Discover how I obtained EU citizenship, all thanks to my great-great-grandfather and a teeny-tiny European country, and how you might be able to do the same! Luxembourg's unique citizenship laws, where descent restrictions don't apply, allow generations of descendants to reclaim their citizenship. With a bit of research and some paperwork, my family and I successfully reclaimed our Luxembourgish citizenship, opening up a world of opportunities within the European Union. From free education and healthcare to job market access, the benefits are immense. But I also acknowledge the privilege inherent in this process, recognizing that not everyone has such opportunities due to historical injustices. While there are third-party agencies that will guide you through the process (for a hefty fee), if you have a simple case (i.e. all-male lineage through at least 1969), you can absolutely DIY the process. If you have a more complicated lineage (e.g. some maternal ancestry), it may be worth consulting with one of these agencies to understand if you still have a pathway to citizenship.

I have a German ancestor somewhere down the line. Afaik Germany only gives you a residence permit and after living in Germany for five years you can claim German citizenship. As a wild guess, probably about half the white people in the US (and probably a significant portion of non-whites) have some German ancestry as it is the largest migrant group in the US (even more than the UK).

I think Italy have special laws about relatives in other country's too..u can get a dual citizenship check it out if ur grandpa or grandma was italian ..

My luxembourgish g g grandparents did pass on their language to me: French. They spoke French.

Luxembourg case is interesting but in say Germany, they now require a knowledge of German. I can prove my ancestors were from South-Western Germany but my German sucks, I would have to take courses to get a passport.

you should check again…luxembourg used to be no english 5 yrs ago….they changed the rules.

As a UK citizen who has lived in the EU all my life (UK from birth to age 28, other EU country from 28 to present), I was effectively stripped of my EU citizenship when my home country left the Union. If I want to regain it, I have to change my nationality, giving up my UK citizenship. This is not personal against you, but feels like a bit of a kick in the teeth the way Luxembourg hands out citizenship so easily, meaning some people with no real connection to the continent are able to get citizenship through the back door while others who have lived here all our lives, own property here, speak multiple European languages and, in many cases, whose children were born here, have a much harder time acquiring citizenship.

It's not necessarily true that you'd have to renounce your British citizenship in order to acquire citizenship of an EU country - it depends upon the rules of the particular country in question. The UK allows dual nationality, as do some EU countries.

Nope! I’m 100% British as far back as I can see and sadly not getting an EU passport anytime soon. Just gotta suck it up. C’est la vie.

True, although you don't need to be American to qualify for this, so long as your home country supports dual-citizenship!

I think if you speak english half as good as you need or even good enough to understand this video you can easily obtain an EU citizenship as well. And getting a visa is actually really easy as well, no clue what you are on about lol. I have many friends from very different places, many from south american countries like columbia, bolivia,.. who are working here and live like every other person lol.

Doesn't seem white privilege. The difference is that African countries are not really developed and for sure were not as educated in the 1800s in order to keep records of births (which would make your comment about being abducted into slavery irrelevant since the birth would have already been registered). You guys (americans) have pushed this white guilt to an extreme and absurd point. I am curious on what others things we can claim to be white privileges.

That's fantastic, congrats! I know both Italy and Ireland have similar rules with maybe a few more restrictions than Luxembourg.

Indeed, as far as i know, Poland is quite same and Lithuania, but the restriction on the transmission of citizenship through the paternal line is almost a constant in every country. An issue that began to change from the 1950s to the 1980s around the world, although it is an absolute shame that they have not made it retroactive to the past so that anyone descended from a woman can obtain citizenship. In my case, I could be Polish because of my maternal great-grandmother, but since she got married before 1951, I lost my citizenship, what a fucking shame. @@AlexRaePersonalFinance

@@AlexRaePersonalFinance Ireland grants citizenship by default to anyone with an Irish parent or grandparent born in the country, albeit with a few restrictions.

@@AlexRaePersonalFinance did you have your criminal check papers and long form birth certificate (new within 3 months of issue) with you when you went to luxembourg for passport or start that process by mail prior to leaving the states?
