I own a pair of HD 599 SE, prime day had them for $98. They're solid and imo a good complement to a pair of HD650/HD6XX. I still listen to them sometimes but the Arya are my primary cans.

I have already preordered this phone and it's much for the reasons Josh has laid out. I am an audio, cinema and camera enthusiast, so this phone really checks a lot of boxes all at once for me. The major thing Josh only briefly mentioned in this review is EXPANDABLE STORAGE. You can drop a 1tb micro SD card in this sucker. That's a LOT of music or 4K video or photos in both JPEG and RAW. This is a MAJOR selling point that is almost completely gone from the flagship phone space.

Because carrying a large camera at all times isn't convenient, and this phone offers many of the features of a serious camera, such as realistic colors, eye auto focus, RAW shooting, and telephoto lens.

If you are audio enthusiast I doubt you will use your phone to listen to music? And even if you do, you have to have some dac/amp, at least in a form of dongle? If you are cinema enthusiast, you are not joking that you plan to watch movies on a 6.5 inch phone? For a camera enthusiast, shouldn't you get a phone with a bit better camera? Like any other flagship? Maybe Vivo X60, Xiaomi Mi11 Ultra? If you like UW maybe OnePlus 9 Pro? Anything at all? This sony has by very far the single worst camera found in any flagship currently, and no fancly looking manual mode doesn't magically help you, it can only help fix very bad auto mode, but manual mode is present in all the other flagships as well, with pretty much almost all or all options that this has. So all 3 things are not logical to me, audio enthusiast do not plug in stuff straight to phone, cinema enthusiast do not do blasphemy such as watching a movie on a phone, camera enthusiasts never use phone for anything serious, and for casual/auto stuff Sony is just the worst. Very weird...

The phone packs a lot of good stuff, but unfortunetly not everything, im missing the wireless charging.. but the 5 III might be an option for me when i will get my next phone.

I think this will be my next phone. I care about audio and even if the amp isn't the strongest, I'd rather not spend $150-200 on a strong portable DAC/AMP to carry everywhere when I want to listen to music. It includes the 30 watt charger which is nice because I don't own any PD chargers outside the one in my car. I've been wanting to get serious with cameras so this will let me learn and take good photos at the same time. In general I could care less about the screen but the fact it doesn't have a notch or camera punch is a plus. I'm also thankful for the expandable storage which I hadn't even thought was something I would need to look for on an Android till recently.

I've heard the LG dac/amp solution in the G8 (iirc V60 isn't different) and the 5ii (iirc it's the same as the 1ii and 1iii) - dac quality is about the same, but the amp difference is huge. you can actually drive some less demanding over-ears with the V60, the sony offering is basically iem only.

First time coming across your content, thank you for bringing this phone to my attention, it really is a dying breed of phones that combine everything into one package, especially on the audio features which I have been spoiled by with my two most recent phones being the HTC 10 and the LG G7+, which is why I have been really hesitant to upgrade, but I think I finally have an option, although expensive, but Installments are a thing now for most devices in many places. Would you have any other recommendations? Something similar, full package, I really don't wanna skip on anything, mainly Camera and more important to me personally Audio.

@@nazhanabdulhamid5227 Speakers are great, screen is awesome (except for it's peak brightness) phone is slippery as hell, gaming performance also awesome, battery is ok, NFC activation is really smart and fast, just hold locking button for a second, and you ready to pay. 3.5 jack sound is meh, really mediocre, and camera results is on you completely (it's really good)

great review josh! discovered your channel through the headphone jack video you made. personally, i am going to wait for the 1 iv since it's been leaked by a reliable leaker that it'll use a new 50mp sensor. Sony seems to be the king of hardware right now and they really do listen to customer feedback, so i have my hopes up that the cameras will be significantly improved, not to mention the front camera will finally be getting love and changed to a sony made sensor instead of a Samsung made sensor. I also think the next gen 4k 120 screen will be more efficient and more importantly, brighter. and I'm sure they will bump the battery up. either way, this is all expectations I have based on what sony has done in the past, hopefully in a year from now I am not wrong haha. 7/29/21 - if anyone from the future reads this when the 1 IV is out, reply to this comment so I can be reminded of it please

Wow. Great review. You showed off all what this device is good at, and you didn't say "you should buy that other phone instead" like others have. I believe for what this device offers, the price is justified, and they're throwing in the XM3s free right now.

Great first phone review. Only suggestion (which may not be possible at the moment but hopefully down the road) is comparisons. So for example, buyers who like cameras love to see how the top 3-5 camera phones compare in side by side shots (including your opinion of them)

the best way to extend your phone's battery life is to keep it at around 50% at all times

@@yonkocommander5531 Sony doesn't need you to take care of it. It has the best batteries in the industry. It also comes with the best battery care algorithm in the business. Their batteries easily go 3 years before they begin to degrade. I have an XZ Premium that's almost going on 4 years and it still works and functions very similar like the day I bought it. No other phone brand for me lasts that long. Every other phone begins to degrade after 6 months - year. By year 2 it is clamoring to be replaced.

