Before watching your channel: - I kept 2 female bettas, a platy, a harleyquin tetra and 2 guppies in a 5 galon tank - tank pebbles were huge and bright red - All decorations were fake Now: - I keep cloud mountain minnows (6) in the same 5 galon tank (we have other tanks so we split them (old community) up and spread them around, it's been around a year and the bettas died of bladder issues from giving the same amounts of food with less fish. Learned from my mistakes) - tank pebbles are now black gravel (too big to eat) - Decorations are now all real plants and a piece of wood (including a carpet plant and some tall plants to hide the back) Thank you for the education and entertainment Chris!

F. Though it's most likely not your fault tbh, a lot of betta fish are inbred or already ill from all the stress and bad conditions in the store.

Bettas be like that. I got a high quality one from my LFS and it lasted two months. I got a deformed one from PetSmart and it’s now 2.5 years old.

Sometimes it be like that. A lot of pet stores don't treat their livestock great unless they're a cat or dog. Probably was ill or old when you got it. Don't give up 💕

Was the ageism and sexism necessary (even if some of us consider 40 to still be the larval stage)? Someone's buying all the clown puke gravel and it wasn't me in second grade in the seventies, and it isn't me now (pushing a thousand years). There's a lot of stupid old people because there's a lot of stupid people protected from receiving their Darwin Awards that used to be *stupid young people* , and they were just as annoying in the day.

To me, all bettas are beautiful for their perfections and imperfections, and that's coming from someone who use to breed them. The people who blatantly tells you to throw your fish away because it ain't beautiful really shows their morals and how little they care about a fish for it's personality.

My tank is almost ready for review. I still consider it my first try, but it's gone through several iterations. The whole "expectation vs reality" hit a little too close to home. But thanks to your videos I'm a much better fish dad than I was 6 months ago.

Problem with bettas is they all want to kill each other and there’s only so much space in an apartment.

@@adrianheng7095 Yeah, theoretically, Bettas will survive in something smaller than 5 gallons. They can survive in a jar provided you somehow heat it and keep on changing the water. It's more of an ethical issue for me :). If you don't have space, I guess a 2.5 gallon will suffice, just make sure it isn't one of those tall 2.5G ones.

I just got myself a betta named Lil Prick over a month ago, we started with a three-gallon tank and quickly moved to a ten-gallon tank. He has tons plants, a floating log along with other hiding spots, and a normal nonpainted substrate. We got him a couple of Mollys and snails for tank mates and he's happier than ever.

I work at petco. Was trying to explain to a guest that 4 angel fish in a 13 gallon tank was not a proper habitat and she continued to argue saying that she knew what she was doing and petco shouldn't be telling people how to keep their fish... ugh

I’m a beginner hobbyist, and my parents bought my brother a betta fish in a BOWL and I was like “no” so I bought a 10 gallon and tank mates for him. But we are really tight on money so I still have some plastic to plants in there but I do have some java fern, anubias nana, river rock, and driftwood. The betta is a sickly fish though and I have had to separate him to treat him for fin biting that got infected and turned into fin rot. I’m trying but we might have to get some Clove oil if he doesn’t get better, because it hasn’t changed even though I do daily water changes and treatments

your rant around 3:00 was actually super helpful, I kept a super colourful single male half-moon betta (from a large chain pet store that I worked at, at the time) in a 10 gallon that I researched like crazy, cycled fully, had natural scape and live plants, heater and suitable filtration, and after 6 months he started to really struggle, I tried treating and medicating him and tried to nurse him for a few more moths but he didn't make it. I thought I did something wrong and actually stopped keeping fish entirely because of it. I should've known because the huge shipment of male betta our "supplier" sent us weekly usually had a decent amount who failed to thrive. :(

I have a male betta and he is from petsmart. He looked so sad and sick so I bought him and took him home. One year later he looks so pretty and is so healthy. I really wasn't sure he'd even make it a few months. He lives in a 55 gallon tank with cory catfish and he has the best temperament.

Horror Story- My friend has a classic fish bowl and has not one but TWO goldfish inside!!! They were both fish won at a carnival and based on what I've seen they are overfeed and have poor water conditions. Sadly there is only one left. :( The good news is that a different friend of mine are awesome fish keepers and take care of their fish very well.

I got two female bettas and I have a 40 gallon separated into two 20 gallons. The tank runs on one filter and one heater because the divider is acrylic with pinholes throughout it.

Someone came into my petstore this week and started looking at the bettas, so I went over to try and talk them out of putting them in bowls like I always do. Me: "have you had bettas before?" Them: "Yes. It just died. I'm here to replace him." Me: "Oh, how long did he live." Them: "Pretty long, a couple of weeks." Me: -.-

Try telling them that when kept in a good home they live for 2-5 years. And that they should strive for that rather than a few weeks

0:47 as a betta breeder we use this to take a picture of the betta when selling them it's only temporary but we don't shake it.

I have rescued 3 male bettas (two crowntails and one veiltale) in the past and had them for about 2.5 years only a week before they passed they had trouble swimming.

I got a young male betta from a big pet chain, and I'm so glad he's been able to live a normal fish life. I've never seen him struggle to swim and he's now 2 or 3 years old. I love your channel and all the info you share about fish-keeping. I hope knowing that my big chain betta is living a good, healthy life gives you some hope.

I just like seeing the way fish behave in the tank. I don't really care much about colour or pattern. Most of the fish in my tank are quite boring looking for colours but the way they behave is so cool

There is 1 person on KZfaq that is allowed to put fish in a tiny box of water, extreme philly fishing... It puts them in the a lil clear box for the sake of taking a quick photo. This is mostly done for identification purposes. They are in the box for seconds then released after being cataloged.

My friends have had a 6 inch single tail goldfish in a 10 litre tank that had green water and fruity pebble substrate and I was speechless because this friend LOVES animals, but apparently only animals over a foot tall

AAGGHH!! Watching you makes me feel SO envious!!! Before I moved out of my moms place (and into the worlds smallest apartment) my mom had a 120 gallon tank with about 20 or so fish in it. I LOVED planting that tank and miss it sooo much!! 💔💔💔

I’m so glad I found the fish side of KZfaq!!! My betta is in their basic-bought-from-the-pet-store tank but I recently got a 10.5 gallon for him! I’ve been filtering the tank through while researching what to add so my betta will be happiest before plopping him into the new tank but I am beyond excited to find the right plants and seeing if tank buddies might be a good idea for him, so far he’s got quite the personality but I’m not sure if that means he’ll be too sassy for tank mates or will thrive with tank mates.

One time I went to my neighbors house because we were friends. He told me he got a betta fish, of course, anxiety went brrrr. Turns out it was in a container the size of 3 middle fingers 🥲 It died in like a week 😪 Also we’re no longer friends just because of that. I should have bought it off of him but I only had a guppy tank.

My Non-Binary heart just got really happy when he said "He, or She, or *They*" I'm smiling so wide, because I just had a family reunion and everyone used the wrong pronouns, so that made me feel included. It's such a small thing but it made my day better. Thanks Chris.

I have got my first rank recently and I got a 10 gallon. I have a betta, 2 albino corydoras, 3 mystery snails. I have a few artificial plants and some artificial stones and logs for hidy holes and such.
