lol at the subscriber who hit the dislike button within 5 minutes of a 15 minute CAD tip video going up on a CAD tip channel. Why bother subscribing to a channel if you don't like the content, it boggles my mind. If you don't like long unnecessarily bloated introductions you're subbed to the wrong channel bud, it ain't gonna change so you best be off! Toodles!

this man is one of the best -- if not the best -- instructor of Inventor I have yet come across. he talks a bit fast, and after watching a boatload of his videos I find myself beginning to talk like him....hahahah the internet will always have trolls, buddy, don't let the rent any space in your head. you are the man.

You didn't talk about projecting from one part to another, while in an assembly, which is very common IMO. I love what you do here, keep it up. Cheers.

Excellent stuff as usual - I always learn something new. I wish that I had explored application options earlier. Keep 'em coming.

HA! I never expected such a quick and thorough response to my confused newbie whining (let alone an entire video) but wow - thank you so much for this! "burning the edge onto your sketch" really helped me understand this. Coming from the artsy side of things, I am still having a very hard time adjusting my thinking to such a highly-technical program but your teaching has really helped immensely (if there is such a thing as "techie-dyslexia", I am pretty sure I have a black belt in that). If there was a way to super-subscribe to your channel, I would be all over that for sure. Thank you again, buddy!

Really, i was thinking i have mastered the use of the project geometry, but i chose to watch this vid. In fact, i just know that "break link" function! Good lord i followed this channel. Please make a video about dynamic simulation! that would be a big help. Thank you!

what is Project Geometry's name? i didn't get that... :]

Frank here. Beg to differ about having to project an edge in order to dimension. When in dimension mode, edges will auto project.
@Neil3D7 жыл бұрын
+fjnagle2nd I said that to explain the purpose of project geometry. Towards the end I explain and demonstrate that it auto projects when dimensioning.

Is there an easy way to turn off the Projected Geometry so it won't show up in an assembly. I usually just pop over to the part and turn it off but sometimes it is more hassle than other times. Just hoping for a shortcut if there is one.

I have ? for you TFI. How do you apply a free form mesh to a face of which was used used as the base for the free form mesh?

Is there a way to disable projection of hidden edges. I often work on very complex parts. When projecting in this setting, inventor often selects an edge I am not seeing and not willing to project. It would be great if I could revolve the model, see the edge I want to select and then project it. Essentially I want to disable projecting hidden edges. Projection in Fusion 360 is kinda like that. Thanks for the great content!

Hello! I am a student in Sweden and my favourite subject is of course CAD, although me and my teacher seem to have different opinions when it comes to the model tree, I feel that it's much easier to have as many features as possible in the model tree because it makes edition the part at a later date easier than if you had to go dig up sketches. My teacher thinks I should put as many of my features as possible in sketches because it makes the model tree look nice and tidy. What is your opinion on this topic?

Is there a way to make the reference geometry automatically make lines into construction lines?
@Neil3D7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, it's on the IdeaStation though here so feel free to vote it up forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/project-geometry-as-construction/idi-p/4827911
@alejandrosimsags7 жыл бұрын
Yes, just pre-select "construction" command before you start to project geometry. Doing this will project construction lines/curves. It also works with "project cut edges" command. "Project to 3D sketch" does not make a constuction line during 2D sketch enviroment but it works in 3D sketch enviroment "Project Curve to Surface" , "Intersection Curve" and "Include Geometry" commands. Maybe we need a preset button to activate-deactivate contruction line under "Autoproject Edges for Sketch creation and edit" in the app options. Hope this helps :)

Hi Neil, I was wondering what happened to your twitch account? seems most of the videos have gone! (down to 2 from ~12) When I started following, I went back and watched old ones and they were quite entertaining! Also whats happening with the 3D connection prize? Cheers, Richard
@Neil3D7 жыл бұрын
+richendes I think the videos on twitch only stay up for a set time before they disappear, I just haven't had time recently to live stream and with only 20-30 people showing up it wasn't really something I could justify doing regularly! So the give away is still going to happen, given that I was going to pick someone from the twitch stream I think I'll instead pick someone who followed my twitch and do it that way instead of being a live giveaway. But it's still definitely happening!
@richendes7 жыл бұрын
Ah fair enough. I've never been able to watch them live anyway, being from Australia. Either way, thanks for all your effort at producing all these videos, I really appreciate your content and laid back style!

