10:20 As a lovely patron pointed out, tofu is mostly fat per percentage of calories, but it's mostly protein by weight (fat has more calories per gram than protein or carbs). Not sure why I assumed percentage of calories, I guess weight makes more sense in terms of which macronutrient is dominant in a food? As if any of this shit makes sense lol So according to Dr. Mona, the only way we could be vegan and get enough protein would be to eat mock meats, protein powder, *and* soy. Shes anti-soy btw because of course she is ("however much you can limit soy is better" from her 7 healthy snacks video)

That's how the dairy industry get away with saying full fat milk is only 2 or 3% fat. They give the percentage figure by weight, which is true, as milk is mostly water which is heavy. But it is nearly 50% fat as regards the calories it contains, which is the important figure. Sorry if you already knew this, just thought the idea was relevant.
@Theorimlig
@Theorimlig 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisJ294 Surely what percentage of the total product is fat is more relevant anyway? Who cares how much of the calories in milk is fat? The rest is sugar.
@ChrisJ294
@ChrisJ294 5 жыл бұрын
@@Theorimlig Because it's the calories you absorb. The rest you piss away. When you consume a food you want to know if it's high in fat, sugar, salt etc. And to know that, it's helpful to know which percentage of calories is which. And some of us do care how much fat is in food. We aren't all swallowers of flat earth Atkins bullshit.

Lilith Nox Well are we not all blind to a very large extent? We know what we think we know from experts; our parents, teachers, professors, documentaries, scientific publications, etc. There is only a fragment of the world we know because we have directly experienced it or tested how something works. We have to rely on experts for all the rest. Sure we can be more certain of ‘expert opinion’ by comparing multiple accounts and combining it with what we already know, but still we have built a society that thrives on trusting ‘the expert’. I think we could do better in teaching people to not follow just anyone who claims to be an expert. Have you never believed someone that had a good story and pretended to be an expert and latter thought better of it? I think most people have.

mydirtyfeet just because someone has SOME credentials it does not mean they are right in everything. Especially someone talking about something they don’t really have education on. It is always important to have your minds open to doubt. Even more some when it comes to health and nutrition. Check first before just going for something because some expert (who’s expertise is not even nutrition) makes claims about how should you do something that actually affects your health. And no. I don’t i always check everything. Specially when is something so esoteric. Its how i grew up. And its what kind of person i am. Question everything, ask question, get different perspective. I think its my greatest quality in life.

there are two quotes that I live by. first is "Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense”. And if I only lived by that, it would be easy to blindly follow someone who feels like is speaking to me. I study nutrition and I once believed in the "rotten fruit" theory too. But I also live by "“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.” , and that's why if I believe something someone says, I always have to make sure they are correct in what they said!

The clip around 12:40 where Mona talks about food “putrefying” or rotting is so so so dangerous to those out there who may be struggling with disordered eating. My biggest problem during my eating disorder was that I was TERRIFIED of food rotting in my stomach, so as a result I would only eat foods like carbohydrates which digest easily. Although many people associate anorexics/bulimics with avoiding carbs because they’re “bad” food, I know other people who did or just as I did.

Doctors may not receive diet classes as separate courses, but they have to learn the physiology of digestion, enzyme deficiencies and management of metabolic diseases. I do not agree that they have no qualification to recommend or educate people on their diet. Dieticians specialize in diets so they are really great for long-term management and education.

She clearly has a gross misunderstanding of how the digestive tract works 😅 different macronutrients are broken down by their respective enzymes in different parts of the digestive tract (protein mostly in the stomach, carbs in the mouth and small intestine, and fat in the small intestine). Your body is so smart- it already has the pH thing figured out. The stomach is super acidic for protein digestion and the small intestine is less acidic for the rest. Trying to isolate macronutrients makes zero sense 😅

Actually there are medical conditions that can cause food to "rot" within the stomach. But it's not the type of rotting that you imagine when you hear the word rot. The condition called Gastroparesis, is a condition that slows the gastric emptying of the bodies digestive system, which leaves most if not all food in your stomach for extended lengths of time. So while the food isn't rotting like if you left a tomato sitting on the counter for a week, it does rot in the sense that it spoils and causes symptoms of food poisoning. I personally have this condition and it's not fun, my gastric emptying function is between 25%-35%, and this causes severe nausea (24/7), episodes of vomiting, and bowel disturbances. Thankfully, I am lucky and have found a combination of medications that help with the nausea at least. I just thought I would share this because you said that food doesn't rot in the stomach, but it can. I don't think it rots because of the combination of foods and what time you eat certain foods, but there are those people who do experience food rotting in their system. I'm not a doctor, but I would say if anyone is experiencing digestive problems like severe non-stop nausea, vomiting and bowel changes then you should definitely see a gastroenterologist, because something could be really really wrong with your system.

I'm starting to suspect that the crazier the diet, the more sanctimonious and self righteous the presenter. Sort of a dietary Calvinism. The more you suffer the more holy you are...... I can eat just about anything. The idea that "modern people" can't eat foods we ate 100 years ago is asinine.

I remember you from 30BAD when I was a raw vegan. I'm proud of you for always putting your true opinion out there. It makes me soooo much more confident to not fall back into that mindset. I had a stint a few months ago, trying to go raw again, because I remember being happier (had to do with other life factors, not food.) and then i found your videos, recognized you from the forums. Looking back now, you really did look very anemic on raw. I also had anemia as a child on a meat diet and it led to permanent nerve damage in my hips on the raw food diet. You look great now.I feel like I snapped out the little vortex I started to fall back into thanks to your videos.

Most of these extremely skinny women who talk about restricting food seem to have some kind of an eating disorder 😔 the saddest part is that so many refuse to see it and encourage others to do the same under the veil of fitness etc...

Ya know. I wrote up a rule that my vampires in my fantasy story shouldn't eat normal foods because it will rot in their stomachs as they are undead, and the body just wants blood. Turns out, that wasn't as original a thought I thought it was Because some people are just insane. Someone fell asleep when it came to digestive enzymes. And the digestive track in general. How did she manage to get her grade?? Did she forget all of this very basic stuff the moment she get her degree? Is that what happened?

@@Starry_Night_Sky7455 A lot of the vampires switched over to blood packs as soon as they could, because its just a disease and doesn't turn them into heartless monsters. However it isnt all that good since they are taking blood that is needed for transfusions, and most of the time the plasma, red blood cells etc are separated for different kinds of transfusions. So its not like, a full meal. More like a snack.

Thank you so much for dispelling this myth. My sister has fallen prey to believing this for a long time, but recently started to question the sense in it. I watched abbey sharp critique it the other day, and I am so glad a vegan can talk about it because it's so prevalent in the community. It really sets up a person to be orthorexic about their meals.

Food combining is important for people with IBS on a low fodmap diet. Essentially, you consider food a "dose" of specific sugars that you react to. You can consume fodmaps in moderation. Each food contributes to that dose. So while her explanations were wacky, such tactics are used by people trying to figure out their dietary intolerance.

I had a dietitian recommend using food combining when I was first diagnosed with IBS (~7 years ago) and eating simpler meals did make me feel a lot better. I ended up going vegan sometime later, and the increased fiber intake + using some of the food combining principles has put my IBS symptoms in remission for over 5 years But I'm not sure why anyone else would choose to follow food combining if they don't have underlying digestive problems - you're missing out on a lot of delicious combos! I had no idea people were using this as a fad diet thing...I mean, there's no logic reason to think this would make you lose weight???
