I appreciate the fact someone has put together something like this for newbies who may feel overwhelmed, but I think for the rest of us backpackers, part of the fun of backpacking is hand-picking out all of our gear and putting together our kits ourselves.

Hmm I just started backpacking this year and I can honestly say it was kinda frustrating. I still have a crappy pack I paid 200 bucks for. Starting out with some kinda good things w/o having to do research and getting to enjoy backpacking. Then if it suits you start adding new gear. My pack is still super heavy and I’m not 100% if it’s still for me. I’m still trying to get use to camping solo in backcountry. Bumps in might get me.

The only thing that's good about this 'Near Zero' company is the fact they understand the value of a clamshell-opening backpack over and above these top-loading backpacks that are IMPOSSIBLE to fill up evenly in a way that gives you access to what you want when you want it throughout the day. The contents they've chosen for their bundles are straight-up private 'Near Zero' labelled AliExpress junk other than a select few brand-name items such as Sawyer etc. It's less than $1,000 USD worth of stuff being sold for $2,000 USD... You're basically paying over $1k USD for the convenience of it all arriving at the same time in a single package in the mail.

Just did my first solo trip and was really happy I went. Did under 7 miles in 3 days but I don't care, at least I got out there. Got my total pack weight under 22lbs with a camera. Most expensive item was the Big Agnes Rapide at $300. Pack was on sale for $179, 1.5lb tent off Amazon for $144, I had an old down mummy bag I made into a quilt, and I spent about $300 on other gear (all cnd prices) that I really researched and wanted. @@dawnsteisslinger353

This is a great concept. Especially for new folks looking to get into it. Like you said it eliminates them having to first figuring out what they need then figuring out where to get it all and finally ordering it all separately. Great video. 👍

So glad a bigger KZfaqr did a review of Near Zero. I love supporting cottage companies, and Near Zero is doing it right. They make lightweight gear for an affordable price, and seems like they are open to feedback to make the product even better. I actually bought Near Zero's 2P Tent and love it, I think Dan undersold it a little.

I love the idea and I appreciate that the company is willing to make upgrades and changes to make their consumers happy. Just because of that reason I will definitely be looking into it. I guess I wasn’t quite expecting the price tag… personally- I far prefer new backpackers do it on a budget and then upgrade as the need allows. A mid quality pack is 150 and entry level sleeping bag is 120. Insulated Pad can be had for 70… now you are comfortable and safe. The rest is just details… this is the reason I did a video about backpacking for $100. I do understand the convenience portion but i guess I don’t hang with circles that say “I want to try backpacking, here’s $1200”

I was actually expecting a higher price tag. First of all, I would recommend a completely new backpacker on a budget who isn't sure of backpacking to borrow or hire whatever he can, as this enables you to discover backpacking. Then if you like it and want to get your own gear, it becomes difficult, for every item you need to decide do I invest more in what I think is higher quality or can I go for the cheapest option? This can save quite some money as you show, but for a new backpacker, how do you know if you need a mid quality pack and if an entry level sleeping bag is sufficient and if you need to invest more in the insulated Pad or your cooking gear? I think the greatest advantage for backpackers that don't have their own gear yet that you can buy a complete set that is nicely balanced and what seems to be of good quality. This means that you should be fine for maybe years and can upgrade for instance the headlamp or whatever. What it prevents is a lot of time spend on gathering all starting gear and maybe preventing you from some bad decisions, such as buying a tent, sleeping bag or insulated pad that is not up to the task and can potentially ruin your backpacking trip. Therefor, I think there is a market for this and it could actually even help new backpackers to save money on the long term or make them more enthusiastic about backpacking then if they would have bought unbalanced gear where they saved to much money on certain essential(s).

@@jeffbridges4881actually I found out that it is cheaper than that, it is just below 1000 for the 30 items including food backpack and 870 for the 20 items backpack that basically has all the essentials you could think off. Most expensive parts are the bag, tent, mat and sleeping bag which are already good for 90% of the price if you would buy them seperately. Next that you pay for the convenience, it seems also not be low budget gear that is included.

The tent is WAY BETTER than "decent"! Good video with fair feedback. I have the entire setup including the 1st gen backpack. I am excited to see that there is an adjustable version being released. I am 6'2 and always wanted it to be a bit bigger. Im glad that has been addressed. But no joke, the tent is top tier! Ive had my tent for a few years now and it's held up great. Dan has a lot of sponsors to make happy (just look at the link in description!). For anyone curious or thinking about buying something, I think the gear is way better than "decent". Just my 2 cents.

