A town in Cornwall has permanently banished camper vans and motor homes from parking over night on the seafront and other beauty spots. But have these restrictions just moved the van life community to the streets outside the million pound houses?

I’m a Falmouth uni student who was born in Cornwall and living in a van now full time because student accommodation is 12 grand a year. It’s great when even the uni car park won’t let you park overnight in the Penryn car park which is open 5pm-9am for free anyway 🤦‍♀️

We're campervanners and live near Falmouth. Another friend with a van actually saw someone emtying the toilet cassette from their van on the verge at Maenporth Beach one evening last winter when they thought no-one else was watching. These are the people who give the rest of us a really bad name and are making wild camping very difficult in many places.

Its an issue van lifers/ free campers face, i have seen a toilet emptied into a bin bag and put in a public bin, Too many of us are not being responsible , and here we are with the backlash and restrictions, There are no excuses for some of the entitled behaviour, I hope it settles down,

Van lifers are governments worst nightmare, can’t control people who take their home with them. Unsurprising they’re going to make van life as difficult as possible now it’s gaining traction. Yes and to be fair this used to be a secretive and niche hobby to be a stealth camper as it were, however the internet and Covid played a large part in enticing people out in campers in their droves, people who may even watch videos like yours on KZfaq. so with more footfall in Cornwall you’re boosting the economy on one hand but sometimes attracting those unsavoury characters who weren’t brought up properly and leave their trace, too reflective of society in general sadly 🫤

@MyStonefish oh yes I know this too well being from Devon! The A30 out there is still busy as we speak 😯 I wanted to try a bit of stealth camping myself when I could afford a campervan, but sadly now I don’t think I’ll bother as it’s too much hassle, everyone just gets treated as nuisances now it’s been put on the radar.

The problem in the UK is a culture prblem compared to mainland Europe. We seem not to understand that parking and camping are very different things . The problem onthe whole is people parking up then getting chairs and tables etc outside that's camping not parking. This will need in more restrictions . Lao remember alot of these signs are not traffic roads accordance meaning they are worthless signs but it's scares off 90 percent of people . The last factor is people resentful that they own land and pay council tax etc then get the same view they have . It's all a culture issuie in UK with no solution

If you pay Road Tax you are entitled to park on any public road...period ! It's unlawful to restrict parking area's or make drivers pay. Anyone who disrespects by bad and dirty behaviour by leaving rubbish then that counts for penalties on their driving licences. Most people who have campervans, cars or vans who park up are very clean and respectful. So one shoe fits all remit by Councils are wrong and should be rectified.

Absolute rot! Who told you that? I write the following as a retired highway engineer of some forty years knowledge. The public highway exists to allow vehicles, animals and foot passengers to pass and repass - there is NO right to park. Indeed, if anything is placed on the public highway so as obstruct passing and repassing, it constitutes an obstruction and may be removed by the highway authority, regardless as to whether there are yellow lines, etc. or not.

I'm in Galloway and we are struggling with the amount of vans coming here. I agree that it's not the majority that misbehave but there are enough to make us not too keen on them for example filling up car parks on the coast for days and leaving a mess behind them.

It's the few vanners that spoil it for ever else by not following the correct procedure disposing of their toilets and rubbish. Depends what type of van it is also. If its an old hand painted Transit with rust and general grot you can understand it. Residents will fear new age travellers. However, if its a fairly new vehicle in good order they probably wouldn't care so much.

Love the videos as always! As someone local to Falmouth, there was some absolute sheds that used to park there and I wouldn't want that outside my home / business either. I love vans and vanlife, but some of them in Falmouth look like they shouldn't even be on the road. To be fair to the people that did used to stay there it was never dirty with litter or smelly with urine and if you passed late on a night it was always quiet. But if you paid good money to stay at that hotel or any of the apartments down there, and you got there to what looked like a scrap yard parked right in front you'd be a bit miffed. And before people have a go at me saying "well maybe it's all some people can afford" I TOTALLY get that! But a wash doesn't cost much, to clean the moss and green algae off the side of your van costs just a few pounds at the local fuel station or something like that. I always really liked Falmouth and we never got chance to stay there once our van was finished as this ban came into place. It is really sad how against campers the UK is compared to the rest of Europe and its sad this has been ruined by the minority for the majority.

