Welcome back fellow aircraft builders and aviation enthusiasts! My old 8-gallon Harbor Freight air compressor couldn't take the abuse of drilling hundreds of holes in rapid succession. It was a great little machine for the last 14 years, but I was asking too much of it for this project.
While rapidly match-drilling the horizontal stabilizer skin to the skeleton, the compressor was kicking on about every 30-60 seconds, and it eventually caused an electrical problem (probably the start capacitor). I don't have time to fix it right now, since I need my compressor for things other than the plane project. This video details how and why I selected this new compressor from Home Depot:
Husky C302H 30-gallon 155PSI Portable Air Compressor:
www.homedepot.c...
After performing the 20-minute break-in procedure, I changed the oil to a premium synthetic blend. The original factory oil was DIRTY after the break-in. I also re-plumbed the condensate drain at the bottom, as the factory one is nearly inaccessible. Should run like a champ for the duration of the project (and hopefully much longer).
I have more tips & tricks videos on the way, including construction of the horizontal stabilizer, elevator and flaperons! Many hours of video to cut together. Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching, and check out my blog at gregsplane.blog... to follow my progress!

*After years of hauling around a large,💫 **allabout.wiki/PORTER** heavy, loud dewalt air compressor (that ironically was advertised as quiet, supposedly 78dB), I bought this. Facepalm. While it is not ‘silent’, I find myself chuckling every time I use it, sparing all my neighbors the terror of my former compressor. I use for inflating tires, impact wrench, finish nailers. Absolutely love it. And I store it under the garage sink in a 24” cabinet. I paired with a coil 1/2”, instead of a my former 50’ 5/8” hose that I had to lug across the yard from the shed, unpleasantly uncoil.... this little guy is light and portable; just a joy. Impact wrench is still capable of easing lug bolts, flywheel bolts, crank pulleys... just allow for a tiny bit of recovery now and then.*

I have the Husky 30 GAL 175 psi Oil-less. This does work great for a portable 110v unit but if the compressor dies I will get a twin-cylinder oiled compressor. I will get a lot of years out of it no matter what. Harbor Freight carries a twin-cylinder cast compressor at a reasonable cost. The conversion is basic and simple. Being oil-less does not worry me knowing I can make a pump change so easily. I have 3 compressors now. The Husky, a Campbell Hausfeld 20 gal which is now over 20 years old and still does the job, and a twin-cylinder with the motor that both came off a 200-gallon tank. It was given to me as the tank rusted out on the previous owner. I adapted it to an 80-gallon tank, @ 30 amps 220v stationary in my shop. He told me it was new in 1962. I did a calculation on the unit and it has a cfm of 22 with a 1/2" pipe. So like I said, easy to repair. So was it disposable? Only if you don't like repairing and wasting good equipment. In short, if I got 10 years out of the oil-less Husky my repair would be easy, cheap, and better than the twin-cylinder unit he's showing. The choice is yours but I like to save a buck and look at the long haul. Just remember, tanks usually don't go bad. That 30 amp unit was old and always outside exposed to the elements. You can get a motor or a pump that will exceed the manufactures original unit. As long as the pop-off pressure release, and the pressure power switch is good not much can go wrong. The 30amp unit has now been being used for over 15 years with no issues. Great video, good information but I find on these videos that usually the person making the video does have a prejudiced opinion validating the one they purchased and own. Guilty, I do it as well at times for my own reasons, but I am just opening the door for others to understand, ( throw-away ) doesn't apply, Replace defective parts for better somewhere down the road as you always have options to get the most out of your purchase. Most times a repair is cheaper than replacing the unit with a new one, sometimes not, but keep the good parts for a later repair of something else. How many times in my 62 years have I thrown something away only to find out 6 months to a year later I needed it and it was a good part. I do not throw out the potentially good stuff. Have an awesome day!

