The problem with that is there is no whistle after a fair catch. If you hit a guy who signaled a fair catch, that’s a penalty even though there’s no whistle.

Making body signals that players corresponding with a fair catch. Ybe way he raised his shoulders then being relaxed for the catch to the opponents, it registered as a fair catch.

Remember the QB slide rule that was changed this year because of the Pitt QB faking a slide then running into the end zone? The defender stopped because you’re trained to not tackle or hit the sliding defenseless player. This is the same scenario but more dangerous. The punt returner was standing still and the defenders showed good sportsmanship by not railing him. Should be a dead play

I think Jack Pardee did that when he coached University of Houston. The next time the other team punted, the punter kicked real high but only 20 yards, the returner signaled for a fair catch and was hit by several players and the resulting injuries ended his football career.

For those confused..... A returner can signal a fair catch when a kick or punt is in the air headed his way. To do so, he needs to extend one arm completely above his helmet and then wave it from side to side. If he does this clearly while the ball is in the air, a referee who is near him will see it and then yell to the other players in the area that a fair catch is in effect. The returner must do this full extension and wave of his arm from one side to the next to successfully signal the fair catch. He can't simply put a hand above his helmet.