The problem isn't van dwellers but those who holiday for free! We live in our van and we have witnessed first hand the people who are on holiday don't care because next they can go home. We now work on a camp site and these same people will sneak in here to empty rubbish, the loo and shower or whatever they need. These are the free loaders who need to stay at home or pay their way!

It is a matter of economics that is motivating the change in attitude. Frugal campervanners are gradually displacing casual tourism who plough decent money into the local economy. Campervanners are largely self sufficient; they aren’t buying overpriced rooms and lunches. The image and sanitation issue will be a supporting factor, but this is definitely motivated by economics - it always is.

Agreed about that chip shop. It was very mediocre when we went. The pub is good though. We sat outside there a couple of years ago. I think the problem with van parking is places like Bristol, where whole streets are full of people living in their vans. Other councils see that and worry they could go the same way.

Quite honestly, many of these “No overnight parking/camping/sleeping “ notices are to discourage the travelling community, who have been known to cause councils a lot of trouble. We have a motorhome, and these are our rules when “wild camping.” Don’t park outside someone’s house. Don’t join a large group of vans. 2 or 3 vans are good for security. Don’t stay more than 1 or 2 nights in any place. Have a spare toilet cassette, in case you can’t find a public toilet to empty your cassette. Don’t use chemicals in toilet cassette, so you can empty into any toilet without harm. Cesspits and septic tanks can be rendered non-operational by chemicals, there are “green” alternatives, or just use some bio-detergent. Obviously, never leave rubbish. Don’t necessarily obey notices; you can always move on if asked to do so (we have never been asked to move in 10 years). Have secure locks on doors, and keep windows closed and blinds down after dark. If hot, open roof vents. HAPPY VANNING TO ALL.

Hi, this is not only a british issue but an european one in general as you might probably know. In december 23 we actually planed to travel to the UK this early summer but - sad to say - we decided not to. Here in Germany - which is for sure not the most attractive but nevertheless nor the most unattractive destination - you would make the same experiences depend on the region. And I must say that I do understand locals who are fed up with campers. There are so many of us who have obviously never seen a garbage bin (or whatever it's called in english), have no sense of how to behave and how to camp as restraining (again I do not know if that's the correct word). There are to many campers and not enough spots where we could stand free and legal as long as we don't want to use official campgrounds. We#ve had good experiences with the italien and german versions of "Britstop" but in deed that is not the same. I don't want to sound educative, but if we feel that we disturb locals we don't even stop. If there is a sign which says "no camping" I might find that sad or whatever - I'm not wnated there and if I would spend the night there, that just causes even more anti-camping mood. And that's bad for every camper. Yes, it's sad and (past in other words of anger) - but ignoring signs is not the solution. Not in the Uk nor anywhere else. Appart from that: if you finde the time visit Sweden. That's a complet different world for campers. cheers und schöne Grüße aus Deutschland

Hi Shaun x I practise trigger point therapy here in NZ x you may have tendonitis from all the manual work you have been doing - but also it may be Golfers Elbow. If it is - active trigger points in your triceps ( muscles in the back of the arm)may be the cause and it's an easy fix. Pain at the front of the elbow that you are describing is the classic symptom. Try putting your other hand(thumb) into the painful inner elbow and use your 2nd finger to explore and see if there is an area of tenderness x if you can find a tender spot try pressing on it (Ischaemic pressure) for 90 seconds at a 6/10 in pain and see if that brings relief x repeat 2-3 times a day. Also a soft ball on your kitchen bench top and massage the muscles in the back of the arm. Inner elbow can also be TP's in the chest muscles. Again a ball on the chest muscles and gently roll around using 2 hands and see if there are tender spots( trigger points) xxx hope its an easy fix - if its tendonitis you may need a cortisone injection.