THanks for the video. A couple of quick questions, if you have time.... How often do you need to change the oil? How difficult is it to change the oil? Finally, how has it held up over time? Once again, I'm grateful for your time.
@GregsZenithSTOLCH750

I changed the factory oil after the first break-in (20 mins of use) and haven't changed it since because I used full synthetic and the oil is still clean in the sight glass. There are various recommendations for intervals for this type of compressor, and it depends on the shop environment, use and type of oil. The owner's manual doesn't specify any interval. I've seen recommendations for 50 hours, 100 hours, 200 hours, once per year, etc. This compressor has held up well for me and is about to get even more use. However, it's still used rather intermittently. Since it doesn't come with an hour meter, I think I may consider installing one and doing oil changes at 100-hour intervals. I would guess I'm somewhere around 50-75 total hours of use in 4 years. With full synthetic, I'm less worried about the oil going bad over time (though, I'm no oil expert). When I use it, it's hard use. Lots of cycling due to rapid riveting & drilling, followed by long periods of not being used. I have seen no color change in the oil, for whatever that's worth, since I did the first oil change. Changing the oil is easy - just drain and refill - but you'll want to rig up a funnel and hose to use at the drain plug because it'll spill down the tank.

A number of things on the air compressor. First, a drill typically takes about 4cfm to work, and if the compressor head cannot deliver that, then it will not be adequate. 2 to 3 times that is needed, so 8 to 12 cfm is needed. That equates to a 3 - 3.5 hp unit. Secondly, the tank capacity is the 'reserve run time' that allows the compressor to shut down and cool off. The greater the tank capacity, the longer it will be idle. Thirdly is the power source that EVERYBODY gets wrong. Breakers should not pop when starting the compressor, and it is usually because they are sized far too small in the first place. You need to remember the inrush starting requirement - a motor looks like a dead short to the power line when not turning. The breaker sized (maximum) is spelled out by NEC 430.52 which is: 2.5 times the nameplate full load amps times the service factor (typically 1.15), then select the size breaker less than that number. The husky is only 5.2 cfm @90 and is 1.6 hp at 120v Soooo, the breaker required: 28 amps (max), nearest standard would be 20 Amp.
@amp12345amp
@amp12345amp 6 жыл бұрын
To Paul Moffat. Thank you sir. Very valuable information you have given in your post. One question I have though is if the max voltage draw is 28 amps why wouldn't you need to install a 30 amp breaker? I am considering buying one of these Husky or HF compressors and will probably need to hire an electrician to install a dedicated breaker for the compressor and want to make sure I don't undersize the breaker I need.

The Harbor Freight 29 gallon is two (2) cylinder. It is an in-line 2 cylinder as opposed to the V2. Hence, at first glance it appears to be a single cylinder but it is actually 2 cylinder. Look between the cooling fins and you can see that it is 2 cylinders. HF is rated 150psi and Husky rated at 155psi. HF is 5.9 CFM @ 90 PSI, 7.3 CFM @ 40 PSI. Husky is 6.2 SCFM at 40 psi, 5.3 SCFM at 90 psi. HF has a slight edge in "advertised" air delivery. As of 12/1/16 HF is $339 and Husky is $399. Warranty HF 90 days - Husky 2yrs.

First; Thank-you for the info. I'm retired (3 yrs) so despite my half of a smallish two car garage, woodworking looks like a good hobby. I've been looking at compressors online and alas your video convinced me that the 30gal Husky (oiler vs no oil) versus a California Air Tools unit (no vert?) will suit my needs (overkill?). I checked out the "Zenith Aircraft Co" site and saw the STOL CH750 you're building, Kewl. I noticed the "Cruiser" has a bigger rudder aero gear shrouds and I'm guessing the ailerons, elevators are also bigger, higher HP engine and larger fuel tank (reserve?) for higher altitude, longer range (aka: "Cruiser") flights. Are you a Commercial or Military Pilot? If Commercial, have you interacted with ATC ("Kennedy Steve" / ground) at JFK airport? Thank-you for the time and keep up the work on "Zelda". ;-)
@GregsZenithSTOLCH750
@GregsZenithSTOLCH750 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comments. I doubt you will need to build a noise shroud for this air compressor...it is really rather quiet (until you drain the moisture...that part is very loud). I'd wait until you actually get one and try it out before deciding to build an enclosure. I'm thinking of plumbing an outdoor drain for it. I have been very pleased with it so far. Quick to charge up and holds air with no "bleed off." I plan to put a line dryer on it at some point, but haven't gotten around to it. The Zenith Cruzer is the same size airplane with the same horsepower range. It uses a vertical fin with separate hinged rudder. Those two assemblies together are larger than the Zenith "all-flying" rudder on the STOL. The all-flying rudder is a single piece rudder/fin combo that moves together. It is more effective at compensating for crosswinds and therefore doesn't need to be as big. The ailerons are actually slightly shorter on the Cruzer. The elevator is thinner, but about the same width and length. Fuel tanks are the same, and both airplanes can accommodate the same engines. The Cruzer removes the leading edge slats on the wings and removes one of the wing struts on each side. The wheel pants, plus the other drag-reducing things I mentioned give it less drag and better cruise performance on the same horsepower. However, all that comes at a price: reduced STOL capability. The Cruzer is meant to fly in and out of airports (mainly), whereas the STOL is meant to get in and out of wherever you want. Both airplanes have an option for extended range fuel tanks, but the standard capacity is 24 gallons (extended range tanks add 6 gallons to the total capacity, which equates to another 1-1.5 hours of flight time, depending on the engine). I am just a private pilot and have never flown outside of Michigan (yet). I am making some new friends with my channel, though, so I may be traveling to other states and Canada once the plane is finished!

