Chargers hit ten wins, so he started the veteran.

I am not sure this was a mistake. Brees went to New Orleans and won a Super Bowl ... Yes. But there is absolutely no reason to believe the Chargers would win a Super Bowl had he stayed. And while that Super Bowl in New Orleans may not have happened without Brees, it isn't like he won five or six there. And as for Saban, I am not sure he would have stuck around whether they got Brees or not. He preferred college and proved that is where he belonged.

I disagree Brees becomes a Dolphin if he doesn't get injured. If Brees doesn't get injured, more teams would be interested in him as a free agent and at that point, it's anybody's guess who he would ultimately sign with.

incorrect. wasnt John Lynch that hit Brees. he only caused the fumble that Brees tried to recover and was subsequently hit in the shoulder by #61 Gerard Warren.

Brees isn't diving for the ball if Lynch hadn't knocked the ball out of his hands in the first place plus making Lynch the main player in his injury makes for a more compelling story than a forgotten draft bust.

I was a dolphins fan, and following this closely at the time. Nick can spin it all he wants; he was the singular reason that they didn’t get Brees. And to the butterfly effect, getting Brees wouldn’t have changed Saban leaving. He was unhappy with being in Miami and would probably have left anyway. And it seems likely Brees wouldn’t have had the level of success he had in New Orleans in any case - it’s all about how Saban ran the team; his success would probably have been like culpeppers. To the fans that still feel this was a big deal, I would argue that hiring Saban in the first place set the team back a large number of years and was really the defining moment.

It's unlikely Brees would have led Miami to a Super Bowl because Dolphins' ownership does not treat the team as championship potential. More likely, he would have been in Miami for one season and then traded off to somewhere else, whether it be New Orleans or some other team, and finished with a mediocre career.

Saying the Dolphins would’ve won a Super Bowl with Brees and Saban is bullshit considering the only 1 Super Bowl the saints won was because they cheated.

Saban with Brees would of been best thing Miami could of done. Saban would of got us to a SB or more

Not really, he took over a shit show team ( 4-12) then won 9 gms, then he won 6, but lost their qb ,most of the season ( Culpepper), if he stayed, would have built a winner,

@brando7266 What was his record as an NFL coach?: 15 - 17. He was there for only two seasons, plus forcefully and angrily denied (aka flatly lied) that he was leaving... In his last season yhere the record was 6 - 10.

Saban was a great coach. It takes a few years to build a championship team and especially Miami.

That made twice the Dolphins passed on Drew as they could have drafted him but went with some CB that never made a name for himself in the league. Then again in this instance.
