Something they don't explicitly state, but imply several times throughout this series, is that the water in Zaun is extremely toxic. They might could swim down and get the stuff from the canal, but whoever did so would come back up with like 7 different kinds of cancer and 15 parasitic infections. Once the bag is dropped, it's over.

The geometry of the city is not explained the show, and it causes a lot of confusion. There's a canal going through the city, east to west. The rich side, Piltover, is the on the north side of the river/canal, while the south side is the poor side. When the canal was built an accident created a big ravine. This ravine is on the south side of the canal and is where the Undercity is located. I hope they give good bird's eye of the layout in S2. I was also confused when I first watched.

Welcome to the ride that is Arcane. You're going to love it. One of the things that always gets me is that people think of Powder as being an innocent kid... but... here in episode 1, she is 100% ready to nail-bomb a kid in the face. It's the environment that they're in that has fostered that... but STILL. Also, it is a 3D show, yes, but all of the textures on the models are hand-painted, and the effects like flashes or smoke are all 2D drawn in over the 3D footage. It's pretty amazing how they did all of this.

A couple of suggestions to help your Arcane experience. 1) Before watching episode 7 watch the Imagine Dragons "Enemy" video (it will add context and make the episode hit that much harder. 2) after finishing the season, watch the "Worlds 2023 show open". Consider it a live action version of Arcane.

loving the extended review. So many react channels just have a couple minutes of conclusion... you both really get into it, the themes, the architecture, the symbolism, the characters, the music... From my understanding, the literal underground is from a ravine where there was mining. The "undercity" is the south part of the city, south of the brige/river, which also has the underground as a part of the undercity. Topside = rich Undercity = poor Underground = terrible, polluted air in a ravine. Enforcers wore masks while outdoors. Organized Crime region.

Also, in The Game Piltover was built directly above Zaun(Named for its two founding tribes, Oshra`Va Zaun(Southern Zaun) and Kha`zhun(Northeastern Zaun)who worshipped the wind spirit Janna and their mages were so feared by Piltover and Demacia they banned magic to keep the Zaunites down which led to a lot of poverty, pollution and crime in Zaun, particularly when Pilties sent their undesirables down there, mad scientists, gangsters and corrupt pharmacists etc. who became the first Chem-Barons, the Chem--Barons are generally liked by average Zaunites about as much as Topsiders and Yordles which is to say not much at all.)

You’re recognizing VI’s actress Hailee Steinfeld because she played Hawkeye’s daughter in the MCU…and also plays Gwen Stacy in the Spiderverse movies. It says a lot she got the/a lead role in one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and one of the greatest animated films of all time. Either way…Arcane is a lot. It’s a beast of a show and looking forward to your thoughts

Oh my god on this day I just realized : Boldcast had never watched Arcane !!!?!! I'm very glad to have discovered that issue with my life the very day it gets solved. You're going to adore this show I already know it. The first episode is probably the "worst", in the sense that it's the least good and it has the least plot, but it's aaaaall up from there. Funnily enough, both Mia`s first and second voice roles were in French/American animated series.Incidentally, I`m also Basque, Ashkenazi, Yemenite, Mizrahi and Sephardic Jewish, Romani and Alsatian so I`m both French and American as well.

The geography isn't super obvious from the show, so a brief summary: the upper class area is called Piltover, it's entirely above ground. Across the river, the slums and undercity are called Zaun. Most of Zaun is underground, but there's a small section at the surface, where Vi and Powder are chatting at the end of the episode. As for how the rich profit off of the underground, Zaun has a lot of mining operations.

Just stumbled across this reaction, seen multiple people react to Arcane. Interesting listening to their theory where they predict Jinx would join Piltover and Vi would join Silco, which is the opposite of what actually happens.

So it's not super clear from this first episode, but the poor side of the city extends all the way from the surface to deep underground. At the end, Powder and Vi are on the roofs of the uppermost level of the poor side.

I didn't know much about League of Legends when I started watching this. I had played the games years ago but ran into an issue and couldn't get it to load. I hadn't been playing very long so I just gave up. I had a vague understanding of who some of the champions where, not all of whom are in this. I was still able to enjoy the series with little knowledge of the source material.

How I look at this show is it's split up into 3 acts. Act 1 is 1-3, Act 2 is 4-6, and Act 3 is 7-9.

Piltover(upside) and Zaun(downside) used to be a whole city above ground. It was a strait city. Later, the administrators who wanted to turn this city into a trade center wanted to turn this strait into a canal. However, during this process, things did not go as planned and the south side of the city collapsed underground as a result of an explosion. The collapsed part was called Zaun, and became the home of those who wanted to do business without the laws of the upside (Piltover).