Capacity is not the most important aspect of an air compress (don't get me wrong, I do like decent Capacity) but the most important is CFM ... this is good reading www.vmacair.com/blog/many-cfm-need-run-air-tools-air-tools-cfm-usage-chart/ for drilling you need good cfm - I would look into units that give 11 cfm at 90 psi - I have the same Husky you have now as a back up, but my 220 volt one give me 3 times the CMF and double the tank Capacity

The old compressor was too small to make it worth the effort of plumbing it as a storage tank. Plus, it was 15-some years old and I felt better just taking it out of service. I'm sure it would have been fine, but old compressor tanks can be dangerous and this one spent a lot of time in a high condensation environment. The only larger HF model is the 60-gallon, which runs on 220, isn't portable and is twice the price. I needed a portable one and one that runs on 110 for now. The Husky model is an oil sump model and very quiet. I've had it for 1.5 years now and I love it. I'll never buy an oilless compressor. Thanks for watching.

I'm thinking about picking up the Husky for 269, how's it doing so far for you? Any quirks or problems so far? You probably killed the start capacitor on the old HF model, you can find them for like 7-8 bucks in the McMaster catalog, just have to know what to look for. It draws too many amps at start so it won't turn and will flip the breaker. Might be worth the 7-8 bucks to get it started and recoup a hundred on craigslist.
@GregsZenithSTOLCH750
@GregsZenithSTOLCH750 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm fairly certain it's the start capacitor. I haven't been able to find the specific one it takes because it has a mounting bolt molded into the bottom of it...still looking around. The Husky is running great. Riveted for a solid hour with it and it only kicked on once. Did my sprinkler system and my travel trailer and several other things with it...seems to be a good machine. If you do get one, be sure to change the oil after the break-in. The factory oil was really dirty after the 20-min break in. Re-plumbing the condensate drain cost me another $40 or so in fittings/piping, but it was well worth it. The stock one is all but inaccessible unless you tip the compressor up.

After your first reply, I thought you'd found a much better deal on the Husky 302H than I did! But at $269, I suspected it was a different model, too. If you're looking for a really light-duty, occasional use machine, you could get by with an oilless. I would definitely stay away from the oilless models, even from the higher $$ brands, if you plan on regular use. Two biggest reasons: Oilless are really, really loud, and they wear out much, much faster. My old HF model (oiled) for $100 was a great machine, and I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I just needed more capacity than my old one could provide, and the Husky in the size/range I was looking for is a better machine.

I can tell you, that Husky I bought is so quiet, it is an absolute pleasure to have in the shop.

Most electric drills that spin 3200+ RPM are big, bulky and expensive. Drills that spin more slowly don't produce clean holes in thin aircraft sheet metal. If you have compressed air anyway (like for rivet guns, etc.), an air drill is the way to go. The little Harbor Fright machine just wasn't big enough for the kind of sustained drilling and riveting I'm doing for this project. I would have killed it anyway, once I got to a lot of riveting. I've had no problems with the Husky.