TFI, i want to bend an airfoil which is a sheet metal work , since its a curved line which is 16mm inside offset from the edge . i have been told its not possible and it can only be done in CATIA. can i please send you the Autocad file and you import it to inventoR and show me how its done . my colleague had managed to do it in catia i could even send you the .DWG file . i aint sure if you understand me or not ? Please reply me . you got my subscription today and a like too and as well comment .

I don't really get what you would like to do but you can use the Bend part command on sheet metal parts, too. You can find it on 3D Model tab->Modify->Bend part.

What about reference geometry taken from an assembly.. That one is a real pain the *SS to master. Keep finding broken links when the lads try to cut corners once they realize they forgot something midway thru assembly. those pesky greenhorns try and try but they will never foil me!!
@tdtrecordsmusic7 жыл бұрын
I would like to bump Mr. Browns request for assembly references !!! Something along the lines of > Do's and Don't's of assembly references < I keep coming to a place where I based a part on 2 parts; then one or more needs to change (or just flat out deleted&restarted) and it just gets messy. Typically the mess happens when i'm 10 parts in and realize that i've modeled myself into an assembly which doesn't do well with major changes. Perhaps 'adaptivity' is the real *SS muncher... AND Neil you are the one to do the job!!! your waffling on about real world situations is uber helpful!! No one else goes into the depth you do !!
@richendes7 жыл бұрын
This is the point where I give up on project/assembly references, and instead link all my parts to a spreadsheet with parameters! Change in the spreadsheet and all the linked Inventor files automatically update! not sure how well this works with very large assemblies tho, as I've only done small assemblies with this method (less than 300 parts)..... Using assembly reference I had the same problem of always having breaks as soon as you want to make the smallest of changes
@tdtrecordsmusic7 жыл бұрын
aww, don't give up dood !! I think many of our woes **might** be caz there are far less erroneous actions than plausible solutions and near zero tutorials go over the "ya, don't try that even though it seems obvious that it should work!" o'reilly / lynda /etc ,, hardly(if at all) touch the 'don'ts'. thats not their job. They cover very essential points. Its people like TFI/Neil that can guide us through the real shit. For the people who need to do more than mimic... Who are already past the gate.... Anyways ... I haven't done the spreadsheet thing yet. Is there an advantage over than just using the parameters ? Isn't it the same thing, just a different place ? ? I must point out though that reference dimensions is likely a topic requiring its own attention. Whereas, the topic Mr. Brown and I were requesting is on the subject of reference geometry. I know at some level there are similarities and I fully respect your contribution. Plus there are many situations which the correct path to take is using shared dimensions/parameters !! However, that is totally a different situation than changing the actual geometry of a part / removing a feature only to discover, ya I referenced that somewhere!! shiitake !! Changing an extruded square to a circle. changing angled lines to flat lines got me once... If we are all speaking open, I must admit I have been wondering if using assembly level sketches would help the situation of cross part association/unresolved references. Kind of like a 3rd party linker thing. Could probably use some basic sketch elements and when needs change just mod certain stuffz. On the same token I have been wondering whats up with using assembly planes. When are they preferred ? When will they fail ? Hopefully its as obvious as why i prefer to cook eggs on a frying pan rather than my GF's stomach.. caz she only likes to get oiled up 3 weeks out of the month. Sure, I could spend the time and do a bunch of mock ups and figure it out. However, if someone has been modeling for a long time and wishes to share... That saves the world loads of redundant human effort
