I’ve played golf for decades and always suffered from early extension, flipping ,chunky and thin shots . I’ve always started the downswing with the trail knee caving in towards the right knee . That’s the way I was taught . After practicing dropping the training ball from just above the knees and then doing the squat with real shots I was amazed at the difference this simple move made . Much crisper contact, improvement in direction and power . The fat shot almost disappeared. I think this one adjustment to my swing has made the greatest impact on consistency. I wish I had used this tip decades ago . Thanks again for your advice , it really has helped me.

Thanks Jonathan. Still learning the game and didn't realise I was doing this in an effort to stop hanging on my back foot, causing me to early extend. This move has made a big difference already to both my contact and clubhead speed 👍

Very cool of you to give a shout out to GG, a lot of instructors wouldn’t have. I’m an old dude and have been working on switching my swing to this rotational method for about 9 months. This method is not as simple as GG makes it sound on his videos and I will seriously look into your rotational series because based on the videos you put out, you will make it much more easy to understand and implement than other Gucci teachers out there :)

Great video - I had a lesson recently and the pro identified this problem with me. I'm now doing your drill to try and correct it, but I have a question. How does this issue affect driver swings compared to iron swings, particularly as the driver should have a trail side tilt to encourage an upward strike...?

It is about sequence. The knees are touching at the finish of the swing and I agree you should not fire the knee or lateral side bend too early in the downswing. But once pressure is shifted to the lead foot the entire right fires, right shoulder, right hip, right knee. You can focus on what works for you. Keeping in mind what Pete Cowen says, “No matter what you do in the downswing, do it sooner.”

This seems like a tricky one! In your good swing, the right knee DOES move towards the left knee ... just a fraction of a second later than in the bad swing. It's a very small difference. The bigger difference seems to be in you trail foot. On the bad swing, it's 100% ROLL off the trail foot, with the heel part still touching the ground. On the good swing, it's both ROLL and HEEL LIFT.

The right knee moving in late is fine (through impact) it’s a problem area in my swing also, as it won’t be perfect on the “good swings”. The trail foot isn’t the cause of the problem, it’s the effect. Far more goes into trail foot movement than just the trail knee but it does have a big effect on it.

I am guilty of this move. I had to video my swing to see it. Its a hard habit to break as you mentioned. Thanks for the drill to correct it.

How do you explain the greatest ball striker ever? Ben Hogan tried to run his right knee at the ball, it’s obvious when you watch his swing. He also had great rotation.

His left knee is externally rotating. Moves his left hip behind him and keeps the rotation from stalling

With the squat incorporated at the beginning of the downswing when does the weight transfer to the lead foot begin ? Straight after the squat or at the same time ?

Hey Johnathon, I actually have the exact opposite problem with my R knee: it stays pretty much static never moving in toward the L knee for its “kiss” . The R foot 🦶 stays plastered to the ground until way after impact. Rotation to clear the hips is just stymied because of this! Can you do a video for someone with the opposite problem of a stagnant R knee and foot in the downswing, please? What drills can I do to help this?? 🙏

it really depends if you move your upper body the way you show it then definitely it’ll be harder to swing better, but if you slide your right knee first and maintain the height of your body then rotation will be better..

Tom Watson- " I feel as if I'm driving my right knee and keeping it behind my left as long as possible." I am sorry but the dropping the ball drill is not exactly the best drill, you just end up slacking out loaded spiral lines and FEELING like you are moving your right knee behind your left keeps your trail hip back and its a great feel for people who early extend.

As a person who has a bad right knee this might just fix the problem. As many players have commented they were taught to fire that right side from the ankles up ala Jack Nicholas (Golf My Way). I can't fire that right knee and this might just make a big difference.

JChownGolf is the best golf Instructor on KZfaq watch him and listen to what he say's and do the drill you be a better golfer in no time from 9 handicap to 4 in seven month thats not bad practice more is the key.

I feel like I am jumping off my right side, which seems similar, and I try to keep the right hip level or at the same height.

I watched this video a couple of times and studied swings of several pros over this weekend, including Seniors, LPGA, and PGA tournaments. I haven’t seen one player do this “squat and push out” on the downswing. Not sure who GG is, but this idea sure isn’t popular today. Maybe I just don’t get this concept.

What you show as bad example is reverse pivot. Of course bad. So, i'm not sure about this lesson. But i keep on watching your content because overall it's great and i will overthink this one because of that.

All good golfers have right knee reach ball before hands. Just watched a video that said complete opposite, man this games full of contradictions!

From shaft parallel into impact the knee will fire inwards slightly, but it certainly won’t beat the hands to the ball. That will result in a tilt back of the upper body, stall in rotation and flip

You are so wrong. Some need a lateral movement. Every golfswing is different. Physical capabilities are not universal. Own your swing, moving right knee to target to start downswing could be beneficial to some!

Lateral movement is absolutely necessary but via a weight shift/pressure shift. Moving the trail knee inwards to do this is extremely damaging to the swing and body. It will take less athleticism to do what I’m saying to do in this video

After moving in the right knee, the left side firms up and rotation happens automatically. Side bend is not always the resulting kinetics
