1. Skip to 13:47 for how it works on guitar. You won't understand what's going on unless you watch how it works first though. 2. I didn't add fret numbers because this works for ALL position. I happen to play and demonstrate this example in A at the 5th fret. I don't want you to be stuck in one key/position. This works for all 12 positions. Print off the free PDF 12x and add position numbers to get a more solid understanding. 3. Learn your pentatonics and how the 3 and 2 group idea works first if this is too much for you. Here's the link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e86XgrR7s6q6fnU.html 4. Buy my book :) rickysguitar.com/store

Am I the only one who is struggling to follow as a result of the absence of fret numbering on the diagrams? I'm quite quite willing to accept that this is a superb lesson covering some fundamental theory, but without knowing where on the guitar necks these boxes are positioned I cannot follow the theory. Am I missing something? Guess I shall just have to watch it over and over until the penny drops 🙂

Finally! Someone who can explain all aspects (fretboard, tension, C&R, chord tone targeting and pentatonic anatomy) all in the same study! Thanks Ricky. I was so close doing this myself and you filled in the final missing piece - targeting the 3rd of the current chord of the moment. Now I can combine scale and chord tone soloing strategies into one beautiful mix.

Ive been playing a long time. I was naturally gravitating to this method. But it's the first i've seen in a video. And it's brilliant. It solves the problem of needing to memorize triads too. It's absolute simple genius. This is how one should learn the guitar. Showing basic locations of intervals in the right context can open major doors. This was a lesson I won't forget for many years, and will show many people. I tried this tonight with some backing tracks that were even in minor, and I got all my minor 7 triads all over as well, which I'd been struggling with. No more memorization for traids. Raise your glasses to Ricky. Thank you my man, top shelf.

Good to find someone teaching these sub-groupings of the pentatonic scales. I call the note groups Vyo and Tria, ( 2 and 3 in greek ). Vyo + Tria = Penta Interestingly, I first called them 2 and 3, like you. But then the group numbers cause confusion when using numbers to label the individual strings. Have found only one other channel teaching this grouping.

Ha! I’ve been thinking this way for years only I use different terms: the “6pack” (whole step interval sub- group)and the “Extended Pair” (Whole +half step interval sub-group). I think of them as the sub-grouping found in the five pentatonic boxes. Ricky is the first guy I’ve seen who takes advantage of this perspective!

The scale notes on the E strings (6th and 1st strings) are of the same name. If the pattern extends to an E string consider the other E string as the same string and continue the pattern. Both E strings are in the pattern, increasing the number of strings in the pattern. Hope I've not confused you more on this :)

That video actually incorporated around 10 different lessons for me. Self-study revealed that for a MINOR blues key, the b3 is the target and one fret behind (neck direction) what was shown on the diagrams. The diagrams also showed how to locate the root note in any of the 5 minor pentatonic positions. I had to watch this many times to get a grip on the entirety of the lesson. If you don't get it right off, do some self-study, come back and watch it again. Keep doing that until you "get it".....

This might be a completely dumb question, but I don't see what actual frets we are looking at. If the first position one you drew has the root on the 5th fret, where are all the rest of these? Then the second drawing you did would put the root on the A string 8th fret, which doesn't make sense to me. Sorry, I can't follow. Any help>

IV is referring to the 4th scale degree. 1, 2, & 3 are on the E string, but that drawing doesn't include a highlighted E string. I think that's why it was hard to follow. V is the next scale degree after IV, and it's on the same string as the IV. If you play the IV chord (or V for that matter), the 3rd in that chord is down one string and back one fret. His Triad lesson covers the R-3-5 really well. Sorry i'm not as clear and concise as Ricky. He makes this stuff so much easier to understand than what's in my head! 😂
