As someone who's been into Minecraft modding since the game's inception, I can't believe someone was able to recreate Finite Liquid in the modern game!

It's amazing it's taken this long for a finite water mod to come back. From memory the old finite water only applied to pools, the sea was normal source blocks. The old one had rain accumulation though.

They could add conservation of water; when water spread so thin it disappeared then the game will count up how much has gone and eventually it will rain and all water that has been removed from the world will fall out of the sky again. To make rain actually happen sometimes though they would have to make it so water next to blocks like soil would slowly drain away.

I feel like you never really think about how water makes no sense, so it's interesting how changing that would break almost everything that you're used to normally seeing. This breaks almost every mob farm, if you mlg bucket you're pretty sure to loose the water you used, speedrunners can't build nether portals, you can't stop yourself from drowning by blocking off the leak, and so much more. Also there should be a naturally occurring water spring block that would provide infinite water
@dasmilyshelf6999

Yep. This mod should be added into vanilla, but not without a spring block that acts as an infinite water source
@MrDoboz

a spring block? no. A wet bedrock block, basically an aquifer? Yes! With limited capacity tho. Infinite water just makes no sense, and especially an infinite source above y=0 would be able to cause disasters. Like I mean you put it on the top of a mountain and it would try to flood the world

I thought of this in 2013. It was the follow-up thought that made me much less clever or accomplished than I could have been: "maybe someday when we all have supercomputers." My computer at the time ran minecraft at 0-1 fps on "tiny" distance, and I still enjoyed the game, and learned how to space out multiple inputs per frame so that they would all be accepted and affect the right blocks. Instead of having a rate, the frames had a rhythm, and so did my controls. I don't know about 1.17, but a sound can only start at the same time as a frame in 1.3, so a choir of sheep herd goes completely silent while waiting for the next frame if your hardware is weak enough... almost forgot that fact. I play at 90 fps now, a fact that would have exploded my juvenile self's head, killing him instantly. And we do all own supercomputers in 2021. Like we did in 2011, and in 2001. We just have short memories and an insatiable appetite for improvement. So at the time, the only mod idea I was seriously interested in trying to create was a text-mode minecraft mod, where nearby blocks and their positions would be printed out by name and you would type commands to control the player, one action at a time. Same game, different interface. Wonder where that idea came from. My point being, the limitations of your medium do make you more creative, but creativity is not productivity. We now have the power to be much more productive, but to be creative still requires pushing against our boundaries. Sand physics is up next or something. Or mob AI that learns.

This mod actually has a few extra blocks which would work for this purpose. There’s the pipe block, the pump block and the floodgate block. There’s also the pipeline pump, although I’m not sure how it works. Just put pumps into the body of water the waterfall will be flowing down into, and connect them via pipes to floodgates that will let water out into the body of water the waterfall will be coming out of.

Another thing id like to see that might be pushing it a bit far is a "spring" block that produces water or pushes water upwards, maybe from below it. Rain slowly causes puddles. Ok I need a breakdown of how that works. I can understand it working for a small puddle but for huge bodies of water like the ocean? How many updates and calculations does this need to do? How is it not turning your PC to a nuclear fusion source?
@Folkem
@Folkem 2 жыл бұрын
I guess not that much. Don't know the availabilities of Minecraft code, but I guess each "block" of water might hold an NBT parameter for filling percent, and if some block updates (like near it appears an air block, where the water might come too), then it divides it's NBT filling percent value so that both blocks have nearly equal filling. For huge bodies such as oceans it will probably take from a few seconds to a few minutes, because the math actually isn't that hard. Hard is including all connected blocks, I guess. Also this mod doesn't equalizes the "filling percent" (don't know it's exact terminology, so naming it like this), as was seen in when the small puddle got connected to an ocean it didn't fill up to nearly maximum (because the ocean is so big, that filling that small puddle shouldn't take more than 1% of the height of the top layer of the ocean, I reckon), so we might assume that it has kinda more complex logic. I think, that it won't overheat your PC in any way, because Minecraft already does a ton of calculations and updates without any mods, whereas this one, I guess, would add only a tiny bit of more calculations, which are gonna be done only by the block updates such as BLOCK BREAKED or BLOCK PLACED events. Edit: wow, that's a huge reply I wrote.

I added this mod to my old world. I love it despite it ruining some of my constructions. For example - I had an water slide ending in a river and a farm connected to the latter one.Of course when I updated a single block touching water the slide quickly went dry, level in river increased and my farm was destroyed. Sometimes I experienced slowdowns riding a minecart across large bodies of water, when the mod realized that there is a cave connected to it. Some lakes even went dry. One base that contained an underground waterfall is now a diving base. But on the other hand the auto-levelling feature is great. Handling the original MC water was pain in the butt. I only miss the waterfalls, but maybe will create some pumping systems for some of them.