I'm a display and audio person first, but camera is also up there, so this one has been at the top of my list as a potential replacement for my S20. Thinking I'm gonna probably want to wait to take a serious look until at least it dips below a grand, though. Sony's don't tend to depreciate a ton, so by the time that happens who knows what the tech will look like on phones. Still a beast of a phone, though, and would absolutely consider it...at

Which seiko diver do you have, dude? Those things are sweet! I have a Seiko Astron and recently got a (cheaper) Seiko Prospex MM200 diver and its amazing! Loving it more than the astron. Btw i own the xperia 1 mark 2. Stellar phone! Love the audio capabilities, using it with my Campfire Dorado 2020. Not gonna get the 3 as my phone renewal cycle is 2 years - cant wait to see how next years mark 4 will be!

For those of us mostly into audio it's hard to find what we really want. I'd love a phone with the audio features of the LG V-series, but with the smaller footprint of an iphone 5, and without paying hundreds of extra dollars for a 4K screen and 13mp camera with 3 separate lenses since those aren't things that I value. Basically, I want a nice DAP with mobile data.

Btw it's not going to be better battery since you're not at 4 k all the time. You can set it to 1080p resolution if you want. If anything it would be screen size but it's not much of a difference to make it better battery wise

Great attempt on phone review man. Just pointing out: OLED isn't the reason why it is so dim. Samsung has the brightest panels on the market, be it OLED or LED or whatever. The reason of it being dim is because of 4k. Current tech is still not good in getting lights through so many tiny pixels.

No notch, great screen, good looking phone and premium materials. Those are all the features I care about. I was so hyped for the Zenfone 8, but 1080p screen killed it. This Sony is the only one that meets all I want. I already pre ordered it. I am basically paying extra for features I don't need, like you said, because it has the ones I do want. I don't care much for the camera or SD card. I just wished the pre order came with mx4 instead of the 3.

I would have hoped that since you're a photographer, you'd actually show how it is to use. The app and the photos. What are the limits? Can the headphone jack be used as a mic input? What are the features that when activated prevent us from using other features? How does the phone compare against competitors and an Alpha camera?

Hello good sir, I just wanted to say great review! I think you should try to get your hands on a rog phone 5. I never have had a better audio experience from a mobile phone.

The problem with the latest xperias are the front facing cameras and availablity. The selfies are ok for video calls or some quick selfies but if you make allot of selfies i would buy something else. The main features that are unique to the xperias are the 3,5 mm jack, sd card, 4k, 21:9, dvs and the dsee hx/ultimate. Got the 5ii now and ordered the 1iii for my wife. That will probably arrive at the end of the month😑

Good review 👍🙂,I consider this phone 🤳 a niche phone 📱, I had my Xperia 1iii for 3 months , really nice phone , good form factor , easy hold in the hands , , there is a lot of phones out there for $1200 ex. Samsung ultra 21 , iphone 12 pro max , it's really personal preference, all 3 phones are exceptional phones.

Probably my next phone. I need a good camera for work, I watch an insane amount of KZfaq and Netflix with both wired headphones and from the speakers. Battery life isn't a forefront for me

I do really want Sony but my draw back on this phone from before even until now is, the thermal throttle, heat problem and the major is the battery. Sony is a awesome phone with a good software, hopefully Sony step up and make a important on that said major flaws and issue. A great review wishing to see you more smartphone reviews, keep it up 👉👌👉.

unless you are running IEM or really efficient headphones you will still want an amp. because of the way integrated headphone amps are designed to handle voltage you will be unable to get all the dynamic range you want. it has become the norm that integrated audio circuits measure the impedance you connect to them and then decide the range and properties of the power it will deliver to that load. the headphones might be able to get very loud but the sound may carry that anemic feeling. for instance, I own a LG V50, from that series that got the quad dac, the signal is really clean, the best you will be able to find in a phone as far as i am aware, when I connect my HD660s, for my average track the volume step 42 out of 75 is as loud as I find confortable, so as you can see it still has room to get a lot louder , the problem is that unlike dedicated amps the integrated one will not let transducers suck as much power as they please. to be clear, they will still sound pretty good but if you are a demanding listener you will eventually realise the sound of the headphones could be lacking a bit of a punch

Worth it how tho? Except for sometimes handy 3.5mm jack and expendable storage, everything is worse than on other flagships?

@@NiohNiohYT no other flagships have 2160p OLED, stock Android (no bloatware/ads), no ugly notch or punch hole, great cameras developed by Alpha and Zeiss, bypass charging (means no battery heat and degradation while the charger powers the phone directly: perfect for long gaming sessions, long road trips with GPS use), and the list goes on. @@SonyEnthusiast nope, cameras are very bad, much worse than competitors, sony does not have 2160p screen, and even its higher resolution is *bad* - at no benefit you get lower fps in games and more battery usage. No notch? You mean no screen around the front camera? They literally took away gratis screen from you around the camera and you are happy about it? Camera is NOT developed by zeiss, and its again, worse than competition in every way (yes even with irrelevant manual mode), and so on
