I came up with a new and improved version of my sheepshead float rig to try out on a particularly windy day and this bobber rig was like a cheat code! It took almost all of the guess work out of sheepshead fishing and made a fish that's usually difficult to catch easy. I hope you all enjoyed the video and please let me know if you want to see more of the slip float rig in the future. I mean who doesn't love watching a bobber go under?

First off, that is brilliant. Second. it amazes me that sometimes, even with a bobber, you can't tell the fish is on. And lastly, I love watching that bobber!

I used slip floats for carp with great success. They present some of the same problems as sheepshead. A really light bite and quick to spit the hook. One of the things I have done in the past is to use a pencil bobber with just enough line between the bobber and the bottom to keep the bobber on its side. That way when a fish messes with the bait they make the bobber stand up. I'll try this next winter when sheepshead are back on the menu. Thanks for a great video.

Sometimes Sheepshead will just take the bait, crab, shrimp etc into their mouth and crush them and eat the soft parts and spit out the shells. Hence the bobber not being dragged under sometimes. Hard watching you throw them back. Love the method. Will try it. Great Video.

When there is wind with bobbers it actually helps me whenever I’m fishing for crappie because the wind creates waves that move the bobber up and down giving the jigs some slight action enticing those slower fish, I don’t know how it is for sheepshead using bait but I could bet it helps a little
@MakeTimeForFishing
@MakeTimeForFishing 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point! I think it helped because If the bobber didn't move like it was supposed to I know the sheepshead is sitting there munching on my bait.

Slip foat rig is money for shore fishermen. Even when I'm in the kayak, if current and/or wind won't cooperate with bottom sweepers, the slip float rig is a go to. If the bottom is especially nasty, the slip float is first string.

Chris, I have been using a float rig similar to yours since Moby Dick was a minnow and I can tell you sheephead almost never pull the cork down- most of the time they move it sideways and a lot of times they move it Up, because that's the way they feed, up.

I've actually used cylinder floats (like you use for bream or crappie) ... same concept, when they hit those (a lot like crappie do) it will usually just lay the float down on it's side as they feed up.

@@MakeTimeForFishing Your area looks almost identical to mine. It looks like you have a great fisher down there! I have had my yak since right after they came out. I immediately took apart the upper and lower drives and packed them with Marine grease... making sure that all metal surfaces were at least coated in grease. She has seen nothing but salt her whole life. Rammed into many sand/oyster bars, logs, and even a submerged concrete piling once at full speed. Barely even any scratches. Just dont ever pedal backwards even in soft mud. That will cause the thin side of the blades to dig in and it will get nicked. I just took my gearboxes apart again a month ago for the first time since I packed the grease in there. Still looks like new! Not bad. I thought it was going to be bad in there since she has been getting harder to pedal lately. However, it turns out that the pedals themselves had some grim built up on them... and that they were over-tightened. Cleaned up the grime and loosened the hardware a little... and now it is 2x easier to pedal. lol Will only make a difference on those long days of slow cruising though, I think. Most importantly though, it will feel better to me. Oh, and when going over a sand bar really quick you do not have to fully tuck the drive up into the hull most times. Just pull the pin, use your foot to push the drive forward and hold it up (but not into the hull), then paddle over the bar. Saves a lot of time and turns the task into something easy peasy.
@MakeTimeForFishing
@MakeTimeForFishing 2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate all the tips! I did pack it full of marine grease when I got mine but I do need to do some tightening on the prop I think, has a little back and forth wiggle but I love the drive.

So are you there at dead low tide? This past Sunday with the wind and king tide, it was all I could do to keep my bay boat still enough to fish. Looks like you have not current movement. That looks like the same creek I was fishing. It was right by the Wappoo Boat landing.

Probably there are two little problema to solve: the size of bobber do not help sensitivity and second one you need two stopper knot, to feel the bite of fish , one before and one after if you want. Maybe use and english bobber used with windy day and good sensitivity to feel fishes
@MakeTimeForFishing
@MakeTimeForFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I probably could have used a smaller bobber and/or a larger weight to decrease the overall buoyancy. I do actually have some of those "English bobbers" laying around, maybe I'll try those next time. Thanks for the ideas!

Have caught snook, reds, jacks and trout so far in my short career (third trip upcoming). This video has me stoked to catch my first 🐑. Appreciate the info and the style with which you deliver it. One question if I may....Are fiddlers the best/only way to go and are they sold at bait shops?
@MakeTimeForFishing
@MakeTimeForFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! Glad you like my videos! Sounds like you've been getting on the fish quickly! Fiddlers and other live crabs are excellent bait for sheeps but you can also use oysters and mussels just a more fragile bait to work with. It depends on how cold it's been and the bait shop but many carry fiddlers. Goodluck!

Nice action. Thanks for sharing the video. Question, everytime fish bite you slowly lift the fishing rod and fish is hooked. Why is that? I used to fish for sheepshead when I lived down in TX. Those critters have hard mouth and if I don't set the hook hard, they usually spit the hook. However, yours looked effortless. What's the trick?
@MakeTimeForFishing
@MakeTimeForFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Yes, what I'm doing is lifting up to confirm I feel a fish there then I set the hook with the line already tight. I use a very small size 1 owner mosquito hook and it's crazy sharp so even a small hookset usually gets them well hooked. Thanks for watching!

@@ej1547 Sharp hooks is one of the keys to getting the sheepshead hook set. Their mouths are so hard that it is very easy to get your hook point bent just a small amount. I keep a hook sharpener with me all the time and a regular check on my hook point.
