I own both brands. I have owned a Royal Oak Offshore with rubber strap for several decades; it has been on some rugged fishing trips that would be totally inappropriate for the Pateks and has been relatively hassle free. I have caught some amazing fish wearing it and I like the look. On the other hand, the Pateks look great with a suit or jeans and the Pateks keep amazing time. They are little marvels of engineering and art. I am lucky in that I have been collecting most of my adult life and have been able to make some good trades and take advantage of markets where the dollar was strong vs the pound. As a result, I have owned a number of nice watches but have it distilled down to my final six: 3 Pateks, a Royal Oak Offshore, a Rolex Sub (because it was the first nice watch I owned and still looks cool to me) and a Ulysses Nardin Diver just because I liked the look, got a great deal on it in the islands and have been on some great dives wearing it. My collection is geared towards my needs. I do fishing trips in remote areas and used to go diving. As such, half of the collection is suitable for diving or very wet rough conditions. The Pateks are all leather banded dress watches totally unsuitable for my fishing trips but they serve a role the other 3 watches don’t fulfill. These final 6 watches uniquely fit my own personal needs and tastes and likely would not be in anyone else’s final collection. I understand that you can tell time as accurately, if not more, with a quartz timex for a lot cheaper -but it has been a hobby I have enjoyed for over 40 years and the watches and the craftsmanship they represent gives me the same pleasure that a sports car, painting or great guitar might give to someone else. If you enjoy this hobby (or passion) my advice is to look around, trade around (if you can find a reputable dealer) and try a variety of brands until you find the watch or watches that you know are keepers (and you will know). For me, the search for the next great watch or cool trade was a big part of the enjoyment. Once you have those special timepieces, hold on to them for dear life. They will be like old friends that remind you of the places you have seen and the old friends that have shared your adventures. Finally, they will be heirlooms that your children and grandchildren can enjoy. It is a cool hobby. I enjoy these comparison videos but can assure anyone that you would not go wrong with either an Audemars Piguet or a Patek Philippe or a number of others brands produced by great watchmakers. Hope the hobby is as much fun for you as it has been for me.

I saw worn AP, it lost all of its attraction, no more perfect polish-brushed transitions, PP has internal value that is forever. No contest to me.

People have lost jobs, small businesses have closed etc. How come then the sales of luxury watches have gone up in these turbulent times? What drives the sales?

Definitely the Patek for me. I don't like the Royal Oak design at all.

For esthetic reasons alone personally I wouldn't give the patek a second look. You have a beautiful piece in the AP. Other people's opinions shouldn't matter its your choice.

I'm more of a sport watch guy, but like Bruce said - buy what YOU want/like and the one that fits your lifestyle.

I love the great format Bruce and the honesty with this is an opinion not an instruction. A point of view only. It's great that a collector in the hobby can garner feedback from not only the channel but the comments as well. As for my opinion, I'd like both (I can't afford or justify both) but if I had to choose I'd keep the Royal Oak. Apart from the cost and value retention these are totally different watches so I agree it boils down to the use of the watch and maybe not quite so much the aesthetic. I hope we find out what the final decision is.

I just don't get GG's 70s designs, just fugly imho - I wouldn't look twice at the Patek tbh, but certainly much nicer than the AP.... For that money, no brainer it'd be an ALS or Omega Tourbillon 😉... But I'm a luddite 😂 Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

Patek Philippe complication watches are the best at gaining value over long periods of time… Both are amazing pieces and parting with 15500 is a big decision… Why not a VC overseas world timer?

I would keep the RO over the Patek, but I might go with another option. Option 3: Sell the RO and get a Lange1.

Don’t be crazy and don’t sell the AP, you are selling AP which will go up in price and hard to find to buy the worst Patek watch. Don’t do it, Bruce stop this guy making the mistake of his life.

I really really dig that AP! But I actually prefer that VC Overseas above the others. But there're no choices here that aren't transcendent. I couldn't make a decision without regret.

I've actually been selling more peices during the pandemic. People are still working , but from home. They're bored and have spare time and money. I've been surprised how fast I can sell a high-end luxury watch . Amazing market.

You could not pay me to wear a Royal Oak. That and the Nautilus both look like cheap props from a bad 70s "B" scifi movie. As well as I have no idea how AP is in this mythical Holy Trinity of watch making because they are a one trick pony. They make the Royal Oak and pretty much that's it. So obviously my worthless opinion is buy the Patek.

These two are very different from each other in every way. If you can try to get both in your collection.

Personally, I'd keep the 15500. The Patek is beautiful and arguably a "nicer" watch but it's not for me.

That Patek is other-worldly. Awesome swap.

I don't like either watch personally, but if I had to choose between the two, I would go with the AP. That particular PP doesn't look great to me. Too busy of a dial.

I prefer Patek to AP. Always have. I'm not a fan of the Royal Oak. I love the Patek complications, craftsmanship and design. If I won the lottery, I'd buy a six figure Patek.

I would flip it for Any of the 57xx pateks, just not that one.

Brand wise i would go for Patek Calatrava instead of world timer. But yeah, no feelings for AP.

Bruce, do a comparison of 2 affordable options of these extremely highend grail watches.... compare the FC Highlife and ML Aikon..... this would be attainable! I agree these are 2 grail watches....I would choose the AP RO over patek. Agree us collectors only need to answer to ourselves...no one else.

I like better your G-Shock, these ultra expensive watches are too delicate for me, so many amazing watches for less and I´d rather go for a Rolex Yachmaster white gold 42. But between AP & PP no questions about it PP of course!

I'd be worried about either of these watches being passed down to the next generation, unless they can seriously appreciate what they are getting and are also watch nuts.... as opposed to a Porsche for example which will kind of speak for itself in any language lol.

Though I am not a huge fan of this 15500, I definitely won't change to 5930.

That patek is my grail!

Even if I had the cash and was prepared to spend it on that Patek I would dread the day it started playing up.The service costs must be eye watering?
