"One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact." Neil wrote this song to express his discomfort with life in the public eye, as an introvert who needed time alone to recharge his mental energy, as one who valued his privacy, and as one who was struggling with anxiety issues stemming from a traumatic childhood incident. As he recalled in his book Travelling Music, he was 10 years old, swimming in Lake Ontario, when an encounter with a group of bullies led to him almost drowning until he was saved at the last minute by two classmates, from which he developed a strong distrust of strangers; several years later, while he was touring with Rush, he became caught in a crush of fans, triggering a traumatic flashback to that day, from which he developed a phobia of being "trapped," and a persistent, overwhelming urge to escape. Behind the barriers he'd put up to keep himself intact, he was an incredibly gifted musician and lyricist, and in addition to the above suggestions, I'd like to suggest La Villa Strangiato and 2112 as two more examples of that. Neil Peart R.I.P 🥁 🥁 🔥 🔥

I had the Hemispheres album with the naked guy. My dad jumped to dumb conclusions about my interest in Rush. Later they released "Power Windows" with a shirtless teenaged boy and again I had to put up with stupidity..

I love the reaction and I guess I was one of the lucky ones. 40 years of Rush and I am still thrilled to see other peoples reaction, it's really an affirmation to me when I see it, I felt the same and still do. They have such a catalog of music now that diving down the rabbit hole is daunting but worth it.

The studio where they did this pretty much does look like a house from the outside. Le Studio was a recording studio located in the Laurentian Mountains in a resort town north of Montreal. A number of different artists and groups recorded there over the years, including Cat Stevens, Bryan Adams, Chicago, Nazareth, Corey Hart, and The Police, to name a few. Unfortunately the studio is no more, as it has since been demolished.

THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!! PERFECT reaction! Wow! Was that really your first time hearing any Rush? That was so cool. You guys -- you let the song play without any breaks -- and you were vibing so hard!! Super cool. You should listen to their song "Tom Sawyer", "Spirit of Radio", YYZ (live from Rio) and "Closer to the Heart"!!

Listen to YYZ and Red Barchetta. 3 man band from Toronto Canada. I've been listening to Rush for 40 years and seen them in concert in Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1994. Fantastic live.Lead singer,Bass player and keyboards Geddy Lee,drummer Neil Peart who just past away recently RIP 🙏 and Alex Liefson lead guitarist. I'm 59 so I grew up on Rush. They played 26 times in the 1970's,1980's and 1990's.

Loved your 1st time exposed reaction! :) I am a 48 YEAR RUSH fan. Yes I picked up their self-titled debut album immediately upon US release in June 1974. They became my favorite band the instant the needle touched vinyl. I was 13. I'm now 61.My girlfriend turned me on to them. Sharp gal huh? I still have every vinyl original album. Saw them twice; in 1977 & 1980. The '77 show I was front row center arms on stage. No fan barriers in the 70's. Every arena show was general admission. You arrive early & run for your life. You could reach out and touch them you were that close. It was like they were playing solely for me. Welcome to the Cult. You have no idea what you are in for. The GREATEST virtuosos in one band in the history of rock. All three members are musical genuises. For the cherry on top...THE LYRICS ARE EVEN BETTER THAN THE MUSIC! You'll see. And oh btw...the DRUMMER is also the sole lyricist. He also is widely considered the greatest drummer in the history of music. Buckle up...

Your first RUSH? Like many others with reaction channels, RUSH never ceases to impress. They are one of THE BANDS. They are top tier Rock n Roll with millions of fans around the globe and did it for decades. RUSH is very Special. Intelligent lyrics and unparalleled musicianship with some off the charts creativity. 3 silly men from Canada. They are legendary in the Rock world. You will see. Most people on KZfaq become fans from the first time hearing them. It will be no different for you. This is one of the best, all time, rabbit holes you will find in modern music. I could go on and on, like most of us hardcore, lifelong fans can do. These guys are worth it. Enjoy the ride! I will go ahead and suggest a song called The Analog Kid. You don’t need to gauge my opinion by checking views and likes because most of the people that’s based on have no clue about some of this music us Old School were with from the time it started. I don’t recommend weak music ever. I was THERE! Saw RUSH 18 times on 17 tours over the decades. I know this stuff. All of this Rock, I saw live when it came out originally. Sooo many concerts. Anyway, my opinion is very valid, that’s why I mentioned my experience. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. My concert list is stupid ridiculous. RUSH is really one of the best bands you will hear. They lasted for decades so that’s a LOT of high quality music. 😁👍

🤣😂 Amazing you guys reacted like that to one of the MOST spectacular songs ever made! When I first listen to this song (back when it came out in '81) I was 15 years old and Disco was still going around, and I was in my dad's car parked in the driveway which had a "state of the art" audio system for that era ( I spent a LOT of time inside of it) and this song came up in the radio station.... I was... WTF!!!!!!!!! I rushed (no pun intended) to call the radio station to ask for the name of that song and the band's name.. lo and behold.. the next day it was the FIRST vinyl I've ever bought!!! Neil was a drum's GOD, Alex is one of the best rock guitarists ever, and Geddy, he's a bass' charmer! But one other thing I love the most of this trio, it's their sense of humor.

Rush are Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards Alex Lifeson guitars+ Neil Peart drums, percussion and main lyrist This song was written by Neil Peart who was a very shy and private person who felt awkward about being famous. He is considered one if not the best drummers in rock. Unfortunately he passed from brain cancer in January of 2020. This video was shot at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec Other Canadian bands besides Rush recorded there as well. Others suggestions YYZ live in Rio Working man live in Cleveland Xanadu from Exit Stage Left Cheers

I love the way Neil Peart the drummer wrote the songs. He made them so cool. The Limelight. I could imagine it would feel the way the song was written. Being in a fisheye lense camera on you if your famous. It’s sounds exciting but it would get old after some time I would think.

In 1981, I was jamming alone in the living room of a shared house owned by my ex-drummer, whose refusal to re-record a mistake in his own basement 8-trk. studio, a sloppy fill he'd played on a song to be submitted for a radio competition led me to quit my own band. A housemate came in with Rush's new record, this one, 'Moving pictures', and I began playing along with it as best I could, which was not too bad at all. He was impressed anyway, and i was pleased with my performance, ear and agility. This was my favourite, and I played it with a band in the mid-00s. Rest In Peace, drummer/lyricist Neil Peart(rhymes with 'feared'). What a masterpiece from these three. Next, Maybe 'The Spirit of Radio', 'Tom Sawyer', 'Red Barchetta', and 'Xanadu'.

Nothing like the rush from listening to your first Rush song . Great reaction .Rush is Canada's #1 export . Three of the best musicians putting out great music for over 40 years . Rush are masters of their instruments , and of Progressive Rock , nobody dose it better , and its only three guys putting out all that music . The rabbit hole is deep with Rush but well worth the trip , often imitated but never duplicated . Try Tom Sawyer , or Spirit of Radio next . Keep on reacting and the Rush army will keep watching

Keep searching thru the 70s and early 80s. Though you are now spoiled with Rush, there are many other bands during that era that were flat out amazing. Unlike today's cookie cutter recipe for every band/singer. Back then, many bands had their own identity, sound, groove and message. It was nothing like todays music. There will never be an era like that ever again.