I put up the first review of the Near Zero 2p tent, its a really good tent, the only downside is it weights about 3.3lbs which compared to my x-mid 2p at 2.2 lbs still a bit extra weight there.

I want that backpack! I actually own the original Dean backpack and I'm so excited NEAR ZERO upgraded it! The straps and torso fit were always an issue for me, so I'm glad they are being addressed. I also own other NEAR ZERO products and I think they are awesome for the price. The 2 person tent, quilt, and sleeping pad are quality products and definitely worth a try for backpackers!

Dan, no way will I ever not need expert advice from someone like you. Companies "sell" products and you Dan come to give us the real low down on equipment. Honestly, I don't really backpack (65 y/o) like I did but, I hike & I love your videos! They're funny (cue in the karate chops to the tent) as always and above all, reviews are by someone like me for me. Without you, I would not find out about equipment, locations, and entertainment. No way are you in jeopardy of being replaced.

From the perspective of providing a solution to a real-world pain point that new backpackers have, this is a great idea! One company doing this while trying to keep everything lightweight, good quality, and affordable is a disaster waiting to happen because they would have an uphill battle fighting the early criticism. If a company like Sea to Summit, or heck, even REI with their co-op brand, tried this sort of all-in-one package, it'd still be hard to get right without being super expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if this trend catches on! But also half the run is testing and trying new things.

Great concept, and great feedback! This is just the kind of thing that can bring overwhelmed new hikers/campers into the fold as well as allow the more seasoned to build out a larger set of tools to meet the need. Big fan of the Near Zero logo.

As a new company there is plenty of room for improvement. Camping, backpacking and hiking is becoming more and more popular. I think we will see this concept grow. I have wondered why more stores and manufacturers have not offered such a service. Start with overnighters and possibly renting equipment to first time backpackers. The occasional weekend warrior doesn't need the latest hi tech, most expensive ultra light gear to enjoy an overnight trip with their daughter or son. We must remember, it is not so much about the gear as it is about a bonding adventure. Now we need more places for everyone to enjoy.

Great review And a great system/product. My 1st backpacking ventures was with the Boy Scouts back in the early 70s. Ever since then, I've packed the old school items into military style packs... not comfortable for long hikes. And, with technology, packs have gotten lighter, stronger, and more supportive. If I were to need a pack.. THIS is what I would get.

I love this whole concept! It would be incredibly hard to come up with a product to please everyone and this system is customizable enough to really provide a beginner, or someone without all the necessary gear, an easy access point with higher quality gear. As a female, newer backpacker, I love the organization system, and I love that it takes the guess work out of what I’m doing so I can be confident that I have everything I need and that I know how to pack it. It’s a great company, love how responsive they are and that they’re really trying to make the outdoors accessible to as many as possible!

I think something like this has a ton of benefit for those who are traveling from overseas. You can get something like this, and not have to worry about putting a kit together. Just get it sent to a post office.

I assembled my own first pack based on Boy Scout memory. It was a cheap 65L Amazon pack that “looked cool”. I had all the essentials: a 7 lb tent, a 4lb self inflating sleeping pad, a steel folding trowel, like 9 different seasonings for some reason, and a heavy rubber solar shower. Yep. All the essentials and it only weighed 75lbs. The best part was that with that much weight, the shoulder straps turned on their sides so they were slicing into my shoulders. Ahhh the good ol days.

That bag would make a novice backpacker feel at ease. As someone who gets annoyed when things don’t fit back the way I want, I’d like to try even the basic version of the backpack. It’s cool that the owner is making the adjustments to the straps and taking into account the feedback he’s getting from customers. Interested to see what comes next from Near Zero.

I think it’s in interesting concept especially for a first timer or very occasional camper/backpacker. I’m guessing most people who view this channel aren’t, and so they will not think this has any value. But imagine your kid brother’s friend wants to joins a trip and has no gear. What’s easier? Finding all the old gear you’ve relegated to the shelf? Maybe borrowing this and that from a friends? Or grabbing this ready to go kit? I’d say it’s worth having as a stand by for the drop in backpacker who joins without gear or experience. Why not? Thanks for sharing Dan! (I’m imaging if a professional chef channel reviewed the basic kitchen starter kit from IKEA and viewers lambasting it for not have a zester or a 2” maple rolling pin, a chinois or salamander. What, no couche or lame? What about the truffle plane?)

