I was excited for characters like ann, Yusuke and Ryuji when we first met them but they all completely threw away the character growth they had in their arcs to become vapid comedy relief. that's one of the reasons I think akechi and sumire are so beloved- they seem like normal (ish) humans compared to the rest of the phantom thieves

This and every hot springs scene (except maybe P3 where it at least gave you a chance to avoid being slapped for no good reason) are the most immersion breaking moments in Persona series. Do Japanese people really find that shit funny? Because I can't think of a single streamer or person who would enjoy and/or find funny Ryuji beatdown & hot springs scenes. Saddest part is the psychopath asshole with daddy issues who is responsible for 2 of phantom thieves parents deaths & giving Shido power & help to become the Villain (and to make it worse shows no signs of remorse) gets more sympathy, respect & understanding from PT than genuinely good (even if not too bright) guy who was willing to risk his life to save his friends. And no, Akechi didn't sacrifice shit, he was already dying so it was his first good deed in live to possibly save PT. For anyone waiting for P6 I highly recommend playing 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. This is newest game by Atlus that had no marketing at all but has the best plot in all gaming (or rather in all entertainment) + so much interesting stuff (13 main characters is not the weirdest part) & characters that it's crime how underrated it is. I mean if you would tell me that one game will have plot that is Steins Gate + AoT + Matrix + Mecha shows + lot other stuff all put together that not only works but makes perfect sense I wouldn't believe it but it actually is that. Think Persona but with more realistic characters & actually great plot + better fighting mechanics. @Faz did you check out 13 Sentinels and if, is there some cut content/stuff out of it that you would want to make videos about?

Some of the slapstick with ryuji in the game is fine if you ask me, it's a kind of comedy Japan likes but... sometimes they take it too far like here. Persona 5’s story would be so much better if they didn’t lean so damn hard on the anime tropes and more like SMT in it’s storytelling aspects. Could have been the darkest modern Persona entry since Persona 2 without these tropey trappings being in the way. For fuck’s sake, it starts like an abusive sexual predator that made a girl try to end her life by jumping off a roof. Think of how the rest of the game could have been if they kept it to that really dark writing style with the occasional comedic moments to break up the darkness once in a while.

@@machine1685 It feels like they put the most effort into making Kamoshida a despicable human being by showing and presenting his sins in the real world. Something that we don’t really see with Madarame and other characters including Kaneshiro whom you think would be a more evil person than Kamoshida by virtue of his role as a crime boss but we don’t really see much of their rotten sides outside of their Metaverse counterparts. Okumura is especially terrible in not having his real world actions shown on screen and the game tries to make him out as a sympathetic character without bothering to convey that. Madarame’s neglect could have been shown, Kaneshiro’s criminal behaviour could have been shown and implicated and Okumura’s overworking of his employees in the real world could have been shown on screen. As much as P5 The Animation gets wrong including shoehorning Akechi into scenes that were for Sae, it did try to show more of the other Palace rulers’ sins and they changed this atrocious scene as well.

We learn what hes done to Ryuji, witness the abuse Mishima goes threw, Ann's desperation, and Shiho's suicide attempt. And to top it off, the adults all know about it and turn a blind eye to it. We witness true injustice that only we as the PT can stop. The other bosses simply dont have that.

They could have had him try to extort Haru’s father for money once she got caught up in Makoto’s mess while they could have tied the guy’s connection to the death of Makoto’s father in some form or something to have commonality with her than what we got.

I know most of his angst and desire for revenge on Shido comes from something that is mostly a Japanese taboo (born from a single mother and a literal son of a whore, which is bad everywhere but it is way worse in Japan), but using that as an excuse for his murders... Yeah, only in Japan.

If they had to vent their anger at him in their grief, comedic slaps to the face would have been more preferable than this and you could have actually gotten a hilarious comment out of him when Haru gives him one like this: “For real Haru, how strong is that fffing hand of yours!?”

Deadly? The guy was just knocked down a few notches. Calling it deadly is an exageration.

Fortunately, Strikers toned down the abuse on him and limit it to just the physical contact with most of the jails in a way that actually is pretty funny with how they execute the scenes. Unfortunately it has it’s own equivalent to this one but with all the boys involved. Though if they were going to make him the comic relief, then they should have probably omitted the physical abuse backstory for him or stop leaning so damn hard on those anime tropes instead of having their cake and eat it ordeal.

If it's in the same context as this scene, sure. It may be more popular against men but anime has had all types of jokes that include violence and abuse against women as well. If a scene is clearly intended to be just a joke, why take it seriously? Also, if being a decent human being is just so important to people, even in fiction, why do people who are outraged about this scene still like, love, and defend Ryuji considering he exbihits questionable behaviors himself that are unbecoming of a "good friend"? People should just admit they got hots for Ryuji and they're willing to overlook the same dumb anime tropes that they claim is their issue with this scene or some sort of bad writing. Ryuji isn't independent of Persona or Atlus but people make it as if he's a real person who is a victim of Atlus' abuse.

The Morgana and Ryuji relationship dynamic isn't like verbal abuse. Mona knows that Ryuji has a strong sense of will and he knows what he can handle so teasing him on the stuff he says throughout the game never effected ryuji. Its kind of like one of those relationships with a friend where you guys constantly shit on each other which i do with a best friend of mine and what they say is mild compared XD. And they actually do like each other you can see in the serious scenes they actually care alot bout each other as friends. In the end its honestly not that serious, and i've played through the game thrice and really payed attention to all of it. And about the whole thing with Ryuji calling Morgana useless, sometimes you say stuff to someone but you actually have no clue if it'll hurt someone and this was the case as well Ryuji said 4 times spread out actually all in like a 2-3 week time, it was a mental decline for morgana at that point so it really struck a nerve with him Not trynna say your wrong just trying to point out the dynamic between them, they still pretty good friends (although this scene where he gets beat up inexcusable, also morgana was the only one who didnt take part of this in the scene in the cut out version for the canon version that being joker and morgana)

Well, he mocked the girls for crying when he supposedly died, so yeah. He ruined his 5 minutes of fame by putting his foot in his mouth.

One thing with this game that constantly got me mad was 1)Ann constant sexualize after surviving abuse from an older man 2)Ryuji’s physical abuse in this scene after surviving 2 PHYSICAL ATTACKS from 2 different people in his life Stuff like this was never funny whatsoever, their survivors and they downplay it for comedic relief. Nothing was funny about either of the cases
