As part of my kitchen renovation in the abandoned building, I wanted something to fit with the concrete countertop in my DIY kitchen island, so I built this diagonal side grain butcher block countertop from hard maple. This is a relatively easy woodworking project. I milled up the maple lumber then glued it up using my Rockler woodworking clamps. Then it was a matter of routing a groove in the countertop, so it fit into the concrete portion. I love how the warmth of the wood ties the whole kitchen renovation together.

I've heard that finishing the bottom side of the wood will help prevent warping and cracking from happening over time, especially in a moist environment like the kitchen. Also, gotta love the porject

This! If its not going to be removable, you can finish it with something more permanent like poly, so you don't have to oil it. Just protects the entire block in the long run.
@lichterstern3104
@lichterstern3104 2 жыл бұрын
Wood expands and shrinks with the moisture level so it is importent so treat all the surfice areas the same. A untreated underside could expand more than a treated top because it is not as well protectet and you maby end up with a unwanted warp in your surfice.

Seal the seam between the concrete and the block, or else you're going to get liquids (water and chicken juices for example!) wicking under and dripping below. Will cause a mess and long term issues at the joint.

Butcher block looks amazing! As others have said, seal ALL sides and then seal the edge between the block and the concrete to prevent liquids from flowing down. I would have loved to see an end grain cutting board instead. But that's my personal preference.

I’d have made it level with the concrete, but ideally removable so you could clean the grit that will eventually get in the seam (no matter how you do it-the grit will always find its way in). But hey that’s just me.

Look great! One thing I think I might have added tho is have it overhanging the island a bit on the end. That way when you’re using it you have room to move furether over the butcher block and don’t have your feet hit the island.

I've been watching from the start and am still enjoying and learning on each and every video. The butcher block is a work of art. Speaking of art, what plans do you have for the "waste" that you cut off each of the sides. I really think you should put your creative juices to work (or have one of your many very talented friends) to come up with something. Would be a shame to just toss that expensive and beautiful wood.

The juice grooves in butcher block cutting boards are super useful. Pretty simple to do if you wanted to add them, just use a ball end mill on the CNC and cut around the corner. Cutting briskets, steaks, chicken, etc...keeps it from dripping on the floor. Awesome project and loving the kitchen.

Hey @Modustrial Maker!! Why dont you route some channels on the underside and do a C bracket holding in together on 2 places on the width. Its gonna help you keep the butcher block straight for years to come and not so prone to bending of humidity issues. Kinda like how people do their kitchen tables with epoxy fillings and multiple tree pieces and use C brackets. Good job nonetheless!! lovely

That came out great! Small suggestion: finish the bottom side with wood honey as well. It, and the notched area, were both bare in your install. That will avoid uneven moisture absorption in the future, and the cupping or joint splitting that might go with that. Doing it in the notch as well will help provide a tiny bit of protection from any cooktop spills.

Watch the *Epic Upcycling* channel to see how to easily clamp large pieces together directly on a flat worktable. It only involves a fixed board (either clamped or screwed into place) at each end & them tapping some large shims in to fully tighten the workpieces. Adding something weighted on top prevents bowing & walk away. There's no need to worry about clamps or wood shifting & it's a simple process.

Hey Mike, those jagged offcuts you got from the block you can use them to make some really cool looking Bookends. Either take two pieces and attached them together to get a completely flat/rectangular block or you can just round over or sand the edges of a single piece have them keep that really funky look. Both way I'm sure will turn out awesome.