I used to live in a small isolated mountain town, which was supported by major industry. We would get new workers moving to town to work in the local industry, who would fall in love with the area and start backpacking some of the local peaks. Given the isolation of the town, I can see some of those people being intrigued by a product like this as long as it has the support of the backpacking community, such as yourself. It would be much easier than attempting to spend a day off traveling to surrounding communities to try and find backpacking gear.

Great review. Glad to see they are willing and interested it improvements and not a company that has the attitude of "You'll take what we give you and you'll be happy about it!" But I totally agree with you, Dan, that this is mainly for beginners. As someone who has spent thousands already on gear, this is not appealing to me. BUT I can take some of what they've done as tips to improve my own setup. Nice find. And no it won't end your channel. Many of us still want, and enjoy, to do our own research and packing.

Seems like a really great entry level equipment at a great price! But many backpackers want to make their own improvements, even if full packages like this become a big thing in the future. Love the initiative and it seem Near Zero strive to make it a great product, making it easy for the new backpacker!

I own and use the 2P and 3P tents and a couple of the sleeping bags. I came from my REI half dome (love that old tent). The Near Zero 3P is the weight of the half dome and I absolutely love it, great quality and super simple to set up. The sleeping bags pack down so small with a subfreezing rating, you can't beat it for the price. Great concept. it would be prefect if I had an overseas hiking/camping trip, and I just rented it for my adventure at the landing airport or some lcoal gear shop (b/c I'd probably have to buy fuel and food anyway)

I feel newbies won’t be spending that much, I bought a used 75 liter pack off eBay for $120 and everything else off amazon, see people are lazy nowadays and they don’t want to learn, I’d rather go through all the process and know what I have and that I packed it myself, but I’ve always been like this maybe from the military, but it’s a great concept but you can literally do this setup for 1/2 if not 1/3 that price, it’s not hard to find 2-4 day backpacking pack lists and use that as a direction, I’m the guy that if I’m going to do something like this, I need to know about it very well and experience the process myself in detail and I feel more people should do that, it’s like how photography has been for me, yea it’s taken awhile to learn but I much more enjoy the process of knowledge

I like how you can remove things from the bundles that you know you wont need (I'll never need a firestsrting kit over in the UK), don't think they had that last time I had a look after you mentioned them. And at the very least it gives someone an idea of what they actually need to pack. Honestly, the only thing I think will shock new hikers is how much a relatively decent pack/pad/sleeping bag actually costs.

I like this idea of a total package price. Where I might be able to con a friend who's never even camped into going backpacking with me. 😅 Send them this rather than a shopping list & say "hey just buy this and join me, we're going to hike for 10, or 20-30 miles." And they were gonna spend more for a hotel for 3 nights in many places. But now they have a decent setup for the next trip & can try other gear.

Seems like a good entry-level way of getting ready to head out. I mean if you just found out you were leaving tomorrow and had no gear this would definitely get you out there. I believe this is a great idea for some people and who knows if the company really takes off. They might even come out with better packs and better gear where maybe you can customize the pack even more with what youd like. Like maybe theres 4 different types of shovels you can choose from ect. I think its a cool idea coming up with new ways of organizing the back pack. However I am super happy with my Gregory back pack especially with the way the backing is done. It could use a few more straps but than again i haven't looked to see whats new on the market. As a thru hiker i spend 3 times that trying out different gear. and now i have a closet full of gear. If i was new to backpacking and my goal was a 100 to 300 miles a year. Buy this and hit the trail. learn add subtract as you get in the miles.

So is this basically just an overnight setup? I ask because I saw absolutely no place for clothing storage. So unless you are just someone who wears the same outfit for your entire trip, you would be hard-pressed to find a spot for additional clothing. Maybe the mid-tier option that comes with less stuff would allow for things like a down jacket, rain jacket, extra socks, etc. Also, the 55-L pack is still not listed on their website so they may not have switched to that setup as of yet. 5 liters isn't a lot for storage but it would help. I do like the fact that they let you pick and choose items for your pack like swapping the tea kettle for a 1000ml cook pot (who uses a tea kettle?) I think some smaller options might be handy as well. I use a 700ml pot which is a bit smaller but more than adequate. It's definitely an interesting concept to be sure. A bit pricier than maybe going to REI and having someone help you gear up but convenience comes with a price.

For additional space for clothing (if loaded up with all 30-items), we recommend placing the tent on the outside, attached to the bottom buckled straps. This will free up a lot of space inside for additional clothing and food. The outside mesh pocket can also be used for placing jackets, sandals, or other last-minute items. The new upgraded 55L pack (available Sept 9) has additional volume capacity within the pack, that will allow more room for adding clothing, and other items (without having to reposition the tent).

