Gardening with disabilities has always been a challenge and one that we get asked about all the time. We went on a hunt and stumbled across this amazing product called the vegepod. The raised bed kit is simple to put together and can be found here: amzn.to/2YfyQrq Check out our new clothing line! http:www.freshpickedapparel.com

Having Multiple Sclerosis, I've been making my gardens out of free, and chemical free, heat treated pallets. I cut the pallets up and build boxes to be 3 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet deep.

Love it. I’m an occupational therapist living in New Zealand. I saw your video this morning and thought that would be cool for some of my clients who have goals getting back to their dearly loved gardens but can no longer access. If only we had them over here. I then went out to my local garden centre to get some shade cloth and sitting there on display was an actual veggie pod (same brand) I had a close look at it and it is a quality product and so easy with the self watering system. I will be recommending it to others. 👍👍👍

Thank you for making this video. I was lucky a friend came to my house with some of his friends. One had of the girls started calling the group to see how I have my tomatoes and other things that were on my balcony. They called me the following week and asked me, do you have space for a raised bed? I said yes and he told me that they want to make me one. I was so surprised and happy. They came and started working I remember that I had lots of cement blocks and I asked if they could use them, and they said great. They took the height of my wheelchair and today I have a 30 ft. long and around 2 ft long.

So thoughtful of you to consider the limitations of others, Luke! I think it would be interesting to plant a couple of dwarf tomatoes to see how they do in the vegepod. I see there are lots of suggestions for herbs, but maybe there is room for a couple of the dwarf tomatoes as well, see if there is enough depth for them. That Geneva just gets cuter and cuter! Such a sweet girl!

I did a container garden last year. I live in a small oilfield town in the Texas panhandle. I used old chemical barrels. They had methanol and acidsoap in them. It wasn't hard to cut them and wash them out. Best part, they were free. When I was setting it up, I was still recovering from a motor vehicle accident a few months prior. Getting rear-ended at highway speed doesn't feel too good. I was also a year into being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Seems to be pretty aggressive for me. Knees are shot, a couple fingers are already curving and took about 8 month for it to be in my back from the wreck. But I didn't have any issues with the chemicals in the barrels messing with the plants. Just used a strong dish soap and a green scrub pad to clean them. This year, I'm doing a bigger garden and I'm using the same barrels. I picked up some that had hydrochloric acid in them. They ain't completely empty, so I won't use them this year. But I have plenty to use that had the same chemicals in the barrels as last year. I also have access to 500gal totes that can be used for a raised bed (also free). If someone goes the route that I did, be aware of the chemicals that was in them. I work in the oilfield, so I know. You can Google the name or the UN # if you're not sure. It can be a cheap way to get a garden set up, but you must be aware of the risk of chemical residues. I was limited on money, so I had to go a cheap route. If you're around feed yards or horse pens, it's a good way to get manure, free or cheap. Think outside the box if you're looking to save money

I love my Veggiepod! Even with it full I was able to move it around. In the Fall-Spring we used to grow lettuce and tons of radishes. We have mid Winters but you can buy a plastic cover to insulated for cold winters. I just removed my cilantro and lettuce because it bloated and added peppers, a few green onions, small tomatoes and trying an eggplant plant this year. I have a small one and I love it. Last summer I grew four peppers plants.

That looks great for the wheelchair bound person. The guy on Self Sufficient Me uses tall galvanized containers that work great for him & his wife. They both have bad backs, so the containers come up to waist high. The company that makes them has recently started selling those here in the US and are very reasonably priced and supposedly very easy to put together. They're not nearly as fancy as that vegepod, though.

Extremely valid critique and well applied - Hope Vegapod people take this on board as it is a popular and ingenious idea - most folk plant brassicas, lettuce etc but the guy in UK used his for planting out seedlings as he had no greenhouse - worked brilliantly and really wish this company well - Thanx for your informative upload! Planting would depend on if you want it for your use or if you are trying to show how much variety one raised bed could give a person. Honestly for this year to encourage others I think a well planned variety patch would be awesome. Many people need an excuse to just get outside. Also with the crazy weather food prices are going to be horrible this year, getting others interested might be their saving grace. Thank you very much for showing this!

I do like these. But for the cost I can buy a full sized greenhouse kit from Amazon. Many permanently disabled people don’t have this much disposable income, even if married to a working spouse, even if they’re receiving benefits. Since it seems to be all plastic, I don’t understand the price point. It’s a shame that garden accessibility is such an ignored product category. Perhaps prices would be more affordable if there were more innovations, more choices in the marketplace. I do appreciate you caring about this topic/issue & taking the time to find the most affordable, quality option in the States to demo for us. Your efforts on presenting & bringing awareness to garden accessibility are very much appreciated. Perhaps more folks like you getting the word out, will inspire positive change in the retail gardening equipment industry. Thank you again!