I genuinely believe that talk of motor homers/van lifers emptying their waste is mostly propaganda. I am not saying that it hasn't happened, but I believe there is a resentment among certain people who have jumped on this narrative, to further fuel a contempt for alternative lifestyles. In my personal experience, most Motor homers/van lifers are good natured, respectful humans who love nature, and extremely respectful of other's surroundings; even, actually cleaning up litter, that locals have deliberately dis-guarded, including black plastic bags of dog poo!

We have lived in our moho for 3 years now and we have NEVER witnessed toilet emptying or such like. We have seen people setting up camp which is bad. The mess we have witnessed is people pulling up in cars. They are far messier and more noisy.

@jeff30795 8 ай бұрын
It's really quite discriminatory and I feel something of a 'false flag' to accuse Moho/van lifers with such claims. My daughter nearly, almost completely lost her sight when she was around 6 yrs old. It turned out to be Toxoplasmosis (via accidental ingestion of Dog or Cat faeces.) picked up whilst playing in a park. And yet, no matter where you go, dis-guarded black plastic bags of dog poo can be found, hanging up on a fence post, or up on a tree branch; and litter strewn about the place.. Part of the problem is that local councils will not take appropriate responsibility for the supply of waste bins, and therefore, deflect blame by pointing to our door!@@ArianneAvalon

Stop it. I haven't been home to Falmouth in over six years. Currently living in Australia and loving life. But videos of my old home is making me homesick. Flushing or Mylor is a good spot to park up. Even the carpark between St Gluvias Church and Travis Perkins is ok at a push.

Maybe we need people removing the no overnight parking signs 😂to be honest from midnight until 6am isn’t really bothering people! But loud disrespectful van lifers playing loud music and leaving rubbish is almost certainly the reason 🤷🏻‍♂️people have even been seen emptying toilets on the street too 🤔shame how it can reck it for the good ones

The video ( at both ends ) highlights the issues There’s been a persistent problem on the seafront of a lot of vans parked there for days sometimes it’s 20 plus , and then you’ve got the group overlooking the docks that have been there all summer and then you’ve got people that just flout the rules I love my van but I really think we need to be more careful and subtle in our behaviour Falmouth is a beautiful place , I’ve grown up here and there are lots of campsites available nearby and quieter locations

France is a republic and camping car aires (short stay overnight parking, not camping)is part of their constitution, to promote visitor trade in the local area, Fresh water and waste/ toilet disposal is often at a cost, In contrast portugal have made free camping illegal due to the issues we have been talking about, We need free camping to stay in the uk, that will be dependant on the less responsible /freeloaders, Living or holidaying in a van or motorhome is not free, using public toilets after a casette has splashed everywhere with nothing to clean up with is misuse and unhygienic,
@G-ra-ha-m

@@charlesdeakins2546 Look at the local costs for a council to implement a 20mph scheme. It's hundreds of thousands. All motorhomes need is a place to park, a waste pipe, a tap, and a dustbin. The Local Government Act 1888 Section 79(2) allows them to spend the money to do this: councils are supposed to be our servants, not rulers.

Morning shaun ITS the Scratched record here 🤣 great video on van life at the coast and towns not wanting us. I feel the best way to show them just how much of a difference we make in the towns. Is black list them don't go the shop owners will then kick of to the council when profits are down. We always do the same park in land then go back to the coast in the morning. Hope you get the new van back on the road soon, safe travels. 🫶👍

Wait till dozens of camper vans come and rock up outside your house. Guarantee you won’t feel the same. I’m in north devon and am sick of huge vans parking in stupid places and driving down tiny lanes and making people reverse because they can’t but they are “loving their van life”. You lot putting videos out encourages them and is your own downfall. If you find a good thing, keep it quiet but don’t promote it, then when loads of others do it get vexed because people moan about having to live next to your “van life”.
