Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am recreating the Praying Mantis Experimental Machine Gun Carrier. It was a British invention designed to be able to lift the machine guns 11 feet in the air to be able to shoot over obstacles from behind cover. The problem was it was very small and difficult to drive. The operators had to lay down on their chests in order to fit in the vehicle, and driving like that over bouncy terrain made them motion sick. The project was eventually abandoned, but today I am reviving it!

You should try making the "Stipa-Caproni", also known as "The Flying Barrel". It was an Italian experimental aircraft which did it's first flight in 1932 It might be a bit "vanilla" or tame compared to the other builds you've recreated, but I still feel like it could be interesting. Oh and instead of Trailmakers, you could maybe try Scrap Mechanic with the Wings Mod?

Am i the only one who feels that this tank could of actually been good in war fare if it was just a bit bigger? Like if crew was actually in the body of the tank and the arm had only the gun and electronics in it, firing in cover is a huge advantage.
@Raziel7888
@Raziel7888 2 жыл бұрын
You gotta imagine they thought of that right? i mean they built the prototype like this saw its problem, n didnt try n fix them. I know metals were a very scarce material in the war, and im sure working tanks were too, but if they had just retro fitted an actual tank with the turret system... Easy to say that in 2022 tho, we have more hindsight, and technology now than they had then
@verrueckteriwan
@verrueckteriwan 2 жыл бұрын
Not really, the problem would be that you still can only mount small arms on the turret and the arm itself has to be rather lightweight, or tipping over would be a constant threat, also try to imagine being stuck in that tank in case of a fire, you would be sitting in a chimney. The whole Idea of it on the other hand was later used in tanks with an Oscillating turret. The idea there was, that you can look over obstacles without exposing much of your tank since the cannon could be mounted very high up in the turret (examples of these concepts is the AMX-13)
@pcenero
@pcenero 2 жыл бұрын
this is basically mecha if an engineer took a hundred passes simplifying it for production (removing unnecessary joints, replacing feet with treads, etc. etc.) just before realizing they'd be better off designing a tank.
@yayeetmeoffacliff4708
@yayeetmeoffacliff4708 2 жыл бұрын
@@verrueckteriwan actually, oscillating turrets were designed for early autoloaders. Since carousel loaders havent been invented yet (in use rn in Russian T64 - T14 series of tanks), they had to find a workaround. Autoloaders at the time needed to be in line with the gun to load. Basically, the whole turret turned up/down, the ammo would be in line with the gun. (Unlike more conventional tanks at the time)
@verrueckteriwan
@verrueckteriwan 2 жыл бұрын
@@yayeetmeoffacliff4708 That is true, they had drums (or rather magazines that had to be swapped out once fired), but the role they had was scouting and engaging tanks without having a high silhouette (there was a video where they showed one in the french farmlands, peeking over a stone wall and engaging a target)
@Petq011

Yep, if you did the version with separate driver and gunner you'd be able to hook the controller directly to the gunner's seat and the gunner would be able to fine-tune the angle of the arm with "W/S".

Hey scrapman, my suggestion for this series is the MIAS/MORAS mini tank. Its concept is a machine gun on tank tracks, the driver had to crouch walk behind the little tank while it drove. Also a nice addition would be bob to walk behind it.

they could have made it possible to deploy a person inside when needed from the inside but only when not driving. meaning when it's time to shoot you place yourself where you need to be and lift up with it... it would have made it larger in size as well but honestly that's not a big deal as it would be smaller than most tanks
@HalfWolf2
@HalfWolf2 2 жыл бұрын
Seems like a pretty effective and inexpensive andti infantry device, against other tanks it wouldn't stand a chance for a couple reasons, lack of power, lack of armor, etc. If another tank saw it, it would probably blast the turret off as well as the drivers head with it's main gun or even maybe penetrate the turret with it's mgs

The driver and gunner are below the gun, and the arm has much more control than Scrapman showcased with his design. The bigger problem with this vehicle was literally everything else had to be solved before that. Within the opportunities provided by our current technology, I would make proportionally smaller turret arms mounted on a larger body.

Scrapman, there is a way to make tank steering with only 3 engines and no buttons, just vanilla seat controls. One engine just does basic forward and reverse while the other two just cancel out the forwards motion if turning while going forwards or speed up the reverse when going backwards of either side. That control setup might have made adding fine control too the boom lift easier.
