This SIMPLE EXERCISE Will Change the Way you PAINT - Values and Blending Tutorial

Values are essential to create realistic paintings because they reveal the presence of light. It is through values that light can be represented on the surface of the object, giving it the illusion of form and volume. Light and shadows are omnipresent and if we are used, from childhood, to represent things with symbols, with abstract lines, the actual, visual reality is that our eyes only perceives masses of value. There are no lines in nature, only patterns of light and dark shapes next to each other.
Today, we are going to talk about an Atelier inspired exercise that will help us explore values in a simplified way to better visualize the large areas of shadows, midtones and highlights. This exercise consists of making a still life with only three values and not blending from one area to another, which means that all the value areas will have hard edges, as if they had been cut out of paper.

I am an artist living and working in France. this exercise is actually one of the few exercises that really transitioned me to painting,, in fact whenever i feel burn out or the dreaded art block, i usually resort to this exercise along with negative space exercise and blind drawing to get my momentum back. these exercises REALLY trains your eyes to /see/ 😅 (AND you can even do them as quick as 5 minutes!)

What an excellent video!! I have understood the concept intellectually (shapes of light and dark creating form) and tried to apply it in my painting, but I've never taken this approach. I actually use the posterize filter on photoshop as an aid to see the shapes, but I've never done an exercise applying paint that way. Definitely going to do this!! Makes so much sense!! I'm struggling with an oil portrait now (definitely value soup). I'm going to try this exercise with it. Thank you again for the 'ah-ha' moment!!

Interesting tips I usually draw with a basic push pencil 0.7mm So I guess you can use like no hatching, some hatching and like full black trying that on pencil? Still it interesting since for the most parth the noob will want to do the multiple values really quickly I know I do that alot trying t push a tone of value too quickly and I lose the key value and some area are like less dark than an other when it should be darker it end up looking weird. Any way I might try it out sometime.

- Interesting! ‘Blending happens when the structure of the value masses are established.’ Reminds me of my old vocal coach/singing teacher. - She gave me similar advice when I started working with her. She said: ‘When you master the basics of singing, the structure, you’re free to play around with different techniques, and also you’ll be a more confident singer once you master the fundamentals of singing. - Only then could I blend different sounds, using my singing voice in a more personal way. You’ll have a solid fundament to stand on. 😊

I learned about values when I took a class in black and white photography back in the 70's. Excellent theory class. Looked at a lot of back and white photographers. You really appreciated how Ansel Adams perfected his craft. The richness of his photographs was amazing. A friend of mine bought 5 of his prints. We would sit in his living room and just stare at those prints. Beautiful.

Hello Florence. How are you doing? I loved your intro. If only we can see the people in our lives in nuances.... More highlights, low lights and shadows, less of.... "this is the symbol or image of a perfect person/life". How much happier would we be if our expectations amd views of this life experience, weren't so "cut-out". Or rather, cut throat learned behavior. We'll see the beauty in what others call 'imperfect or flawed'. Was it Marilyn Monroe who said, "perfect is boring"? Not sure now lol. And the blending part made me think about people who don't know boundaries. Especially unhealthy relationships, where you're so codependent that you almost completely lose your own identity ("shape"). I wish I could paint like that. I'm sure I can. Who knows... Maybe one day I can do the training. Take care. Thank you for always giving me food for thought AND teach me the skills I lack as an amateur artist.

Thank you for this great exercise, and perfect video ! I have a question: when you say blending comes after, to soften the hard edges, it only goes for the alla prima technique right? I personally paint with layers, and if I make the mistake of not blending while still wet (and I have to be fast coz using liquin), it’s quite hard to avoid the edges seing through on the next layer. It only cost another layer 😅 And we know that we can’t play with different mediums, such as starting with linseed/standoil then a top layer with liquin… What would you do?

I would suggest that you blend before it dries, alla prima or not. When I say in the end it just means when values are accurate. The order is more a hierarchy or priorities, with time and experience you do all at once. So blend before it dries whenever possible.

Stop telling people that doing art wrong and there’s only one way to and that is way. Art is self expression and as such there is “ wrong “ to do art. Don’t you ever get sick thinking you know everything? I know I do.
