New Harmony is in the extreme south-west area of Indiana along the Wabash River. Great town to visit for history buffs and nature lovers.

Wonderful, wonderful way with this video. State of Mind, union with Nature. Germans cleaned their houses with toothbrushes and repaired as they went. That's why so many German settled areas still stand fresh. I see some of that same energy in the cities of Gasconade county. i e ..Hermann, MO. Those towns look like somewhere on the Rhine River and always have---sofar as I remember. Thank you. Onward

A lot of small towns are slowly fading away due to a lack of amenities and economic stagnation. A few seem to be going against this trend. I haven't been to this town, but it looks similar to some others I've seen. Those small towns that have something unique to offer are the ones that are likely to survive. Towns that have a strong sense of place, history, or unique attractions nearby have a chance at surviving and even thriving into the future. This town definitely looks like it would be worth a visit if I'm ever driving through the area. While driving through the Pacific Northwest, I've seen this dynamic at work. Many of the small towns have fallen onto hard times due to contraction and automation in the timber industry. Some towns look like they have seen better days, while others are thriving. For the ones that are in good shape, history and location have a lot to do with it. On the Olympic Peninsula, many towns are supported by tourists who visit Olympic National Park, and they are attractive places for retirees from nearby cities, so they seem to be at least surviving, and some, such as Port Townsend with its wealth of historic buildings, have done well in recent years. Incidentally, there is a town called New Harmony in southwestern Utah. Its origins are different, however. As with most towns around there, it started as a Mormon settlement. The original settlement of Fort Harmony was flooded out a few years after it was founded, and the settlers moved to safer ground where they established New Harmony. In the past, I've seen New Harmony referred to as a semi-ghost town, but its population numbers have rebounded in recent years, so this no longer applies. I'm guessing that recent growth in nearby Cedar City and St. George has spurred growth in nearby towns. When I was last in the area, New Harmony, Utah, seemed mainly to be a residential and agricultural community; there aren't a lot of amenities for visitors, but it is an attractive setting. New Harmony, Indiana, definitely looks like a better place for visitors.

You always leave such insightful comments, Heather. As you mentioned about certain small towns being able to stay in good shape because of history and uniqueness; New Harmony, Indiana will most likely always stay relevant because of its history and tourism attractions. I liked what you had to say about places in Utah and Oregon. I actually have not yet been to Utah or Oregon. I’ve flown to southern Cali a couple of times but other than that, I haven’t had opportunities to go out west. Obviously my goal with this channel is to go everywhere in the U.S. I can’t wait for my chance to get out that way.

Wow, too bad you didn't get out of your car! Or comment more on the historic structures you drove by. I went through New Harmony last month when I was passing by. It's a few miles off of the interstate, and I rarely ever get to Indiana, so I thought I'd catch a glimpse of this historically significant town. It eventually became part of the utopianist Owenite movement of the early 19th century, which was (not surprisingly) destined for failure. The town has to be one of the oldest communities in the Midwestern United States. It was truly a wilderness area when founded by religious separatists in 1814. If you travel through the Midwest, you'll be struck by how clean and well kept it is when compared to other towns of the same size. As mentioned in the video, it's not really close to other bigger cities, yet seems prosperous. I didn't see much of a tourist presence, but I wasn't there on a weekend. Might be a bedroom community for Evansville, but I couldn't say for sure.

I used to do art shows and go swimming at Kramer's Lake in Posey County. A friend of mine was a Chef in one of those old restored buildings that was converted into a restaurant. Next time you are in New Harmony check out the Red Geranium Restaurant. You passed some homes on Arthur street where some of my friends used to live. This may not have been a nostalgic video for some, but for me it was truly nostalgic since I now live in Virginia.

I am surprised you did not show the Roofless Church and labyrinths. New Harmony is a very spiritual place and I encourage visitors to take the time and explore. I grew up near there. Also, Chris, your comments about how far away it is from everything is part of its allure. If you go, visit Vincennes for its beauty and history, just a few miles north of New Harmony.

One thing I will disagree about is that not so far away in Southern Illinois is a beautiful natural area, the Garden of the God's and Shawnee Natural Area.Beautiful vista's, gorges, and forest You are right though, it is a long way from major Indiana populations. Now with I 69 completed in the state it is more or less along my way to Houston from Indy so I will check out the town next time I head to see family there.