Over $550 after you buy the larger one and the base? Yikes. Do a little DIY or find someone to help you to cut some Blue water barrels lengthwise. Build a 2x4 treated base. You could make 8 of them for that cost if you buy the barrels retail. Even more than that if you find someone selling them used. If you go this way you could make a well sized garden for way less and get the soil you need for the money you saved. I would fill the bottom part of the barrels with pea gravel then put some screen on top of that then add your soil. Great concept but I feel they are taking advantage of their target demographic at that cost.

Right. I was already thinking it would be MUCH cheaper and basically the same product to get one of those metal platform bed frames ($50-$100 for twin/twin-xl size) and some plastic tote boxes to set up on it. Also concerned those feet on the veggie pod will sink into the dirt they're standing on once it's filled with heavy soil. Probably some upside-down frisbies under each foot would be a good investment. I think it may be designed to stand on a hard surface, like a patio, more for urban gardening.

I think it's awesome that you are brainstorming ideas for people facing disabilities, Luke. But I agree, this is super expensive, especially when you consider many of us facing disabilities also face financial hurdles as well. Rebekah, that's a really good idea to repurpose a metal box spring stand to support grow beds. I'm using Walmart shopping bags that are really big (they fill a laundry basket which I'm using to keep the water from dripping onto my wooden floors). I'm trying to think of a way to support them off the wooden deck so it doesn't get damaged. That's a good possibility if I am not able to get my brother (the carpenter) to make me some wooden staging. (This time of year is always super busy for him).

Well, hub is a carpenter and can make from used free posts and free pallets. If someone is disabled, they often cannot work so can't afford something pricey. And, there are so many DIY channels and/or articles online that if you don't know how to put it together you can find out - and/or have friends help. Disabilities are so varied. Hub makes it so I can stand w/o bending over - my issue is I need to stand w/o bending over and not sit and having to have help to get up. Underneath goes all my tubs with supplies or bags and other supplies.

It's $399.00 PLUS about $159.00 for the stand so that's $558.00 and that's a lot of scratch. I would consider it if it were $150.00 to $200.00 and included the stands. I'm looking at it and thinking I could make it myself with PVC and maybe, dish bins for less than a hundred. It's a great idea and I garden both in ground and pots. I made self-watering or wicking pots out of 12 gallon tubs that have rope handles for less than $10 each. I do have a bad back and this raised bed setup is attractive but I don't think the trays would last long enough to pay for itself.

The cheapest and I think even the best quality raised bed you can do is by buying 2' x 8' galvanized metal sheets (which range from 12 dollars per 8' section to 17 depending on the time of year and location I noticed) and building a frame around them (there are videos online on how to build them, varying qualities depending on your limitations or if you have a family member or handyman who can help you out to build them and their limitations in tools and capabilities as well). Then once you have them built you can have them raised up as needed on top of beddings or even 2 x 6 underframming or give or take on how you need them raised. Also looking on craigslist for old and used galvanized metal roofing sheets and wood can cut the cost way down as well as hitting up the home depot discount wood bins which can save 70% on some decent dimensional wood. Also the wood can be found at home depot usually 70% off pile for warped and twisted one but honestly you don't need straight or even decent boards to get a good garden bed or support up), then filling them in with sand then your soil mix on top. and then you can run run your drips right into them via the branch lines. Also another example of a project I just built yesterday was 6' tall and 4' wide gate for my main garden I am finishing up with nothing but discounted wood and paint and it looks great and the total cost 20 dollars worth of discounted wood and its not perfect and super duper rustic but its kind of what I go for with my personal builds (+ another 25 bucks in hardware though which includes a spring and handles and other accessories)

A couple of things. From my experience of strip/reassembly of machines, it's a great help to put all the nuts, bolts etc in containers like icetrays or tiny zipseals. And have a small table next to you to store that sort of thing. Second, do you think pantyhose would work to act as a filter without impacting the seal of the fixture? Third, would someone be able to build it while sitting down? Especially once the walls are done - could they reach in? Also how awkward would it be to carry the box? Finally, your helper is adorable and it's wonderful that you're working with their attention span instead of being impatient

I think you should fill it with a wide blend of different herbs, seems like the fastest way to get your money's worth out of it, and its easy access for when you want fresh herbs for cooking.
