The battle against climate change is creating all-new economies and truly unique innovations. We went to a lab in Hawaii and a farm in New York to see how an unlikely pair are teaming up to fight one of agriculture's most potent problems: methane gas.

I agree that these terms can be very confusing, seaweed is in fact a type of algae! Many of the algae that we think of normally are single-celled microalgae, but there are many algae that are multicellular with differentiate tissues, scientist call these "macroalgae" but most people just call them "seaweed." There are also a few organisms that are commonly called seaweed but are not algae and are actually vascular plants, mostly sea grasses. So they're definitely not perfect synonyms, but there is a lot of overlap A. taxiformis happens to be an organism that could be correctly identified as algae and seaweed. Hope this helps! :)

I wonder if they could find the specific chemicals in the seaweed (if there are specific ones/one and not too many) that contribute to this effect of reducing methane and genetically engineer bacteria or yeast to mass produce it. Might be a more efficient/economically viable way to produce it, idk, just a thought. Anyway this is really promising for helping reduce effects of climate change if they can manage to get it used wide-scale.

The methane is produced by symbiotic bacteria that live in the Rumen stomach chamber when they break down cellulose. Cows themselves cant really break down cellulose very efficiently so the bacteria convert it into starches and other carbohydrates that the cow can digest. By feeding seaweed it changes the makeup of the symbiotic bacteria and some of these new bacteria species can break down cellulose with a lower production of methane. (As far as I know anyways, I'm a farmer studying this in university but the bacteriology section is slightly out of my feild)
@acctsys
@acctsys 3 жыл бұрын
@@edcasey3850 Thanks! It seems to me, that it's the microbes in the seaweed that allows this change. It may be kind of similar to LAB being fed to chickens which allow chickens to digest feeds better. Or maybe the seaweed itself acts a bit like probiotics. If the N in methane becomes absorbable protein, that sounds great.
