Great Big Story

Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

France has the Palace of Versailles, Hungary has the Royal Palace of Gödöllő-a baroque manor just half an hour away from Budapest. The ornate palace was built for Hungary’s royals; today, it is open to the public. Completed in 1748 and recently renovated, the palatial home is full of grand halls and secret rooms. It even has its own church and theater complete with an orchestra pit. One of the royal residents, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the Queen of Hungary, left behind a notable touch-rooms bathed in a brilliant hue of violet.

Point of interest. There is a room in the castle with an artificial marble interior. The queen preferred the artificial over the real one, because at that time is was much more expensive than buying real marble.

A palace can be a residence of any noble or aristocratic family (Palazzo Medici-Ricardi, Doge's palace etc), I'm an art historian and that's literally what they're called. It's a type of residential building, not necessarily related to a royal family.

They had palaces you mean? Versailles wasn't the first Royal palace ever built? A palace is simply a type of building that royal and aristocratic families could afford to build, so they did.

@@hannersification of course they had palaces. I am talking about them building things specifically to copy Versailles or to show up the french
@hannersification

@@tanya292 this palace has nothing to do with Versailles. The layout, the plan, elements of architecture and interior decoration are completely different and intentionally more subdued here as this palace was build like a century after Versailles. The title is a figure of speech, as in "this palace holds the same importance in Hungary as Versailles does in France"

@@hannersification And I am talking about a common European thing where people actually got palaces built so that they could have a battle of wealth and importance. Also you're taking a joking KZfaq comment too seriously
@jasonnung2645
@jasonnung2645 4 жыл бұрын
tanya that is actually partially correct. The french and their court in Versailles was considered the pinnacle of opulence and sophistication in the 17th and 18th centuries. As the result, many royal palaces in Europe intentionally sought to emulate the layout and style of Versailles, with some local flairs. Examples include the Catherine Palace of Russia, Rundale Palace of Latvia, Caserta Palace of Italy, and Charlottenburg Palace in Germany.