I put up the first review of the near zero 2p tent. Its a good tent, lots of features just weighs about an extra pound over the x-mid 2p.

One problem here is the fact that they would include a shovel? It seems like they just threw that in in order to sell a more expensive package without considering that nobody would ever need to bring a shovel. A great way to deceive beginners and have them bring more weight than necessary.

They offer three bundles, the shovel is only in the most expensive. You can also customize the bundles by un-checking many of the items on the list for each bundle (some also have alternative options) saving both weight and money. It's very clear on their website.

Cool concept! IMO though, thats one of the fun things for new campers/backpackers is buying cheap gear to see if you like it first and then upgrading as you go along. Thats how I did it and i think thats the best way to learn. Kind of like the "teach a man to fish" saying.

people hate on the 70L life and I thought about returning it when I first got it, but 4 years into backpacking honestly I still love it, it affords me plenty of room to pack everything I could want and still have a tad bit of room left, I usually don't come close to filling it but it is nice to know i have the space available.

So, no space for extra water for those of us who backpack in areas where there's often none to filter. No provision for a bear canister for the parks that don't allow hanging. And good headlamps are cheap enough, and absolutely critical in many areas, that grabbing whatever garbage they can find on alibaba is an absolute deal breaker.

I'm really curious about their insulated sleeping pad, and the quilt/bag that weights only 1lb. Those both look like good solid ultralight options for the 3-season camping and there's not enough video's/reviews out about them.

The thing Dan did, was look at this system as an experienced backpacker, who has access to the finest gear out there. He started to pick apart items, features, etc. But, if you give this to a new backpacker, they would be really happy to see that everything is good quality, everything is well thought out, and complete. THAT is how this should have been reviewed.

sadly I didn’t hear about this company until now. I would have been their perfect customer. I recently spent weeks researching for best bang for the buck items starting at zero gear as I didn’t wanted to buy thrash nor top-notch expensive stuff. Spent around 1200 at the end, plus the time spent researching, driving to the shops and so on.

As a past threw hiker and somebody who has upgraded from gear-to-gear-to-gear like most of us have, I think this is super legit. I love this style of front zipper. I understand it's not how we organize our packs, but I hate disorganization, especially the yard sale of organized stuff sacks in the tent. So I would totally point my brothers or friends to this for those who just need the gear to get out. I'd say it's a huge money savings in the end.

I don't know about the wood handled shovel, but the kit is a cool concept. I'm glad Near Zero did well in the execution. I've seen other attempts at the all-in-one kit, but Dan is right, they're mostly crap.

This system would be awesome for my friends that don’t have much gear and I’m trying to get them into multi day hiking. Side note: From the video clips alone, I knew exactly what trail you were hiking. I was just there 2 months ago. Such a great trail. How far out did you go? I just did 6 miles out and back to tunnel falls on a day off. How did you like holding that cable rail with a 2’ wide trail on the edge of the cliff?

I would not view that as novice or entry level, but rather, as the second step in being outdoors. It's for when people decide they are going to take being outdoors a bit more seriously and really look at their system, and that is a pretty organized system. The labeling everywhere will seem odd to people who camp often, but I've been with people who cannot get their gear back in their bag at camp, because they had plenty of time at home to pack, did so well, but now simply can't remember, in the morning, how they packed everything. Simple reminders help.

You know that is a great start kit/ backpack people ask me about hiking and backpacking and I tell them to buy a small pack and some inexpensive gear and then go try it out. Because you might either like backpacking or not like backpacking. So that way the person is not out of large amounts of money. Thanks for this video.

Backpacking gear for the most part isn't a one size fits all and so I would find this difficult for someone to create a kit, but the idea of the backpack design is great!

As an outdoor enthusiast, I have been following this brand and its amazing to see the innovations they do and I know the founder Scott Jensen is deeply passionate about outdoors and hiking. This gives an edge to the products with insights and experience that can be bought in only by a hiker. I hope they launch this in India soon. I will definitely pick up one.

Near zero has been around awhile now. I’ve had one of their tents for a while. Not a bad weight for price but I lie featherstone better but it’s heavier. I use these for extra backpackers

There is probably a lot of people who may not like this product here in the comments, but that's because most people watching the channel are experienced backpackers. It takes all of 2 minutes to realize that this product isn't for the experienced backpacker. This is for the person who has zero gear and zero knowledge who needs a full setup to join their friends on the overnight trip they are going on next week or so. If this product gets more people outside and, on the trail, I say awesome! I hope the company succeeds!! Well done!
