San Quentin State Penitentiary is the state prison in California, located near the city of San Rafael. Opened in July 1852, it is the oldest prison in the state.
Originally, Black Dolphin was a prison (Ostrog) for those sentenced to life in prison in forced labor since at least 1745. After the suppression of the Pugachev rebellion in 1773, the prison was upgraded to the deportation and confinement of thieves.
The São Paulo House of Detention, popularly known as Carandiru because it is located in the homonymous neighborhood of the city of São Paulo, was a penitentiary located in the north of São Paulo. It was inaugurated on April 21, 1920 and its construction is by the architect-engineer Samuel das Neves.
When it opened in 1956, the Tacumbú prison was designed to hold only 800 prisoners, but its capacity was soon increased to 1,500 prisoners. However, in 2020, it was home to 4231 inmates.
