Not here to defend them, but something I like is that compared to portal having one grain and reverb engine you can have up to 3 of each node in serial or parallel. The mod system is pretty robust as well as the pitch Shifter being pretty high quality, as well as a built in clipper. I don’t think those demos were that interesting either, but it’s great for making a lot of layered sounds Definitely demo everything, but when they approached me for making factory content I really liked it.

Shaperbox can only have one of instance of each effect. The curve editing is better than shaperbox in Beam. Also the routing is far more flexible. Shaperbox is also years old. They're going to be adding more FX and features to this.

It's such a weird take you guys have about this plugin. The interface is not only gorgeous but is easily the best representation of parallel/serial routing I've ever seen in any plugin. It makes ordering the processors a breeze. The processors are great. The granular engine can be a delay and even an audio arp.

i love the concept of beam, which is making complex parallel routing easy. i'm literally using bitwig because of that. but the lack of unique and outstanding effects is what made me feel a bit meh about it too. if you're right that they are going to add more nodes to this at some point it could become srsly good

I don't think $60 is a lot for just granular and reverb? I would just call it a 'space' plugin rather than a multi-effect hyperdimensional patcher field, or whatever their marketing buzzwords were.

i would say that portal did this but way better years ago but if im not mistaken i was doing monthly payments on portal for a long time... 60$ for portal that looks very nice doesnt sound bad. knowing that the company spent most of the budget on the visuals instead of making more modules for it doesnt speak well for the future of it though.

You could do that in your DAW -- yeah, and when I really want to create a unique signal flow, I fire up VCV Rack. It's got modules for pretty much anything. All kinds of ways to split a signal and subprocess the branches and modulate anything in the process. I didn't hear anything it was doing that I couldn't recreate in VCV Rack. And I can use VCV Rack in my DAW. The stupid visualizations of that plugin add zero musicality, just wasted processor cycles.

About Beam: You said it best at around 3 min, “If you close your eyes, you wouldn’t be as excited about it.” While this plugin LOOKS cool, I agree that there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of innovative audio modulation here unfortunately. Also, +1 for the Infiltrator node/module system idea with this-I’d also buy in if that were the case.

I bought my mom a very circular volleyball and net set coz she wanted a rebounder/trampoline for some ungodly reason. Okay maybe it's not circular, maybe it's spherical. I don't know if a high carbon steel volleyball is good yet though, I'll have to test it first.

granular is the next big wave the market seems to be following for whatever reason. i'm beginning to think they just listen to small but vocal pockets of the internet that convince them to put some sort of crap out. i keep getting recommended some sort of new & expensive boutique granular synth or something, but given price and being only granular, it makes me think who is buying these things and how are these small companies staying afloat? how are some of these companies able to focus on and only sell niche synth products? it's either hype or we really are entering into the era where music really does need & want that many sounds & engines. i mean technically at some point we get to the point where we have to stop because we've basically discovered every way to manipulate sound and we're still probably far away from that. at some point it for me it was "oh cool, i could use something with that kind of synthesis and that kind of synthesis" and always felt like you need something analog, something digital, something that does FM, something that does waves...but now we're just making every niche sound design tool there is. i do not feel like i need "granular" anything and it's probably just the type of the iceberg for what's to come

The only reason I use Deezer is for lossless quality reference tracks for my tunes. So I can understand my speaker response better for mixing and mastering my own tracks.

"we've got beam at home, dear". You could technically make most effects with a bunch of delays but what would be the point. The whole selling point of plugins is how you interact with the interface. Beam is one of the best because it makes FX routing ridiculously easy and flexible.

Nah totally get you. I just started dabbling with DAW and VST synths and have not created something consistent yet, far from calling anything "music". Beam is just beautified routing in your Softsynth / DAW. And when the base costs 99 bucks and any more pluggins extra? I just want to understand my routing options better than throwing money on a cutsy gimmick

Technically there are four or five effects in Beam because the grain node has a granular processor, pitch shifter, and a delay. I had a similar reaction. It is just a modular effects processor with only a few effects. I would be more interested if there was feedback and the pitch shifter + delay were separable . My YT feed was filled with all the hype videos.

I swear to god Patcher is the greatest thing in any DAW ever. I love it so much. You can make chains with like 30 plugins and only use up one mixer insert. You can put FX VSTs on the channel rack. You can do parallel processing without routing to another mixer track (or using sidechain with fruity send like I do. This way, you can mute the dry signal and still hear the wet signal only. If you route to the mixer track rather than sidechain with fruity send, when you mute the dry, you also mute the wet. But with Patcher this doesn't even matter). Its fucking nuts.

@HazyJ28 yep, shits crazy. Beam is garbage until they add something unique, just 60 dollars for visuals, you can recreate the entire plugin using other free plugins. Got Komplete 14 awhile back and have been using reaktor, which is like patcher on steroids( or max/msp).

Visual based, hype based marketing with no trial is sketchy for me. I agree that it can be a great effect, even better if they add more, but is just a beautiful interface right now. It might have improvements on workflow compared to making the chains yourself, but is not a gamechanger nor the "future" of whatever they say.

"BEAM" When every YT'ler makes a video about one plugin simultaneously, I'm usually curious. When it has this GUI, I hate it without further investigation. I understand, that the eye is listening too, but this OTT-GUI is mostly... always, just make-up for an average till ugly "face", beneath. I want to produce music and don't want to do a benchmarktest for CPU and GPU

Look at all the people who did soundpacks for this. It's like the vst version of an industry plant . It's good, but it uses multiple cores so check the specs, might not run so great on anything less than an i7. You can do the chains in other plugins like kh multipass or even tug multi effects for free. Or use a vst host like element or wave studio rack. Saying that the effects Beam has are really high quality and I like Cube, their other vst.

What the fuck. My 10 channel speakers have a dual RCA to 3.5mm cable, a remote control, some weird ass cable that for some reason has a silver cable and a copper cable, a weird ass font, wireless functionality, wireless charging, and it's too fucking difficult to unbox while trying to take a video of it, it's also a very odd green shade of orange. OH, and buttons (yes girls, I can press buttons, i am definitely not an incel).

Personally, I'm quite exhausted by plugins these days. I'm not going to be suckered into buying plugins I really don't need. GAS is bas news - it's an addiction. Small amounts of granular is fine (and I mean *small* amounts) but more than a little is just nauseating!

More than anything, it doesn’t help visualize the creative process, if anything, it adds to the whole cluster of modules outside of the plugin that need to exist in order to make the workflow any better, it sounds like they want to be a DAW and we laughing cause we know it’ll never get there, realistically.

Also on Deezer most of my favorite electronic artist have their full catalog on there. Unlike Spotify or iTunes where its usually missing a few. Pretty much the one thing I don't really like about Deezer is their radio algorithm sucks ass. Also not like in defense of that 12 month policy but I listen to a lot of underground bass music and none of the small artist have been taken off that I've seen so far.
